Who: Rielle and Aaron
What: An actual ride on the subway. Burglary free
When: Tonight (But you know, in the fuuuutuuuurreeee)
Where: The closest stop to Shear Madness

Cynthia had let Aaron go a little early in order to run "an errand". That was how he'd explained his sudden need to leave and get Rielle on a subway once and for all. The truthful answer would have raised too many questions, and once the other hairdressers got into it, he'd never hear the end of it. Never mind that he wasn't actually interested in Rielle. Seriously, the girl had to ask if wearing heels on the subway was a good idea. If you were a seasoned pro, sure. If you worked on Wall Street, or were going to see a play, yeah, good idea. But even then you probably weren't going to run around in those crazy monster heels fashionista types always had on. It was ridiculous really. It was almost as if they were asking to be pushed over and have their purse snatched. Duh. Common sense, ladies.

He was waiting just outside the shop. Out of view of any windows, so that his "errand" wouldn't become fodder for salon gossip after all, but where Rielle would see him when she got out of her "cab". As if. The girl had a driver and she was probably going to use it. Whatever, she'd agreed to try the subway again, which was actually pretty impressive. The fact that she'd even consented to go again was pretty brave, considering. He leaned against the cold brick wall and zipped up his jacket, wishing she'd hurry up. Brave or not, he'd rather be inside.

"What is there to follow?" She asked, looking confused. He asked her for a reason. That was a reason. Apparently it wasn't good enough for him? Or it wasn't what he wanted to hear.

"What do you want me to say? Tell me what you think my reason should be, because it's probably the same reason you're sitting next to me and not still at your mom's salon."

Aaron blinked at her. Not out of disbelief, but just because he was still processing all her other flimsy answers, "You mean, what is my reason?" He didn't bother waiting for her to answer, he had a quick answer.

"I wanted to prove you wrong." Easy. Duh. He didn't even have to think about it.

Prove her wrong. Right. She snorted at that. She couldn't help it. He said it so quick, it just seemed... rehearsed. Maybe. Or defensive.

"You really proved me wrong. Your life is complete now, right? Man. You proved me wrong so hard, by taking me down here and sitting next to me and holding my hand even. Wow. I'm so wrong, and you provided all the proof. Thank you." She rolled her eyes and looked out the window again.

Ugh. She was being annoying again. Just all... Quippy and snide. Blech. It was not appreciated. At all. He rolled his eyes.

"You came down here alone to prove me wrong, right? And then you got punched in the face." He hesitated, because frankly her attitude didn't make him feel much like sharing, but if he didn't she'd just go on being... Ugh. "I might have felt a little responsible, so yes. I came down here with you to prove you wrong proving me wrong."

"And you had to hold my dirty, grimy hand in the process." He needed a cigarette.

Wow. He'd just done a complete 180. She was actually kind of taken aback by it. What had she said that made him suddenly so annoyed? She was kidding before. It was a joke.

"I never said your hand was dirty or grimy. If anything, mine was the sweaty one." Her voice was low, because regardless of the fact that she was on a subway car, and it was all but empty, she still didn't want to start a scene. And also, she felt a little bad. "You weren't responsible for me getting punched, you know. Like, at all." Even if she was trying to prove him wrong.

Her idea of what a joke was was not much like what his idea of a joke was. With her, he was really never sure when she was serious and when she was 'joking'. It was, well, annoying. Infuriating even.

But, he would make an attempt to calm down. "No. I guess not." He grumbled, lacing his hands together in his lap and slumping forward, "I am, kinda. By proxy. I didn't personally punch you in the face, but you went down there alone because of something I said. So, I'm sort of responsible."

"You think I put myself in danger just because of something you said?" Okay, so she totally did. And it probably was completely partly his fault. But she was grateful for him being there now, and grateful for him covering up her bruise and she just couldn't sit there and let him blame himself. Even if it wasn't tearing him up inside, it was still bothering him or he wouldn't have cared.

"Trust me, you are not that far under my skin. I did it to prove it to myself. And maybe to piss my parents off or something. I don't know." Her lie detection was going off on herself, but she ignored it. "But it had nothing to do with you, okay? So you can stop blaming yourself or whatever."

Aaron may not have lie detection, but he could tell she wasn't being truthful, or maybe he just liked to think it because he was pretty positive the idea would never have even crossed her mind if he had never brought it up in the first place.

And he was so under her skin. He could tell. It was so obvious. After all, she'd gone out and asked around about whether or not it was strange that she'd lived in NYC all her life and never ridden the subway. She wouldn't have had to ask if it wasn't bothering her. But he wasn't taking much pleasure in it for the moment. Mostly because he hadn't intended to get under her skin. So why should he care if it had happened, right?

He sucked in a sharp breath, "Maybe." That was an I-don't-really-believe-you-maybe. "But it would never have even crossed your mind if I hadn't ragged on you about it, and you know at least that's true."

She rolled her eyes. It didn't seem like Aaron believed her. Had he read her mind? Or maybe her power wasn't all in her head. Maybe he could hear it whirring from his spot next to her, even over the loud banging and clicking of the car on the tracks. It was her turn to get annoyed now. She was going to have to tell the truth, wasn't she? If anything, just to make the whirring stop. But she wasn't looking forward to what she only assumed would be a smug look from her companion.

"Fine. You're right. I came down to prove you wrong, and in the process, I got punched in the face and robbed. And I'm not sure why I care what you think, or what you say, because no one else certainly does. But for some reason, I do. I can't believe I let you get under my skin but you're like, I don't know. So far under there that antibiotics wouldn't be able to force you out. And I'm sitting here next to you and not my cousin because I apparently seek your approval more than his. He couldn't give a damn if I ride the subway. But you do, so here I am." She huffed, embarrassed but also feeling a little liberated. "Happy?"

Had she just... Called him a disease? She had. She really had. Way to make him feel like a disgusting tick or something. Wonderful.

Obviously there was more there, but it was a lot to take in. What kind of question was 'Happy'?

"I guess... It answers my question, I suppose." He began slowly, but then wasn't sure where to go from there. Aaron trained his eyes on his sneakers, and sort of jiggled his foot for a moment. He then raised his head up and gave her an odd smile--not a smug one, but sort of a smirk--and said, "You know, you kinda just called me a disease." It was easier to just make a joke. It felt better than getting all serious right along with her. Really, what was he supposed to say. It wasn't as if that had been an admission of like or anything, just an admission that his opinion was valuable.

Really. That. That was what he was focusing on? All of her nerves and embarrassment went flying right out the window as she let out a laugh. He wasn't focusing on her saying that she cared what he thought. Or any of it. Nope. He thought she called him a disease. Which, if she thought about it, she supposed to sort of did. But she hadn't really.

"That's what you focus on? My metaphor?" She buried her face in her hands for a second, then looked over at him. She was still smiling from her laughter. "Should I specify what disease? Or do you want me to keep it vague. Keep you guessing?"

"Nah, it's okay, keep me guessing." He sighed dramatically. He had heard her alright. It was just some kind of defense mechanism, making that joke. And anyway, she'd sort of made it a habit about making him feel dirty, so of course that was the thing he was going to latch onto. It wasn't completely his fault that he'd paid attention to that metaphor.

"It was a joke." Aaron insisted, sitting back in the seat again, "I heard you. You obviously recognize that whole business was my fault. So let me feel responsible, okay? I'm sorry I got under your skin and got your purse stolen. Now you've ridden the subway, and your life is complete. I proved you wrong, from now on I can leave you alone."

She mimicked his sigh. Was he playing a martyr now? Good grief did it ever end with his dramatics? She could definitely tell he was into theater, that was for sure.

"Just because I did it to prove you wrong doesn't mean it was your fault or that I blame you. So relax about feeling responsible, okay? It's over anyways. My eye is back to its normal gorgeous self, in part thanks to you." She nodded her head in thanks. "And now I've been proven wrong. The subway is not dirty-- well, as dirty as I'd imagined. Nor is it full of bums." She shot him a grin then turned away from him. During the next part, she didn't want him to see her face.

"But that doesn't mean you have to leave me alone."

And surprisingly, it was only a recent development. Well, at least the part where he actually was about to partake in theater. He'd seen plenty of shows growing up, but being in one was new. He certainly had the flair for the dramatic, however. It was a wonder he hadn't gotten into it sooner.

After she'd finished her speech, the only thing he could think of to say was, "Oh." Especially after she threw in that last bit. How was he supposed to take that?

"Um. Okay." He added, feeling that 'oh' was a less than satisfactory response, not that 'um' or 'okay' were much better, but it was quantity he was going for, not quality. "Um. I think the next stop is ours."

This was awkward now. She should have just let him decide not to talk to her anymore and be done with it. But she didn't want to. She actually did like talking to him. And arguing was fun with him. He could understand that it wasn't always mean or rude or hurtful. It was just... for something to do. Sure, he got offended at stupid shit, and seemed to have some kind of preoccupation with accusing her of calling him dirty constantly, but she could work with that. Or maybe he'd get over it eventually and realize not everything she said to him was meant as an insult. Either way.

But. His 'Oh's and his 'Um' and his 'Okay's didn't really sound too convincing that he actually wanted to continue a (dare she say) friendship. So, she probably should have just dropped it. Saved herself the embarrassment. And humiliation. Ariel would never let her hear the end of it.

At his comment about the next stop being theirs, she quietly sighed in relief. Now, it was her turn to be shorthanded with her words. "Oh, okay." She jumped to her feet, grabbing onto a pole, thankful to have a reason to get off the car and away from their conversation. At least her fears of the subway were gone. She had other things on her mind now.

It wasn't that he didn't want to continue a friendship (if that's what they were calling it) but it was not really the first thing he'd expected to ever hear from her. Actually, it was probably the last. Judging by her short answer, he hadn't given a very good response, but what was he supposed to say?

Aaron stood up and straightened his jacket sleeves. "I mean..." What did he mean? He couldn't really backtrack and make the whole thing better. "You're like... Doing the play and stuff so... We'll see each other and stuff anyway. You weren't going to be rid of me that easily." He sort of gave a half laugh, but there wasn't really anything he'd said that had been funny.

Okay. Now she needed to pretend like it didn't bother her. He was backtracking. God, did he feel bad for her or something? She wanted to frown, but her instinct was to smile. It was just like when her parents came home from a trip and then told her they were leaving the next day. She needed to cover her humiliation and, uh, disappointment. Or whatever.

"Yeah, no. I know. I totally get it." She nodded, and followed his half laugh with a half laugh of her own. "I'm doing sets, so like yeah. I'll route you on and stuff." She shrugged.

Fail.

Major fail. She didn't 'totally get it' at all. But whatever, too late now. Damage had been done and he couldn't just put a bandaid on it with backtracking and fake laughter.

Aaron ruffled his hair as the subway pulled into the station. "Uh... Thanks." He sighed and waited for the doors to open, "So... You're doing sets. Do you paint and stuff?"

She stared at the doors, willing them to open so she'd have something to do other than stand there embarrassed. God, this was so awkward now. She had to go and mess it up. Or rather, he had to go and make some comment about leaving each other alone. Why was everything always so black and white with him? She didn't get it. She probably never would.

"Sometimes. I do a lot of sewing, actually. But I don't really want to do costumes." She shrugged. "I draw out my patterns beforehand, though. So I figure it can't be much different than painting." Really, she just wanted to do something with the play. She loved plays. She just didn't want to act in this one. And especially not now.

The doors opened. Quickly, Rielle stepped over the threshold and onto the station's cement ground. For one brief second, she felt relief. She was no longer trapped on that car of awkwardness. But then she heard Aaron step off behind her and her relief went away. She turned and smiled. "Is this the first play you've acted in?"

Maybe he should have just stayed on the car and rode around until he reached the end of the line or something. Gotten off on the next stop and let her figure out her way back herself.

But no, that would have been mean and he wasn't feeling spiteful, just uncomfortable. So he hopped off the car right behind her as promised so they could take the next train back to the salon.

"Oh. Well." He didn't expect that she knew how to sew. Presley and Elliot, yes. But they seemed the type. It didn't seem like a necessary skill for a girl with designer jeans, but here they were. "No it's probably similar." He knew it wasn't. He took art classes. But having artistic skill in one arena usually lead to artistic skill in another, so while they were dissimilar activities, she might excel in both of them.

"It is, actually." He replied simply. He didn't want to seem defensive about it, or nervous. No need to egg her on if things were awkward now.

Everyone had hobbies. And one of Rielle's hobbies just happened to be sewing. It wasn't really that outrageous for a girl who loved fashion as much as Rielle did. She didn't go around showing off the stuff she made, or even wearing it. But she still sewed.

"We'll see, I guess." She shrugged, and glanced around the station. There were more people in this one. She crossed her arms over her chest defensively.

"What part did you get?"

What Rielle didn't know was that a bigger crowd was probably safer. It left more room for pickpockets, yeah, but people didn't usually mug people in the middle of a big crowd. Too many witnesses. Really she had nothing to worry about. And they'd all clear out pretty quickly anyway as more trains came through.

"I'm sure it'll be fun." He wasn't sure, actually, but it seemed like a nice sentiment. Whatever.

"Uh... Neville Landless... And the actor playing him? I think that's how this works." It was a confusing show. Basically a play within a play. Everyone was actually playing two characters: the character from the Dickens story and the actor portraying them.

"Cool." She wasn't exactly sure how the play worked. She'd never read Drood. Charles Dickens wasn't one of her favorite writers. She tended to find his stuff very dry, even if everyone else found it genius and hilarious. But she wasn't going to say that, because she could just see Aaron's face if she did. "Who else is going to be in it? Do you know?"

The only one of her friends who was participating was Sarah. And Ri was positive that she was just taking pictures and doing sets.

There wasn't even a whole novel to read. That was why the play had a choose your own ending. No one actually knew how Dickens wanted the story to end because he'd kicked the bucket about half way through writing the story. It was unfortunate, really, though it made for an interesting way to end a musical.

"Uh... Annie and Jack, I think. And Eden." A few other people he didn't know very well, though he was sure she did.

Ah. She nodded. None of those people were Rielle's biggest fans. She wasn't exactly sure why. She didn't have any issue with Corporate Lobotomy, and actually enjoyed their music for the most part. And Annie? Well, she was just a sophomore. It was a surprise Rielle even knew her. But pretty much anyone associated with the band was well known at the school, so maybe it wasn't such a surprise after all.

"Is Wes going to be in it?" She figured he would have mentioned that right off the bat, considering they were best friends and all. But she needed something to fill the silence, and she was positive once this conversation dropped, they wouldn't have anywhere to pick back up.
