BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD

The snow in the morning is heavy, and as the day wears on, it only gets worse. The walk to the lodge is miserable, and Ebonhide and Azurcrest have the worst of it with long distances and steep hills. Visibility is too poor, and the wind is too strong, to make sledding a safe or appealing prospect. The snow piles thick on the trees and clings to everything, and the lodge's entryway and locker area is caked in mud and snow from students shedding their coats and boots before heading to dinner. Rumors circulate that there's going to be a blizzard tonight, and everyone crosses their fingers for classes being cancelled on Monday. No such luck. By the time dinner rolls around, most students are in a poor mood.

There's one more piece of bad news: The staff have determined that all students must spend the night in the lodge to wait out the storm.

In the middle of the afternoon, a blizzard sets in, stranding all the students in the lodge after dinner. The teachers pull out enough sleeping bags and couches for everyone to get comfy enough to spend the night.

That evening, Philippa Nightingale sees something outside in the snow, looking through the windows at the end of a long hallway. A teacher assures her that it was just a bear, but Pippa is certain the arms and legs were too long…

That night, Cressida Quayle swears she saw someone outside the window—or at least, the shape was humanoid. Theresa Noble hears someone trying to open a locked door into the lodge. Hazel Keating on the third floor hears something walking around on the roof.

» Dinner: The storm begins to rage outside, and after some deliberation, the staff determine it'll be safest for everyone to remain in the lodge overnight. They're expecting a complete whiteout, and it would be unsafe to allow students to move freely about campus. For the sake of this event, assume all characters were at dinner. No exceptions.

» Third Floor: In order to stay entertained, a bunch of students hang around in a sitting area on the third floor. This obscure dead end hall has a few couches and arm chairs, and two window seats. Up here, there's limited adult oversight. There's also a door that opens out onto a balcony. If you want to do anything against the rules, such as drinking (don't get visibly drunk, and remember you're limited to what you had on your person at an average dinner) or smoking (better sneak out onto the very snowy balcony so the teachers don't smell it), this is your place. Remember, you're still within reach of teachers and certain prefects who will report you.

» Third Floor: Truth or Dare: Taking place on the third floor in the little sitting area, a group of ever-changing students play truth or dare out of the sight of teachers.

» Second Floor / Library: Snow and a complete lockdown aren't going to keep dedicated students from hitting the books. The second floor is the quietest tonight, and will be the best place for private conversations.

» First Floor / Atrium: If you're ready to call it a night, or just want to be somewhere quiet to lie down or cuddle, the atrium has been filled with sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is provided with an oversized GOOSEBERRY HIGH shirt in house colors to sleep in.

» Night: You know you're safe, but it doesn't feel safe. Even the bravest students feel unnerved, and sleeping alone doesn't sound very appealing. The best place to be is in the Atrium, surrounded by your peers, with someone you care about right next to you.
  • Reply to this comment with your character, and describe to us what they're worried about. The mods will inform you if they could or couldn't sleep. Students who can will fall asleep before midnight and have a restful evening. Students who can't will find themselves restless all night with their fears on their mind.

Being trapped with so many people and having no escape is pretty much Irene's worst nightmare. She slips off to the library as soon as possible, knowing that her place of refuge might very well be overrun soon, but for now she's taking advantage of its relative quietness. Besides, surely Ms Petrichor won't allow anyone to get rowdy in here, blizzard or not.

Irene grabs a book and settles down at her favourite study table, tucked away in a corner behind some shelves. It's going to be a long night.

Calvin & Cole - Patronus practice!
[info]evercreep
2017-01-08 03:07 pm UTC (link)
Calvin still isn't certain how he could manage a Patronus and Cole couldn't. Cole seemed like the perfect candidate for the spell. Calm, sensitive, thoughtful. Calvin, meanwhile, would snap under the lightest pressure and people only called him sensitive if they were implying he was oversensitive. But he'd realised a lot of things about Cole recently. His insecurities and shortcomings were becoming more obvious, and Calvin had a more complete picture of his roommate now. He had to retire Cole Moss, Paragon of Effortless Success in favour of... Cole Moss, just another boy. Well, maybe not just another boy.

"I suppose we should talk theory before jumping in," he murmurs as he flips through the textbook to the section on the Patronus Charm. "What was your memory?"

Paragon or boy, Cole is grateful for Calvin's willingness to instruct him and he nods along in agreement. Starting with theory is fine with him, though that's never the part he had any difficulty with. "Last time? When I got Leonora." Just mentioning the name of his grumpy, over-protective owl makes him smile a little; he doesn't have to tell Calvin how much he cares about the bird and the memory seems like it should've been adequate for the spell.

That makes Calvin crack a smile as he looks up at Cole over his glasses. Back when he disliked Cole (the idea of Cole, the Cole he'd built in his imagination) he was scared of that owl, afraid that she might turn on Calvin for raising his voice toward her human. She still makes him a little nervous, honestly. "Can you describe the memory to me? How it makes you feel?"

"I'll...try." Articulating how he feels has never been easy for Cole and he goes quiet, thinking through the question and the memory with care before he answers. The pause before he speaks again is awkwardly long. "It was four weeks before I went to Ilvermorny for the first time. I was nervous about going, so dad got Leonora. He showed her to me and told me that she'd take letters home for me when I wanted her to. I didn't really care about that. Because I didn't know what I would write. But she was...majestic and beautiful and strange and she had this wild scent that I'd never smelled before. She came and perched on my arm, which hurt a little but wasn't so bad, and she let me pet her. I felt connected to her; like I was hers as much as she was mine. I don't think I drew anything but her until after I started at school." This seems to be he has to say and he punctuates the point with a small nod, looking at Calvin as if for approval.

Calvin waits patiently through both the explanation and the long pause that preceded it. He leans on his hand as he listens, elbow propped on the table. Cole talks like such an artist. It's the details he focuses on that do it.

Anyway. It was a happy memory, but Calvin remembers that the book advises a memory that isn't simply content, but joyous. The happier the better. Cole's memory might not cut it. However, Calvin's not even half as callous as everyone thinks he is, or at least that's what he has to keep telling himself. He knows better than to make Cole feel as though his love for his bird is insufficient.

"What's the most, I don't know, excited you've ever felt with her? Have you ever been so happy you couldn't contain it? You know," he points the feathered end of his quill at Cole, and lets it barely touch his sternum, "in there."

Cole's eyes follow the tip of the feather until it touches his chest and he hesitates, not seeming to have an easy answer. There's another stretch of silence, then he looks at Calvin again, asking instead, "What was your memory?"

Calvin withdraws the feather and presses it to his mouth as he thinks. This shouldn't be embarrassing, but sometimes saying literally anything about himself is a lesson in humiliation. Especially when it comes to referencing who he was versus who he is now. "I was nervous about coming back to Gooseberry. Not scared, mind you," that's a lie; he was absolutely scared, "but when I got onto the bus and saw Ree again, I was so happy. She's..." This is where it gets embarrassing. Calvin folds in on himself slightly, losing a bit of bluster.

"I think she's the first true friend I've ever really had," he finally admits.

To get his mind off things (and because they have a lot of hours to kill this evening), Ravi retrieves the rapiers from his locker. They're high-quality LARP weapons, painted to look surprisingly realistic, but the blades are still just foam-latex. He finds an open area on the second floor and starts blocking out the choreography for his talent show entry. It's obvious from his intense focus that Ravi spends a lot of time practicing his swordsmanship.

[Open to Chris, Ivy or Tess, if they want to help! Someone in Fencing Club or a sword-user in LARP would also be welcome. c:]

A certain Azurcrest is watching Ravi's demonstration from a distance, lightly biting his knuckle as he maybe kind of stares. Just a little, though. A light staring, if you will.

If Ravi notices, though, he's going to run the fuck away and never acknowledge this.

After spending the first part of the evening being the responsible Head Boy (meeting with Mr. Merrill, helping to get things set up, doing a head count, calming down a few worried freshman, and generally keeping an eye on things), Cecil retreats to the second floor for a few minutes to catch his breath. After briefly browsing the shelves, he emerges with a book that he doesn't immediately open and takes a seat in an empty section of the library by a large window. Beyond, there's nothing visible but darkness and the drifting snow, but that's nothing new for someone that grew up in rural North Dakota. He exhales a small breath. He's heard a lot of people complaining tonight, but he's just grateful that everyone was together when the storm got bad and that, now, they're all safe together in the Lodge.

"I am not surprised," Rafael teases as he walks up to Cecil's table. "Everyone is having an exciting time playing inappropriate—but rule abiding—party games, and you are studying." There's nothing but dry affection in his voice as he takes a seat across from Cecil, who seemed ready to have a nice, relaxing evening reading. Rafael tilts his head as he looks at the book, still unopened. Interpreting the title upside down and in English takes him an additional second or two. It's a cook book. "Or not studying. Are you going to be cooking something tonight?"

Glancing around at the sound of his friend's voice, Cecil looks a little sheepish because he isn't even reading yet and he certainly isn't studying. Nevertheless, he smiles warmly at Rafael as he takes a seat. "I hope you're not too disappointed in me," he teases right back, then touches the cover of the book and shakes his head, "Probably not tonight. But Levi got me some vanilla beans when he was in Mexico. So...I thought I might look for some new recipes that will really make the most of them." His tone as he speaks of the gift makes it clear that he thinks this was very sweet. Then he asks, "What about you, though? Too much Truth or Dare?"

"I can't spend all night being silly, I am only good for one hour of humor," he explains matter-of-factly.

"I am sure whatever you make, it will be impressive," he continues, more interested in Cecil's cooking than recounting some of the ridiculous things going on upstairs. They'd only cause Cecil stress, or embarrass him. Cecil doesn't need to know who Ravi licked or that Chris got a manicure. "I have said it before, but you are very good at it."

This earns a small, bright, genuine laugh from Cecil and, while he shakes his head, he doesn't actually protest. But they both know that dry humor is still humor, Rafael.

At the mention of his cooking, his smile softens into something simultaneously grateful and embarrassed. "You have," he agrees, "But it still means a lot. So...thank you." He's quiet for a moment, then adds more playfully, "Don't worry. I'll make sure to bring something for Coppertale too." Promised playfully or not, he absolutely will.

Rafael makes a face, but not a very severe one. He knows Chris will accidentally ask too much of Cecil given a chance. Neve out of cruelty, just out of being himself, rarely restrained, always too enthusiastic. And then there's Cecil, eager to please, constantly on the hunt for someone to help. It's a combination that needs a little oversight. "Don't say that where Chris can overhear. Before you know it, he will have a whole menu he wants you to prepare. But then again, maybe that would be good practice for your future."

Cecil smiles, about to point out that just because Chris has an entire menu in mind that doesn't mean he'll get everything on it, but what Rafael says next gives him pause. He hesitates for a moment before shrugging his broad shoulders. "Anything's possible," he admits a little reluctantly, "I...still haven't made any decisions."

2017-01-09 07:36 pm UTC (link)
Truth or Dare provides limited entertainment before everyone starts annoying the fuck out of him. This is Sy's second time trapped in the lodge, and it's no more bearable with experience. Trapped with no way out and no way to clear his head, he grabs his favourite Quaffle and ends up prowling the halls in search of a distraction. Usually, this would mean finding some sophomore to rough up, but Sy's been trying to behave... for the next two weeks, anyway.

Luckily, he turns a corner, and sees something better than a nerd asking for a swirly. Sy spins the beaten leather Quaffle in his hands, and yells "Decourt, catch!" just as he chucks it hard at Clem's head.

Here's the thing: Clem has really good reflexes, and getting hit in the head with a quaffle is not something that happens to her a lot (anymore). But she was right in the middle of talking to somebody, and not expecting to have to catch a quaffle, because she's at a Lodge Sleepover and not Quidditch practice, so she's not exactly prepared. And, to her credit, she does manage to deflect it, but she fumbles the catch, and the quaffle goes bouncing down the hallway.

"Aw, come on," she complains loudly, more irritated that she didn't actually manage to catch it than that he threw it at her head in the first place. "Awful throw."

"Sure, if by awful, you mean fuckin' awesome. Don't shit on how badass I am just because Fiori hasn't been giving you enough practice." He watches the ball go, just long enough to make sure it doesn't bounce out of sight, but cheerfully ignores his favourite Quaffle to approach Clem instead. He doesn't recognize the person with her, and he doesn't much care. "Fuck off," he says, and gives them a 'get out of here' hand signal. (In a rare show of manners, it's not the one involving his middle finger.)

"Yeah, if you were trying to hit my head. If you were trying to make a pass it was awful," she insists, although she's mostly convinced herself it was his fault/gotten over it by this point. Her friend, who is a deeply intimidated Ebonhide freshman, looks to her for help when Sy dismisses him, but she just shrugs in response and he hightails it out of there.

It's only once he's gone that Clem continues with a somewhat hypocritical sentiment: "Don't be mean to my friends, jerk."

"Bullshit. You're friends with freshies? I don't even know the names of any freshmen." Sy's grin only widens when he sees Clem doesn't mind him monopolizing her attention. A smart person would never encourage him, but smart people are fuckin' squares who never have fun.

Sy doesn't appear even slightly sorry about the Quaffle. "I had faith in you, girl. I knew you wouldn't let it hit you."

"He's going to try out for the team next year," Clem says. "I'm talent scouting. For when I'm captain." The actual likelihood of this might be debatable, but she figures if Sy made captain she's gotta be at least in the running, and having a remote chance is as good as it being done already in her head. That being said, she wasn't terribly sorry to see him go.

"You're lucky I didn't catch it or it would've gone right back in your face," she says. "But you wouldn't let it hit you either, right?" It's hard to tell if she's trying to flirt, issuing a challenge, or making a vague threat, but it's definitely one of those three things.

But then, he takes most of the things Clem says as flirting, even when she's just flat-out telling him he's a dumbass.
