BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD

The snow in the morning is heavy, and as the day wears on, it only gets worse. The walk to the lodge is miserable, and Ebonhide and Azurcrest have the worst of it with long distances and steep hills. Visibility is too poor, and the wind is too strong, to make sledding a safe or appealing prospect. The snow piles thick on the trees and clings to everything, and the lodge's entryway and locker area is caked in mud and snow from students shedding their coats and boots before heading to dinner. Rumors circulate that there's going to be a blizzard tonight, and everyone crosses their fingers for classes being cancelled on Monday. No such luck. By the time dinner rolls around, most students are in a poor mood.

There's one more piece of bad news: The staff have determined that all students must spend the night in the lodge to wait out the storm.

In the middle of the afternoon, a blizzard sets in, stranding all the students in the lodge after dinner. The teachers pull out enough sleeping bags and couches for everyone to get comfy enough to spend the night.

That evening, Philippa Nightingale sees something outside in the snow, looking through the windows at the end of a long hallway. A teacher assures her that it was just a bear, but Pippa is certain the arms and legs were too long…

That night, Cressida Quayle swears she saw someone outside the window—or at least, the shape was humanoid. Theresa Noble hears someone trying to open a locked door into the lodge. Hazel Keating on the third floor hears something walking around on the roof.

» Dinner: The storm begins to rage outside, and after some deliberation, the staff determine it'll be safest for everyone to remain in the lodge overnight. They're expecting a complete whiteout, and it would be unsafe to allow students to move freely about campus. For the sake of this event, assume all characters were at dinner. No exceptions.

» Third Floor: In order to stay entertained, a bunch of students hang around in a sitting area on the third floor. This obscure dead end hall has a few couches and arm chairs, and two window seats. Up here, there's limited adult oversight. There's also a door that opens out onto a balcony. If you want to do anything against the rules, such as drinking (don't get visibly drunk, and remember you're limited to what you had on your person at an average dinner) or smoking (better sneak out onto the very snowy balcony so the teachers don't smell it), this is your place. Remember, you're still within reach of teachers and certain prefects who will report you.

» Third Floor: Truth or Dare: Taking place on the third floor in the little sitting area, a group of ever-changing students play truth or dare out of the sight of teachers.

» Second Floor / Library: Snow and a complete lockdown aren't going to keep dedicated students from hitting the books. The second floor is the quietest tonight, and will be the best place for private conversations.

» First Floor / Atrium: If you're ready to call it a night, or just want to be somewhere quiet to lie down or cuddle, the atrium has been filled with sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is provided with an oversized GOOSEBERRY HIGH shirt in house colors to sleep in.

» Night: You know you're safe, but it doesn't feel safe. Even the bravest students feel unnerved, and sleeping alone doesn't sound very appealing. The best place to be is in the Atrium, surrounded by your peers, with someone you care about right next to you.
  • Reply to this comment with your character, and describe to us what they're worried about. The mods will inform you if they could or couldn't sleep. Students who can will fall asleep before midnight and have a restful evening. Students who can't will find themselves restless all night with their fears on their mind.

Quinn & Ty

During that long silence, Ty maintains a mostly light expression but his heel continues to bounce restlessly in earnest. He finally loses hold on his smile when Quinn begins to answer, but he can't blame her for being surprised and uncertain and reluctant. Which she definitely is. "Yeah. I'd be okay with that. Like I said, I'm there for Rafael, not Ricardo," he answers immediately and gives another small shake of his head, "Ric and I aren't friends. We were never friends. I only got an invitation because Rafael needs his friends there so he doesn't get into it with his brother on his special day. And if Ric's got anything to say about you or me or any of us...fuck him."

Then he pauses, touching the back of his neck. He doesn't want to say that there haven't been any other friends for a while. He doesn't want to say that there's nobody else he'd even want to take to Mexico. He doesn't want to say that no other girl could make his heart skip a beat just by saying and you like Quinn just had. Instead, he says, "...I don't know. You and I get along, don't we? We always have fun? I like being with you more than...almost anyone, I guess. And I know you can dance. Very important for a wedding." This last is punctuated with a playful, charismatic smile that looks far more confident than it feels.

Quinn tries to hide her face by looking down at her feet as Ty besmirches Ricardo's good name because she's pretty sure that laughter here would be considered 'inappropriate.' (And there are definitely no snorts in that laughter, no siree.) (That was a lie, she totally snorts.) Fuck Ricardo indeed. "Yes, we do. And yes. And that's sad." No, actually, it's pretty sweet but she isn't about to admit it. "And I can. I'm even learning to swing dance, have you heard?"

With a sigh, she buys time to gather her thoughts by crossing her legs and stretching back for a few seconds. She knows she should at least check with Rafael to make sure it wouldn't be weird, even though they've been in a pretty good place for a while. Her expression is less bleak when she looks back at Ty, and she returns his smile with a crooked one of her own. "You argue a pretty convincing case. Can I let you know in a few days?"

Ty laughs softly, glad to hear Quinn make a joke even at his expense, and leans back into the sofa. "I'm at least in your Top 20, right? Top 30? I could live with Top 30. And I had heard that, yeah. I bet you're a natural. Who only steps on her partner's feet when he totally deserves it." He lapses into silence again at that sigh, though, and waits with his green eyes flicking down and away and back again when she finally answers. And it's a maybe. But at least a maybe isn't a no. He returns her smile, "Of course. Yeah. This isn't for a while anyway. I just wanted to ask before you had other plans with Jesse or something."

Then, playfully, he adds, "Will it help if I say 'fuck Ricardo' again?" Because, yes, he did notice that quiet, amused snort.

Quinn's laughter is way less restrained this time and she nods. "Probably. Contrary to popular belief, career goals and hockey are actually only ninety percent of what motivates me to do anything. The other ten is fuelled by 'fuck Ricardo Ramirez.' And as for Spring Break, no, no plans with McBride."

She looks away, biting her lip and trying very hard not to launch into a bitch session about her so-called best friend — Ty doesn't need to hear about that again, or probably ever. Her eyes land on the Truth or Dare circle and suddenly engaging in silly party games seems like a really, really good idea for this week's quarantine. "Then I'll let you know in a bit. But for now," she gestures her head toward the circle, "how would you feel about making some questionable decisions?"

This earns another laugh out of Ty too, but he watches Quinn as she looks away and realizes that he's touched on...something. He hesitates, on the verge of asking if she's all right when she indicates the Truth or Dare game instead. He can take a hint. "All of my decisions are questionable," he points out brightly, rising to his feet and offering the girl a hand to pull her up and off the couch, "But I'm down to make a few more."

Heck no, distractions are almost always preferable to actually talking about shit. "Hey Hawkeswood, some of your friends might take offense to that." Quinn replies, taking his hand gladly and dusting herself off with her other when she's upright. "At least a few of us were outstanding decisions, thank-you-very-much."

Ty, who hadn't considered that interpretation of his comment, begins laughing immediately. He holds up his hands defensively and corrects himself with all the seriousness he can muster, "Almost all of my decisions! I dare you to forgive me?" They're not playing yet, but it's worth a try.

"We're playing by league rules," Quinn reminds Ty as though there's been an official Truth or Dare league this entire time. She ducks behind him to pick up her backpack and, from behind, puts her hands on the back of his shoulders to push guide him toward the game. "Section six, subsection 'B', line sixteen: 'No dares outside the circle.'"
