Journal: Tarot
If anyone is looking for the enormous book on Tarot Interpretation that's been in the Corner every day since we opened, I've got it.

My card is the Nine of Swords which apparently means something lost or stolen, no time for a gamble. So I guess I won't be putting money on Ballycastle winning the league.

Who else got their fortune told on Saturday? I'm bored and curious, which is a pretty dangerous combination. Also willing to look stuff up if anyone else wants to know what their tarot cards supposedly mean.

There seems to be lots of possible ways to interpret tarot cards. And it can depend on what it's paired with and where in a reading it is. However, since these are on its own, it's a bit different, I suppose. I know the Nine of Swords can also do with fear of the future, worry and excessive worry, pain from within, potentially being hard on yourself, depression, anxiety, and nightmares. Assuming the little fortune teller was accurate, it may also have to do with you being hard on yourself, your concerns and concerns for the future, any stress you may currently be experiencing, or even just some bad sleep. But, at this point, I think you're the only one who can figure out how accurate it is.

From what I remember from Divination, mine has to do with choices, change and thinking about change, material wealth, time for assessing after working hard, desire to invest in long-term things and that whole planning for the long-term type thing, that the extra effort and work will pay off, future success (that will likely have to be worked toward), that a new level has been reached, and a lot about free will, which I guess can go back to choices and change. That's what I think at least, but my tarot books are still packed, and I've not done any kind of reading in awhile so I could be very off! This is all from memory, and, presumably, for fun.

Absolutely. The book goes into way more detail than I have - and there are entire chapters about different decks of cards, and different places in the reading and all that stuff. I'm just focusing on the basic 'this is what the card means' stuff at the beginning because otherwise my head might explode - no matter how interesting it all is. The page on Nine of Swords talks a lot about inner anguish, which is cheerful.

You didn't mention what card you got. If you like, I can compare what you remember to what my book says - though if you have Divination books that weren't printed in the 1970s, yours are probably less rambling more insightful.

Yes, the Nine of Swords is obviously one of the most cheerful cards in any deck! There are so many books out there about the cards and meanings and spreads that I think if you did read it all even in just your one book that it'd be enough to make you a bit bonkers. I always tried to keep it open and simple in my head when going over them.

The Seven of Coins (or Pentacles, depending on the deck). I don't mind the comparison! I think it's fun. It's a bit like a puzzle, but one I definitely wouldn't take too seriously (though I think, sometimes, they can be a nice way to nudge yourself into certain things you may be wondering about).

Tell me The Lovers means something other than the obvious, because otherwise the woman is off her fucking rocker.

From what I remember, sometimes it's less obvious than love and has to two with inner duality, like yin and yang within people. It isn't always about love, but it can be. But it could also be about special relationships like the mentor/mentee relationship some people have, work related relationships. If I remember, it's one of the cards that has to do with choices as well, and it can be a literal "follow your heart" thing, or if you're trying to decide between two things or if you've got some kind of moral dilemma. But it can also be a case of being blind-sided by love, though love doesn't have to be romantic between two people. It can be about harmony between you and someone else or you and something else (like an animal, a job, a house, whatever, really, that you may "fall in love with").

Oh thank fuck for that. Not that any of that is making it clearer for me, but at least it's not likely to be the obvious, because that would be fucking weird.

Sometimes it can be really obvious, but other times it really isn't at all obvious. I think, ultimately, just remember it isn't always about romantic and/or sexual love, change and choices may happen (which could require a "heart" over "head" type of choice), and harmonious relations with you and other people or things in your life. At least, that's how I'd interpret it without much else to go by.

The basic interpretation, according to Marabel le Morgana (which is the fakest and most absurd pen name I've ever seen) is 'a test which you will past, a new love'.

The more detailed explanation talks about 'harmonious union' and choices and also something about accessing a higher power, which I'll write out for you if you're interested in that sort of thing. Or 'the integration of two conflicting parts of yourself'.

They went over this shite in Divination? No wonder I never bothered. Mine was Three of Coins (Alicia was very convincing that it would be fun, but I've no idea what it means).

No idea, I never studied it. We've had this book in the pub for two years and I've never found a use for it before today.

Right - Three of Coins. Also known as the Three of Pentacles. 'A new workmate. A new business partner. Beware of fraud.' And in the details description, lots of stuff about how well you're going to do financially and how fulfilling you'll find your work. Congratulations - hope it's true.

Basic: 'An introduction. A blind date. A forceful partner.'

In detail, it's a card about power - apparently, and it says that it's important to get moving towards your goals. You're going to accomplish great things in the world, as long as you have an initial vision. It's a good time for friendships, but you should remember you have personal power. You'll be surprised by what you can accomplish.

Oh I like introductions. I've never had the others.

But it sounds nice. I like moving towards goals. Though sometimes I'm not sure what the goal is. Maybe I'll know what it is when I get there. That's very empowering. I'll have to remember it.

I drew the Star; either this teller has no idea what they're doing or it's their idea of a sick joke, either way it's not amusing.

Let me see. 'Hope and a bright future.' That seems pretty general, could mean anything.

"After the light of the Tower destroys the false path you were following, the kinder and gentler light of the Star will lead you back to the right path." That could definitely apply to a lot of people this time of year. And then there's "when you cannot help yourself, the Star tells you to look to the heavens for guidance," which my mam would certainly agree with.

It's actually a pretty long entry, and very interesting. If you want, I'll get one of my special quills to copy it all out.

I've probably been sent the wrong card.

It could also mean to stay hopeful and take a chance next time one crops up. It's a good card, a good omen type of card. And it could also be about a new relationship starting soon, possibly of the romantic variety, which is where taking that chance can come in. You also seem like a creative type, so it could do with inspiration. And it signifies that it's a good time to think positively so start thinking positively! Start thinking that it wasn't a mistake but a very good sign for you! And, if I remember, it's also about serenity and renewal and, again, hope.

It was interesting to hear your take on it though; thank you

Too bad the fortune teller didn't know you or probably most of us personally, or I might agree. However, this right there? That is what the card means by thinking positively more! The person sending these cards didn't know you, nor did she know me, nor did she likely know most of us who paid her a visit, so, therefor, even if it's a coincidence and you don't feel it, it can't have been some pointed joke at your expense. Honestly, if that were the case, I imagine there'd be a much better card to give you to have a laugh.

You're welcome.

A pointed joke by the Fates. Optimism just ends up in disappointment at best and getting hurt at worst; it's setting me up for a fall.

If that were true, then everyone who was optimistic would have a terrible, hurt, disappointing life, but that isn't true. I happen to be optimistic and have a good life, thank you very much.

The King of Coins/Pentacles, and said The circle, drawn, will never wane. In every sphere it yet will gain. Maybe I should be the one putting money on Quidditch?

Let's see - 'a gift from an older man, also a promotion'. Not sure that Quidditch winnings count as a gift, though I suppose they might. Bet on the team with the oldest male captain, maybe?

The longer description seems kind of confusing. You should listen to the advice of others, but also you enjoy the power you have over them and are always hiding something? Not sure I understand this one.

'Triumph, overcoming obstacles'. Maybe Puddlemere are going to win the cup! I mean, I'd rather Ballycastle did, but there you go.

Detailed explanation says it's about emotions, though, so maybe not. (Though I guess you'll probably get emotional if you win!) 'Triumph over emotions', 'almost anything is within your grasp', 'transcend your fears'.

Have you still got that book, Dominic? I've had no luck at all figuring mine out, even with my old Divination notes dug out at my parents' house in Glasgow.

I got the Three of Cups and then A sturdy tree with weathered bark. / A lightning flash that splits the dark.

Darling, I'm terrified and I've been trying to ignore that damned seer since Victis but help me out... Tell me I'm misremembering and the three of swords isn't as bad as I think?

And then there was this... Something hidden out of sight, / Seems dark, yet it may bring you light.
