Intelligent rats sound good, until you remember that their intelligence means they can understand things like family and children, that they can feel love and grief and that they have the wits to know how to use their fabric bedding to hang themselves.

Were they not your rats, or at least not in your care? Did you not care for them outside of food, water, and a clean place to live? If you put time and care into them, I don't see why you shouldn't be the recipient of the flowers, or at the very least condolences, but I can understand if you'd rather not receive them. Regardless, my condolences on the loss of the rats.
