It was rare to have such a quiet night at the Spinelli house. Then again, Friday evenings were usually pretty busy for people who actually when out on the weekend, something that Rory rarely did. Rather than pass yet another quiet evening reading, though, the eldest Spinelli was busily making preparations for Mari’s arrival. He was relieved that two of his brothers and both of his parents were safely out of the house, and the Giorgio was safely camped out on the couch, making some major progress in his latest video game.
Rory ruffled his hair affectionately as he wheeled by the couch, then he coasted into the kitchen to pop some of the special kettle corn he’d gotten just for Mari – it was sweet; just like she was. As the microwave hummed, Rory wheeled into the foyer and parked his chair in its usual spot before rising slowly from it and grabbing his elbow crutches, slipping his arms into them easily before hobbling back into the kitchen to retrieve the popcorn and pour it into a large wooden bowl.
Upstairs in his room, the Laurence Olivier version of King Lear was all ready to go. Rory figured it’d be best to let his brother have the couch for the night given how much of a hassle it was to move the gaming systems around. Plus, his room was clean, as it always was, so he’d have nothing to be embarrassed about. Clutter just made it harder for him to move around; it only took one time tripping over a toy to teach him that it was better to clean his room and be able to stay upright. And the bed was probably more comfortable than the couch, anyway. If it had been anyone other than Rory making this arrangement, a normal girl might’ve thought twice. But this was Rory, after all, and he and Mari had had plenty of impromptu movie nights in his room before. Neither of them had anything to worry about.
Rory grinned when the doorbell rang, and he hobbled to the door as fast as he could, smiling brightly at Mari when he opened it. “Hey Mari!” he greeted her cheerfully. “Ready for movie night?”
