Journal: Melinda Bobbin
I hope all of you out there is enjoying Christmas. I know I am. Things are fairly busy this year with more people recognising the wonders of using amazing cakes for centrepieces, which makes for some interesting challenges for me.

That being said, this year’s yule logs are a hit. Just last week we’ve had two groups of customers in to learn how to make the almond pinecones and this week we’ve another planned for Thursday right after closing.

New Years is coming up very soon, so now’s the time to get any orders for New Year’s Eve in.

In other news; on January 1st, I will be taking over full ownership of Sweet Nothings. It was always the plan to have the shop be closed the first two weeks of January for renovations, but with these new changes, Sweet Nothings will be closed for all of January, with a grand opening and revealing of a slightly new concept and a brand new menu. Those of you who have already ordered for special occasions in January, you can rest assured that they will still be done, and I will be taking in a few more orders, should the occasion rise, but it’ll be on a case by case basis.

[Private to Bryn]
As the shop will be closed for all of January rather than just the originally planned 2 weeks, I wanted to hear if you’d be interested in doing the hours you’re usually here on something else (like delivery or helping with the new menu)?

[Private to Cho, Marietta, and Roger]
So
I
Yeah

Cakes make the best centrepieces because you can eat them. They aren't wasteful dust collectors.

I probably wouldn't have put it like that in an ad for cake centrepieces, but I believe you've boiled it down to the very essential here.

If you ever do an ad, you could note they're almost too lovely to eat. Almost. Or that they taste as good as they look.

Definitely something to keep in mind, though I've not yet made a centrepiece that wasn't meant to be eaten. By now, it seems, that I've made enough of a name for the shop that people who recognise the name know they can expect something that looks good, and usually tastes even better.

You work in advertising?

That's why I added the almost in twice.

No. I work behind the bar at Wingbeat. Although I suppose i advertise the club's drink as much as any other bartender might.

Hmm, bartenders always struck me more as counsellors or therapists than advertisers.

To me, that is a misconception. Or with me, it is a misconception. One of the two! But I've yet to serve a patron looking for advice and therapy.

Admittedly; I'm speaking from what I know of stereotypes, as I'm only likely to spend time by the bar if I know people there. No doubt there's more than one type of people tending bars, just like with any other profession.

Let's just say, that when it reached the point where the only thing that kept me from jumping into bed with Mac (on the off chance that it might garner some sort of reaction) was that Mac's head over heels for Lavender, I thought it better to

I thought it wasn't supposed to hurt when you're the one doing the breaking up. It's supposed to be easier!

Mac? I mean, he's hot and a good neighbor and all but... standards.

And honey, break ups always hurt. I still say we sick Mac on him to make him pay.

Yes, standards was why it only got to one date but the sex wasn't too bad. Like I said, it was just to get some sort of reaction from him.

You know what would happen if I sicked Mac on him, right?

Oh goodness, I'd nearly forgotten about that.

AND YES I DO KNOW. Which is why I say we do it. One date or not, Mac would break knee caps for you, you know you're his favorite (besides Lav of course). You know I heard that he's bringing a date (I assume her!) to the family Christmas brunch?

So let's say that Mac breaks Oliver's knee caps, right? That would probably also mean a black eye or two and Oliver not being able to play. That would mean a lot of upset fans and coaches and it would give the press a lot to write about. And you know what the press would zoom in on? Why. They would focus on why Mac would do that, and oh! What do you know? Oliver and Melinda Bobbin are no longer an item and suddenly another eligible handsome bachelor is doing the bidding of Melinda. Guess we all know who she's Potioning now, don't we?

I vote we don't, no matter how satisfying it would be. It's not worth risking Sweet Nothings again.

Right now I just wish I had a full free day on this side of Christmas, so I could get inappropriately drunk and do things I'd regret in the morning without losing business over it.

Oh you, always thinking ahead.

Having Mac break his knee caps would be more satisfying than a hangover. Wood isn't worth a hangover, "eligible bachelor" or not.

Say the word and I will clear the schedule of all things non-Mel, this side of Christmas or not.

I have to; I've been dating a Quidditch pro. Comes with the territory, apparently.

That's sweet and I'd love to take you up on it, but I can't clear my schedule before Christmas. New Year's Eve, once all the cakes and desserts have been delivered, which is probably the worst plan ever, I know, but it's what I have right now.

It is absolute balls that you can't even have a break up without worrying about idiots like Skeeter and others jumping in to have their say.

I'm available whenever you need me. All you have to do is say the word.

Agreed, though I have to admit that I hadn't really gone into it with the notion of ever having to deal with the break up.

Thank you, Mari. Right now I don't know what I need; I just know that I'm glad to have as much work as I do, but your company/presence is always welcome, even while I work in the kitchen.

How are you doing? You need anything? Dad had some lollipops with a potion for sore throats made up. Huge hit with the children, he claims.

Also: for my family party on the 21st, my order for one of those yule logs is all set, right?

As always, you're at the top of my list of people to invite.

It is all set, though for the sake of being certain: did you choose the triple chocolate or the vanilla with the chocolate creme?

Also, would it be alrigh with you if I sent a little something along extra? I have an order that includes a lot of smaller items that has to look exactly the sameand it's just easier to bake a huge amount and then only pass along the absolute perfect ones. Obviously I won't send anything that's not great with you, just the ones that doesn't fall inside the same strict measures.

It was the vanilla with the chocolate creme.

Anything you want to send my way, you know they'll be appreciated (even the not perfect ones always taste incredible!). My mom's a huge fan of your sweets anyway. Just add the extras to my bill.

Vanilla it is, thoug if you change your mind, the last chance to change it is the morning of the 21st.

They're not not perfect, they're simply just not exactly the same as the others. Yes, it's a nitpicky customer, but their pay is well worth it all, which means that you can get it at an almost ridiculously low price.

Low prices? Even better! Though you know I never worry about paying you what your work is worth. And if ever I come up against a treats price that's outside my budget, Mum and Dad can't say no, either.

I won't be changing my mind, I promise. How busy are you? I can't imagine the 21st leaves you much time to change orders. How are you doing with the craziness?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]_melinda_

Well, there's a difference between being able to pay for amazing treats and being willing/insane to pay for insane perfection. Wanting 25 x 5 bûches with shining glace to be exactly alike and being willing to pay for the extra time and the 30 x 5 extra bûches to get them but without wanting the supposedly imperfect ones? That's just, well, insane. Not that I'm complaining, some people just have too much money, I think.

For the yule logs there's a lot of leeway. The one you've ordered is simply a larger version than the ones we have on the regular December menu, so I'll be baking both vanilla and chocolate in the morning. Whether I use one or the other doesn't really matter, hence why it really, truly, won't be a bother to have the order change up until then.

It's pretty crazy, but it keeps me busy, keeps my head off other things and it gives me an excuse to listen to Muggle Christmas music on repeat.

How are things in the store?

Yeah, I'd be happy to do anything really. I can always have a word with Seamus and see if he needs me to do a few more hours at the pub. So if the hours aren't there, it shouldn't hit me too hard.

Now that's a compliment if I ever saw one. Everything is as ready as it can be, and written into the plans for the next week, so it's going accordingly.

And again; thank you. The logs are delicious, and even the mushrooms and pinecones are edible. I believe I may have driven Bryn off mushrooms for a while, but all of November's work is really paying off now.

I look forward to seeing it too, though I think it will be great.
