Who: Josie and Alan
What: A run in
Where: The supermarket
When: Saturday, April 30th, late afternoon
Rating: PG/PG-13
Status: In-Progress

Josie was a woman on a mission, she had decided after being home for a few hours she was bored and wanted a bowl of ice cream. Not just any ordinary bowl of ice cream, she wanted one of her super duper, horribly bad for her, full of calories, gut bursting ice cream sundae. Sure Twisty's had sundaes, but none of could compare to her SDHBFHFOCGB sundae of her own design. Only bad thing...they didn't have the majority of the ingredients. So she made her way to the supermarket and had gathered all the essentials, ice cream (obviously), three different kinds actually, whip cream, sprinkles, and a jar of maraschino cherries. The only thing left was the chocolate syrup.

She quickly found the aisle, but where was it. There was no way she could make her SDHBFHFOCGB sundae without the chocolate syrup. She saw butterscotch, strawberry, caramel, but no chocolate. What they hell...chocolate was the most basic. Then she had a horrible thought and looked up and there it was. Her beloved chocolate syrup was on the highest shelf. This was the row with the ridiculously high shelf that no real human could reach. Sure Josie was pretty tall for a girl but even she couldn't reach it. She did the basic reaching and jumping and that didn't even work. It was at times like this she wished her freak ability involved stretching or the ability to grow or something. She looked around to find a solution, she wasn't going to leave without it. She couldn't stand on a lower shelf, that would be the last thing she needed, slipping off and falling into the aisle across the way breaking the jars of marshmallow fluff. Sure she could run away and they wouldn't catch her, but first she's leave all her beloved things that she wanted there and second she'd leave them a trail of marshmallow fluff all the way home. Then a brilliant idea came to her. She emptied out the hand basket she hand filled and turned it upside down. She then stood on it and...she still couldn't reach. Come on! She was even wearing high heeled boots. See! No real person could reach it. It wasn't fair, she was so close but her fingertips were just barely missing the bottle.

Alan was stacking soup cans in the adjacent aisle. He had been at this all day, somehow always managing to do it wrong or not the way his supervisor intended for him to do it. The first thing she had told him was to organize the soup cans, so he asked her what he had to use in order to organize them. She told him to use whatever he wanted. So, Alan lined up the soup cans all along the floor according to their barcode number. Apparently, that wasn't how she wanted him to organize them. She wanted them stacked up. Alan collected all the soup cans and stacked them up in the middle of the aisle, blocking the passage from one side of the aisle to the other. That wasn't how she wanted them either.

Finally, she showed him how she wanted them stacked, neatly in rows on the shelves so that the brand name of the soup was facing him. Alan was then able to follow her instruction. Once finished, he strolled over to the adjacent aisle, head tilting as he spotted Josie standing on a basket and trying to reach something really high up. It didn't occur to him to offer his help. It didn't occur to him that she was frustrated or upset in any way. He was just interested in what it was she was up to.

"What are you doing?"

Using the shelf in which her beloved chocolate syrup was on she tried to pull herself up a little higher and now her fingertips were brushing against the smooth surface of the bottle. 'Just a little higher and...' her thoughts were cut short when a voice broke through. She jumped a little and almost slipped off the basket she was standing on. Luckily she had quick reflexes and recovered quickly, steadying her footing on the basket.

Josie's eyes fell on the person who interrupted her. The first thing she took it was his uniform. She breathed a sigh of relief. "Perfect, you work here. Do you think you could grab me a bottle of the chocolate syrup? I can't reach it and that shelf is ridiculously high."

Alan's eyes shifted from Josie's outstretched form to the chocolate syrup that was just barely evading her reach. He could easily pull up a ladder and climb up to get it or just go to the back and grab one from their reserve stock. However, since Josie only asked if he could do it, he didn't actually think she wanted him to do it. "Yes, I could," he replied with a nod but didn't move from his spot otherwise. He wasn't being rude. Things just needed to be said to him in a specific way, and if people wanted him to do something, they needed to tell him straight out instead of asking him or suggesting he do it.

At his reply Josie had to control herself not to lash out. Was he seriously pulling that proper wording thing with her. It always irritated her how in grade school she would ask if she could go to the bathroom and the teacher...thinking they were SO funny and clever would reply 'I don't know...can you?' It was apparently a lesson to say may I instead of can I, but it still irritated her to no end.

She shut her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself and forced a smile onto her face trying not to appear as annoyed as she was, "Well will you...please?"

Alan really wasn't trying to be difficult, though his condition didn't allow for him to easy grasp things as others did. A lot of people didn't understand the way they had to talk to him so that he could completely understand their meaning, and they would often get flustered or angry with him... not that he could tell they were. "Will I what?" It was very possible for him to go at this all day until the person found the right words and the right way to talk to him. Though sometimes it was even frustrating for him.

Josie tightened her grip on one of the shelves, this guy obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. Not only was he being immensely difficult he was postponing the deliciousness that was her SDHBFHFOCGB sundae. She took another deep breath 'Don't make a scene Josie, just be calm and say what you want.' She took a step down from the basket,

"Will you please grab me a bottle of the chocolate syrup since I can't reach it?"

Alan smiled when she got down, feeling better that she wasn't on top of that basket anymore, which he doubted was going to hold her weight much longer as they weren't exactly the sturdiest things in the world. Plus, she wasn't latched onto the shelves, which also looked pretty dangerous. "Yes, I will," he said, happy to help with his response. Still though, he didn't move from his spot and just looked at her as if he had just made her day.

Lucky for Josie, Alan's supervisor happened to be walking by as this exchange was taking place and stepped in to intervene. "Alan, get the young lady a bottle of chocolate syrup. We have some in the back," she said. Aha! It finally clicked in his head, and he nodded before turning to go fetch the desired article. His supervisor looked tired as she usually had to deal with this on a daily basis. "You have to tell him to do it or else he won't know what you mean," she explained to Josie.

In no time, Alan returned with the bottle of chocolate syrup and handed it to Josie. "Have a nice day!" he said brightly. Well, they had said that whenever you served a customer you were supposed to wish them a good day.

Josie smiled when he said he would, 'Finally.' But then he didn't move. She raised her eyebrows with that strained smile still on her face as he glanced at the shelf and back at him. Did she really have to tell him to do it now. Honestly she was ready to ring this guys neck, he thought he was being so cute and so clever, yeah, low blood sugar Josie is not someone you want to mess with. But apparently no one wanted that to happen as the supermarket supervisor came over and instructed him to 'get' it for her and off he went. Good, he stopped playing since his boss came over.

Actually, she soon learned, it wasn't because his supervisor came over. His supervisor explained the situation to Josie. Oh! It all made sense now, he wasn't trying to be obnoxious or cute or clever, he couldn't help it. She actually felt a little bad about getting so angry, at least she didn't yell, that wouldn't have helped anything. That was so sad...and tempting...very similar to her little weather boy on the journals last night. He soon returned and handed her the chocolate syrup. She picked her basket back up and put all of her items back in it. Only once the syrup was safely placed in her basket she let her eyes flick to his name tag to his face.

"Thank you, Alan," it clicked in her head, it was the same guy. He hadn't been punking her the other day, this is who he really was. Feeling bad about her previous thoughts only reaffirmed what she was tempted to do yesterday. She could consider it her good deed for the year. She was going to fix him, help him function in society a bit better. Sure Jacen didn't appreciate her help, but Alan might, if he didn't...well he should. She was trying to help. But, it wasn't like she was family so the pouting and whining wouldn't work like with Jacen. He was a boy...and older boy...and she was a very pretty girl...of course. Now how to word this in a way that he would get it.

"I remember you, we spoke through the journals yesterday, you told me about it not raining. I really appreciate it, because if my hair gets wet it turns into a frizzy mess," she examined a strand of her perfectly dry straight hair. "Since you helped me with that and now with the chocolate syrup I think I should thank you properly." She moved a bit closer, not too close, didn't want to scare him. She still wasn't sure of the extent of what was wrong with him. Maybe personal space was important to him, "So...how about you and I go out some time. On a date. You know dinner, movies...maybe a little something after...if we are so inclined." She let a flirty smirk settle on her face.

Alan's supervisor strolled off once Josie started talking again. All she really cared about was that no one complained just so she wouldn't get in trouble. Once she realized Josie was fine with Alan, she left him once more. Alan waved goodbye to his supervisor and thankfully she wasn't looking at him as he did so. He turned back to Josie and smiled. She really was a pretty girl, and Alan could appreciate pretty girls. "Josie Allen," he said as if he was reading her own name off a name tag. Yes, of course he knew her. She was only a year younger and usually the talk of the town.

"Your hair looks nice for the amount of humidity in the atmosphere today." It was the closest thing to a compliment she was going to get considering who she was talking to. Alan wasn't always the smoothest when it came to the ladies, but he was genuinely caring. And when Josie moved closer to him, he didn't even flinch. It was almost as if she hadn't moved at all, or maybe he hadn't noticed the change in distance between them.... or maybe he liked it. "Are you trying to ask me out on a date, Josie Allen?" Forget that she pretty much already had.

Josie grin grew a bit at his compliment of her hair, he showed promise maybe it wouldn't be that hard to help him interact in social situations better. "Thank you," she let her eyes flicker down to the floor as she chanced another step closer. She heard his question about that date and she took one last step towards him, he still had room but she was closer than she had been, they now stood about half a foot away, "Yes, I am trying to ask you on a date Alan...are you saying yes?"

Alan considered it for a moment. He was, by no means, an unintelligent person. He knew the rumors about Josie Allen, how she slept around and never had a steady boyfriend. He knew and understood this, and frankly, Alan felt like that was all right, even for him. He knew about his condition. He knew he wasn't like everyone else and that forming relationships was difficult for him. So, perhaps all Josie Allen really wanted was a short fling with him, and he didn't mind that one bit.

"I am going to say yes." He paused and then... "Yes." He nodded, noticing the closing distance now and deciding his gaze was better spent somewhere down by the lowest shelf. Eye contact wasn't his forte, not by a long shot. Just like he couldn't tell of a person's emotions by their face or their words, he couldn't look them in the eye half of the time, even when he was being perfectly honest, which was just about all the time. "Why are you asking me out, Josie Allen? Are we friends?"

Josie watched his expression and he seemed to actually think it over for a bit. She was a little stunned, most boys wouldn't even let her finish the question before saying yes...actually it usually wasn't her who even did the asking out...so this was a new experience all around. But it wasn't like it was a bad thing, just different. His thinking face was kind of adorable she had to admit. Then she got her answer...yes. Her smile widened and she was about to respond when his eyes flicked down to a shelf. She took a step back thinking she might have invaded his personal bubble,

"Yes, good, so you have my number and I have yours so...I'll call you or you can call me and we can work out a time to meet up for our date." Josie glanced down in her basket and ticked off her mental checklist, that would be everything for her SDHBFHFOCGB sundae, "Well, it was nice to see you again Alan, and thanks...for getting the chocolate syrup for me, I appreciate you help." Normally if she had just asked a guy out and he agreed she would give him a peck on the cheek then leave, give them a hint of what was to come. But Alan was different, it's not that she didn't want to give him a kiss on the cheek, she did, but she didn't want to freak him out...if it would...she'd have to do some research. Figure out how far she can go, what makes him uncomfortable, how slow to go with him. She remembered that he was friends with Toni...one of her former FWBs, he'd probably know, she'd have to check. So she gave him a little smile and a little shrug,

"So...talk to you soon, bye." With that she turned and left.
