BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD

The snow in the morning is heavy, and as the day wears on, it only gets worse. The walk to the lodge is miserable, and Ebonhide and Azurcrest have the worst of it with long distances and steep hills. Visibility is too poor, and the wind is too strong, to make sledding a safe or appealing prospect. The snow piles thick on the trees and clings to everything, and the lodge's entryway and locker area is caked in mud and snow from students shedding their coats and boots before heading to dinner. Rumors circulate that there's going to be a blizzard tonight, and everyone crosses their fingers for classes being cancelled on Monday. No such luck. By the time dinner rolls around, most students are in a poor mood.

There's one more piece of bad news: The staff have determined that all students must spend the night in the lodge to wait out the storm.

In the middle of the afternoon, a blizzard sets in, stranding all the students in the lodge after dinner. The teachers pull out enough sleeping bags and couches for everyone to get comfy enough to spend the night.

That evening, Philippa Nightingale sees something outside in the snow, looking through the windows at the end of a long hallway. A teacher assures her that it was just a bear, but Pippa is certain the arms and legs were too long…

That night, Cressida Quayle swears she saw someone outside the window—or at least, the shape was humanoid. Theresa Noble hears someone trying to open a locked door into the lodge. Hazel Keating on the third floor hears something walking around on the roof.

» Dinner: The storm begins to rage outside, and after some deliberation, the staff determine it'll be safest for everyone to remain in the lodge overnight. They're expecting a complete whiteout, and it would be unsafe to allow students to move freely about campus. For the sake of this event, assume all characters were at dinner. No exceptions.

» Third Floor: In order to stay entertained, a bunch of students hang around in a sitting area on the third floor. This obscure dead end hall has a few couches and arm chairs, and two window seats. Up here, there's limited adult oversight. There's also a door that opens out onto a balcony. If you want to do anything against the rules, such as drinking (don't get visibly drunk, and remember you're limited to what you had on your person at an average dinner) or smoking (better sneak out onto the very snowy balcony so the teachers don't smell it), this is your place. Remember, you're still within reach of teachers and certain prefects who will report you.

» Third Floor: Truth or Dare: Taking place on the third floor in the little sitting area, a group of ever-changing students play truth or dare out of the sight of teachers.

» Second Floor / Library: Snow and a complete lockdown aren't going to keep dedicated students from hitting the books. The second floor is the quietest tonight, and will be the best place for private conversations.

» First Floor / Atrium: If you're ready to call it a night, or just want to be somewhere quiet to lie down or cuddle, the atrium has been filled with sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is provided with an oversized GOOSEBERRY HIGH shirt in house colors to sleep in.

» Night: You know you're safe, but it doesn't feel safe. Even the bravest students feel unnerved, and sleeping alone doesn't sound very appealing. The best place to be is in the Atrium, surrounded by your peers, with someone you care about right next to you.
  • Reply to this comment with your character, and describe to us what they're worried about. The mods will inform you if they could or couldn't sleep. Students who can will fall asleep before midnight and have a restful evening. Students who can't will find themselves restless all night with their fears on their mind.

Tess spends enough time tossing and turning, trying to sleep, that finally she just gives up. She finds a comfy chair against a wall in the lodge, away from the snoring freshmen, and tries to get some Hermeticism reading done. She's focusing hard, and when the doorknob beside her rattles, she nearly screams.

She gets up and walks towards the door. If someone is trapped out there, she should open it, right? She puts a hand on the knob.

But then, everyone is inside. They had counted. Thoroughly. She gets a bad feeling, creeping up her spine, and slowly takes her hand of of the knob.

(After this.)

Levi's uncertain if Cecil is asleep or not, but that doesn't stop him from reaching out to lightly brush his fingertips over his boyfriend's cheek. "I love you," he whispers to him, partly to reassure the both of them through this gloom, partly to test if he's still awake. Whether he gets a restful sleep or not, he still has A Theory he wants to share.

Troubled and unable to fall asleep just yet, Cecil's eyes open to look back at Levi, though it takes him a moment to disengage from his thoughts enough to respond. Then he reaches for the other boy's hand. "I love you too," he whispers, not wanting to disturb anyone around that might actually have dozed off, and presses a gentle kiss against Levi's palm. "...Can't sleep?"

Shaking his head in response, Levi shifts closer to Cecil and wraps an arm around him and the bulk of his sleeping bag. He bunts his nose against Cecil's temple, nuzzling affectionately before whispering his horrifying realization: "This is like that one night on the OE trip where it rained and then Wes was taken." Levi was never one to beat around the bush but... Maybe he should have at least softened it?

Being closer to Levi brings Cecil a small sense of comfort and he leans into the other boy gratefully, but the feeling doesn't last long against Levi's revelation. Because he's right. It does feel like that. An oppressive, pervasive feeling that seems to have come out of nowhere. And if Levi feels that too...that does seem to mean something. "Do you think something will happen? We're not alone in the woods, the teachers are here, the doors are locked. There could even be wards. Everyone should be safe." This all sounds very reasonable...but isn't actually that reassuring. Not to Cecil, at least.

Levi doesn't buy into those reassurances, but he lets out a soft, breathy chuckle for Cecil's sake. "You're right," he agrees easily, cheek dimpling in a smile that's just a touch too tight. "Whatever tried to get in couldn't get in." Maybe it wasn't a comforting thought that people heard and saw things outside, but... they tried and failed to enter, right? So they were fine, right? "And it's not like we're separated into twos in tents. There are too many people here. And... some of the teachers have fought Dark Wizards before. I'm sure they can handle whatever's in the woods."

That still wasn't going to stop Levi from staying up and staring at Cecil all night, lest he disappears while they're sleeping.

For a moment, Cecil doesn't answer and he just looks back at Levi. He wonders if the other boy's smile or reassurances or ease are any more genuine than his own. Though, he can't actually manage the smile. He shakes his head, "Maybe we should..." What? Tell the teachers about unconfirmed rumors of figures out in the storm or unusual sounds that they've already heard about from other students and don't seem to be worried about? Wake up all the prefects to patrol a dark and empty Lodge? Try to do a reading that will almost certainly tell them nothing? Seemingly at a loss and more uncertain now than he had been before despite their exchange, he sighs quietly and looks at Levi helplessly.

Levi didn't mean to upset him. He runs his fingers through Cecil's hair in an attempt to soothe. "I don't think anything's going to happen, Cecil," he quietly tries to reassure him. It's not a complete lie, but there's an anxious little thought gnawing at him that keeps whispering, 'What if?' "The lodge is the most secure place in Gooseberry. And they've never hurt us, right? I think they're just curious about us. We'll be fine." Levi boops him on the nose, trying to lighten the mood. "Besides, I'm an Auror."

Despite himself, this last bit (and the boop, of course) earns a small smile from Cecil and he teases gently, "I thought you were a Coppertale?" Then he sighs and spends a few more moments silently considering and fretting and reasoning. Finally, he nods. He doesn't know yet if he trusts the entities in the forest, but he trusts the judgement of their teachers and he trusts that the Lodge is safe. He moves to put a hand against Levi's cheek. "You're right. Everything's fine. Are you...all right?" He's the one that started this conversation after all; he must've been troubled too.

"I'm a Coppertale and an Auror. Doubly brave. I'm fine." He didn't feel brave right now, but he could at least convey a sense of light-heartednesss in his tone. Levi cups his hand over Cecil's as it rests against his cheek. "I'll protect my little fish, don't you worry."

"Everything's fine," Cecil repeats softly, "You don't need to protect me." Honestly, he isn't afraid for himself anyway. Not really. It's the dozens of other students, all of which he feels at least somewhat responsible for, that have set that worried expression into his features. And his friends. And Diego. And Levi. But everything's fine. He presses a brief, firm kiss to Levi's lips, then asks, "...should we try to get some sleep? Class tomorrow."

Levi lifts a finger to rub at the knit in Cecil's brow, as if to point out the fact that Cecil was still stressing. "Worrywart," he teases with a quiet, breathy laugh, shifting in his sleeping bag to return the affection with a gentle kiss between his brows where worry creased. He settles back down, intruding on Cecil's sleeping space and the edge of his boyfriend's pillow as he rests his head. "Sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don't drift apart."

Unable to argue with this, because he is a worrywart, Cecil smiles a little at Levi's touch and kiss and continued attempts to reassure him. He really is sweet. More than willing to share his pillow and his space, he hooks an arm around Levi as he moves closer and asks, "...Really?" Another small smile. How can he not smile at the thought of otters holding hands?

Diego & OPEN

Diego can't sleep, but he's not a prefect, and he's not seeing anyone, so his options for distractions are limited. He crawls out of his sleeping bag, which he'd set up next to no one in particular, and finds a chair at the edge of the atrium. At first, he means to go somewhere private, but... something stops him. The long empty halls are intimidating tonight. So with all of his sleeping (or tossing and turning) classmates less than ten feet away, he opens up the notebook Mina gave him. It's already messy with scribbled notes and compositions, most of them incomplete with mismatched lyrics he doesn't like. There's not a lot he can do, since he has to be quiet, but he does his best, humming out notes under his breath as he imagines a song that'd fit the weather and his mood.

Sometimes he looks out the window and searches for the shadowy outlines of the mountains and forests. He kind of wishes he were out there right now, deep in the woods, but figures that's on account of cabin fever and his rollercoaster moods. Up and down, up and down. God, he's tired. Just in general.

Diego & Casper
[info]casperkim
2017-01-11 05:40 pm UTC (link)
A small sphere of pale, wand-generated light approaching from up the dark hall announces Casper's approach long before anything else, even the quiet sound of his footsteps. He's been watching one one of the exterior doors for the last hour and is supposed to meet with the other restless prefects soon to discuss what they saw or heard or sensed; in his case, that's a lot of nothing. Tense and irritated and exhausted despite his inability to sleep, he's prepared to glower at the shape he spies in the chair...but softens a little when he realizes it's Diego, hard at work on his songs at two in the fucking morning. He shakes his head as he approaches, causing his small ponytail (his hair had been a tangled mess from tossing and turning and this had seemed like the simplest solution) to bob back and forth, and murmurs quietly, "Is this dedication or insomnia?"

Diego & Casper

Diego looks up, surprised. It's not often that Casper speaks to him outside of practice. Communication between them is rough, and Diego honestly can't tell if Casper hates him or not. He hasn't quit the band and left them high and dry, though. That counts for a lot. Diego knows that the band is mostly comprised of people doing him a favor.

"Both, I guess." He almost smiles, but then decides he's not into it. He runs a hand back through his hair and exhales. "More the latter. I can't sleep here."
