Who: Ted and Andromeda
What: CHRISTMAS!!!!
When: December 25, 1971
Where: Ted's flat
Warnings: AWESOMENESS
Status: In progress

Andromeda showing up at his flat had been the last thing Ted had expected when he'd been cleaning up the kitchen the morning at the start of Christmas hols at Hogwarts. In fact, he wasn't sure that he'd get to see Andromeda at all until she'd graduated. However, the moment she showed up, trunk in hand, Ted was pretty sure he understood what had happened. So, while happy to have her, he felt a certain sadness in knowing that she would no longer have her family.

Today was perhaps one of his favourite days outside of Andromeda's birthday: Christmas. He loved having the chance to get presents for Andromeda and planning things for Andromeda, and he could do both without getting a look from her on her birthday and Christmas. He'd gotten the present with the intention of owling it to her once she'd returned to school, but as she showed up, he figured he could give it to her in person now.

He'd been up early, making tea and breakfast (pancakes and sausage) so that it would be perfect. Everything had to be perfect because it was their first Christmas together. Alone but together. Nothing was allowed to mess this up, and he hoped that she was happy when she woke up. He wondered idly if he should wake her, but it was Christmas. She could sleep in on Christmas. There were charms to keep food warm. Once more Ted checked to make sure that everything was set up perfectly before feeling that everything was as perfect as it could be. He just hoped she liked everything.

Andromeda was not asleep, not anymore. She had stirred a bit when Ted left their bed, but not woken entirely, dozing comfortably and unconsciously migrating into the warm spot she had left. But she started to wake, slowly, to the sounds and smells of food being made in the kitchen. She could hear Ted shuffling around, and that made her smile. He had been excited about Christmas, and she knew without a doubt that he had prepared something special. He wasn't the only one who had surprises, though.

Very quietly, she slipped out of bed and over to the closet and dressed; she'd bought the outfit specifically for this occasion, not only because she knew Ted was likely to be extremely cheery about the holiday and enjoy the bright colors, but because it was her first Christmas without her family. She needed the bright colors to cheer her up, too, especially since the earrings were not new. They had been a Christmas present from her parents in her third year.

She wasn't going to think about that now, though. She tiptoed, barefoot, out towards the kitchen, intending to sneak up behind him, but when she peeked out to see him, she was spotted. "Damn antlers," she said with a laugh, as she moved over to wrap her arms around his waist and give him a kiss. "Happy Christmas, Ted."

Ted let out a soft laugh as he spotted Andromeda. His eyes took in her outfit, which only made him smile widely. "I like the antlers," he said quietly, arms moving to wrap around Andromeda as she came closer. He returned the kiss, excitement flooding his entire body. "Happy Christmas, Andromeda."

He gestured to the small dining table, smiling brightly. "I made breakfast. Are you hungry or do you want to open presents first?" He tried to keep how excited he was about presents out of his expression, but he knew how well he knew how to hide his feelings from Andromeda. It wasn't very good. That was something he'd learned early on. He almost always thought that his secrets were very secret, but more often than not, Andromeda was aware that he was planning something.

"I got you something special. A first to go with our first Christmas. I hope you like it, though. It's okay if you don't, but I thought you might. My present, I mean. I think you know I meant that. You did know I meant that, didn't you?" And he was rambling. "Sorry," he said, looking just a bit shy. "I was excited."

It was true, Ted was by far the easiest person to read that Andromeda had ever met. Having spent her life among composed and stoic faces, polite and 'elite' company, she'd found his transparency incredibly refreshing. She had known he'd been planning things, had been able to tell from his excitement, but had not tried to find out anything more than that, because she did like surprises.

"Presents, then food," she said with a grin. "Or else I'll be too excited and give myself a stomachache from eating too quickly to get to the presents. I got you something, too. And I'm sure I'm going to like what you got me."

She moved to the tree, almost skipping with the energy that came from Christmas morning and bright striped clothing and antlers on her head, to pick up the brightly wrapped presents they'd both stuck underneath it. "Here," she said, holding out his present before starting to unwrap her own.

Out of habit, she started opening it with the kind of decorum that would have been expected back at home, then realized what she was doing and stopped minding if she ripped the paper a bit in her excitement. "Oh," she said, when she unwrapped the slippers, fingers running over the soft slippers and toying with their ears. "These are amazing. I love them!"

Ted let out a small, excited noise. He couldn't have helped himself. He was excited about everything and, as much as he tended to stay at normal volumes, Ted couldn't keep that little moment of excitement from bubbling out. "We can't have stomach aches," he agreed, laughing a little. "I think we would both feel rather ill if we ate first." Which was true. Her excitement, would only fuel his own.

Ted took his present from her, eyes lighting up. "You got me a present!" He liked presents. He often said it wasn't important to get him presents, but the truth was, he loved presents.

He opened the present quickly, smiling brightly as he did so. "It's perfect!" He liked snow globes. He liked them even more when they were given to him from Andromeda. He liked everything better when it was given by Andromeda. As Andromeda unwrapped her present, Ted grinned. "You do? Brilliant! I hoped you would. I thought you could use some slippers...for the house to keep your feet warm."

Andromeda slid the slippers onto her feet and wiggled her toes around. They were so Ted; he loved animals and fun little things like this, but they suited her, too. "I really do," she said. "It's like my feet are wrapped in soft clouds and warm bunny fur... and they're adorable."

She grinned up at him, seeing that he had opened his present. "It's a frame," she said, suddenly feeling a bit shy. Ted loved presents, and loved her, but she wanted him to like her present for its own sake, not just because it was a present and it was from her. "I thought - we could take a picture today, and put it in there."

Ted was pleased. He'd wanted her to like his present, and she was wearing them now. "Good." He wanted to ask her if she'd be able to take them with her to school or not, but he also didn't want to bring up the fact that they'd have to be apart again for even a second. Ted liked that they got to spend time together. It was his favourite part.

He peeked at the frame in the snow globe, smiling a little. "Oh! I think that would be good!" As he let it sink in, an idea popped into his head. "Oh! Oh! Then we can say it snowed on our first Christmas...even though it didn't really...but the snow globe! All we have to do is shake it, and we have snow on our first Christmas together!" He gestured widely with his arms, grinning widely. "This is by far the best present."

Oh, she was definitely taking them to school. Andromeda hadn't thought that far ahead, but she had been trying to shed some of her old identity since coming here, wearing the clothes that she so rarely got to wear, the ones she liked for herself. When she returned to school, she was going to continue doing that. She was going to wear her bunny slippers from Ted around Slytherin House and ignore everyone who looked at her strangely. With any luck, they'd all treat her as if she didn't exist.

That wouldn't matter, because when she was here, she existed more than she ever had anywhere else. She was comfortable and happy and she made Ted happier than she'd ever managed to make anyone in her family for a very long time. That was really the best Christmas present ever.

"We could go and find a place where there's lots of snow," she said, standing up to give walking around in her bunny slippers a try. Red and green stripes, antlers, and bunny slippers - truly, this was the oddest outfit she'd ever worn, but it was appropriate. "You'd better be careful about starting a snowball fight, though. I have wicked aim." She skipped over to him and planted a kiss on his nose. "Right there. That's where my first snowball will hit."

Ted smiled, watching Andromeda walking around in her bunny slippers. He thought they were cute, but he thought that Andromeda was the most beautiful girl he ever saw in them. Then again, he thought that about her all the time. She was the most amazing person he'd ever met, and she was with him. He never quite understood how, but whatever it was, he was glad.

"I'd like that." He chuckled softly, nose scrunching up as Andromeda kissed his nose, arms moving to wrap around her again. "I will be very careful. I promise. Very careful to make sure I have a proper protective wall before I start throwing snowballs, that is." Ted smiled widely before pressing small kisses on her cheeks. "So you best be sure to be prepared."

"You'd better make it a really good one," Andromeda informed him. If she couldn't get snowballs past his protective wall, she thought she'd probably just charge it and leap over it, if she could. Charge through it, if she couldn't. Well, that was assuming that it was a wall of snow. If he built a wall out of rocks, she wasn't going to go throwing herself against it.

Really, she would have been content to stay here where it was warm and cozy, but anywhere with Ted felt warm to her. She was so grateful that having her here made him happy, that he didn't seem to be getting tired of her company in the least. And for her part - well, as much as she felt sorrow at losing her family, she also felt relief. The relief of making a hard choice, a choice that would have hurt regardless of how she chose. She didn't know if she had made it in the way that would hurt the least, but she had made it in the way that would make her happiest; in the way that would make it easiest for her to get past the sadness.

"Sounds like we're going to have a fierce snowball war on our hands," she said, grinning mischievously. "So we should also eat up, for strength."

"It will be the best one," he joked. He was sure someone could make a better one, but Andromeda always managed to draw out his inner child, which may not have been quite as difficult as it sounded. All the same, he liked it.

At the mention of food, Ted remembered the food sitting at the table and smiled. "Yes! I made breakfast! We should certainly eat." He took her hand in his before leading her over to the table, trying to remember to walk and not run. He was inside.

Pulling out her chair, he motioned for her to sit in it. "I didn't know how much you wanted, so I thought I'd let you choose. There's plenty of food. We should probably make sure to rest and let our stomachs digest our food. That way we don't feel poorly when we are having our snowball fight." It sounded like a good enough reason to him for them to eat and then sit together on the couch and tell funny stories or watch the Christmas tree or just cuddle. All of it sounded nice.

Funny that he thought she brought out his inner child, because Andromeda was fairly certain it was the other way around. That was the joke, though; the truth was, he brought out the best in her. It wasn't hard to see the best of Ted, though - he was amazing, impossibly amazing, happy and energetic and generous and loving.

"You've done that before, haven't you?" she asked, amused. She could picture him when he was younger, stomach full of food, trying to run around and throw snowballs at people, probably his siblings. She poked him gently in the stomach. "Something tells me you have a habit of trying to have too much fun before you've properly digested."

She sat down, legs folded under her with her feet tucked beneath her knees. She had plenty of table manners, and she did use them, but being free to sit comfortably in her chair was one of the things she loved about staying here with Ted. She also didn't hesitate to show her appreciation and eagerness to try the food he'd made, which would have been frowned upon in her house. "Oh. You made pancakes! And sausage, mm," she said happily, serving herself. She paused before reaching for the syrup to smile at him, warmly. "I really love being here with you, Ted."

Ted gave Andromeda an innocent look. "I don't know what you mean. I always wait the proper amount of time before physical activity." Perhaps not. It wasn't like it was something he did all the time, however. He just got really excited. His mother had warned him each time, but he had just done it anyway.

Sitting down at the table, he smiled at Andromeda's excitement. He liked to see it, even if it was only a little. He liked knowing she was happy, knowing he'd made her happy. If that could be his job for the rest of his life, Ted would be happy to do it. "I wanted everything to be perfect," he said quietly, starting to put some food on his own plate.

I really love being here with you, Ted. He could feel his heart swell in his chest and all he could do was stare wonderingly at her as she poured syrup on her pancakes. After a moment, he recovered enough to say, "I love you being herewith me, Andromeda. It's my favourite."

Andromeda laughed and proceeded to drown her pancakes in syrup. It was Christmas, after all, a day to have sugar. Everything in this flat was the embodiment of what the spirit of the holiday should be, she thought - good food, a bright and shining tree, warmth and comfort, and love. Not just what the holiday should be about, but what life should be about.

And oh, that look he gave her - the one that didn't look past her appearance, her Black features, but saw them as a part of her, and saw her heart and soul too - it never failed to make her feel special and beautiful, even in her near-clashing stripes and antlers and bunny slippers. It made her feel like the center of the universe, his universe. And in the Ted universe, everything was happy and warm and delightful and deliciously sweet, while the world she had left behind was a whole galaxy away, unable to touch her.

"Everything is perfect," she assured him, as she took a bite of his pancake. Mm, that was delicious. "It really is. I'd stay here forever if you wanted me to." And she would. Well, she wanted to finish school - no matter how hard it would be. Even more than before, she needed an education to find a job, to do something with her life. So that she could have money, more than the amount she'd managed to save up and squirrel away once it had occurred to her that she might run away. Since that had happened before meeting Ted, she had a good amount stashed away, but this holiday alone had diminished it significantly.

Ted was happy. In fact, he was more than happy. He didn't know the word for that, but whatever it was, that's what he was right now. The tree was lovely and he couldn't lie that he was excited about the pancakes (because they were delicious), but the best part was that Andromeda was sharing with him.

Lightly tapping her hand with his finger, he let out a small laugh before stealing the syrup from her. With anyone else, he would never have thought to do such a thing, but it was different here. Andromeda was different from other people. She would think it was funny and so he knew it was okay.

"I'm glad," he replied, amusing himself by stabbing a bit of sausage with his fork and eating it. He'd been focusing on trying to stab another piece when Andromeda spoke again. "Forever?" It was another moment before he smiled widely. "Well, one day I figure we can get something bigger than this flat." He looked down at his food nervously for a moment. "I mean...if you were already planning on staying, we might as well figure on a house or something with a yard and everything."

Andromeda did think it was funny. She was enjoying all the little differences between her old life and the new one that she was embarking upon. Those were big differences, such as sharing a bed with someone and not having a house elf, and small differences, like not needing to worry about table manners. Even so, after she grinned at him and turned her attention back to her food, her movements with her fork and knife and the way she ate were still fairly refined out of habit, even if she did it with more gusto and less care for appearances than usual.

"Yes," she said. "I mean - I don't ever want you to feel obligated to let me stay with you, or even be with me at all, just because of what happened with my family. I love being here, but I only love it so much because it makes you happy, too." She smiled at him. "I don't ever want to make you unhappy."

"Although," she added, as she cut up her sausage; she took a bite, chewed, and swallowed before continuing, "I was still planning to go back to school after the hols. But after that, forever. If that's how long you'll want to have me around."

Ted would have to remember that pancakes really were the best choice when it came to breakfast. Though, he might choose waffles sometime. He liked breakfast. Maybe they could do breakfast for dinner...but...something else, perhaps. He didn't know. He just liked that when he was planning meals, he was planning for more than himself. That and having someone to talk to was nice.

"Obligated? No. No, it's not like that." As if to emphasize the point, he shook his head. He did not think of it as an obligation. "I wouldn't ever get tired of you. Not even a little. I am very happy. I promise."

Ted didn't want Andromeda to think she had to do anything like find other living arrangements. He intended to keep her around if he could. He didn't want her to go away. Not even for a little. However, he was quite aware that was very selfish of him, so he drew in a breath before letting it out. "Of course. Must finish your studies. I'm sure you'll be brilliant at whatever it is you choose to do. And of course you can stay forever after that." Already his mind was going over how to save money. Perhaps he would start giving his mother money to put away for him. The thing that held true, was he was going to save money so he could make sure that Andromeda would stay.

Andromeda wasn't sure she thought there was a best choice when it came to breakfast. Pancakes were delicious, but so were waffles, and so was French toast - and so were eggs, and potatoes, and bacon, and.. the list went on and on. She liked breakfast. Liked food, really - she was all about actually letting herself like things without worrying about how that would reflect on her.

"Oh, good," she said, smiling widely at him. "Because everything's changed now, you know. My future is mine from here on out. I'm going to finish school so that I can get a job, so that I can do whatever I want with my life, I really want you to be in it. Also," she added, pausing with a bite of pancake partway to her mouth, "There don't have to be any secrets anymore. That's the other part of your Christmas present."

She took the bite of pancake, and chewed it. "I expect lots of letters and pictures by owl when I'm back at school, okay? I'm going to write to you all the time."

That was perhaps even better than the snow globe picture frame. No more secrets. Ted's eyes lit up and he bounced a little in his seat, feeling much younger than he really was. "No secrets? None?" It was almost like an invitation for him to shout his love from the rooftops, only Ted wasn't really much for shouting. Not if he could help it. The trust was, he didn't need to shout to express the level of excitement he was feeling, because he was sure his facial expressions were enough.

Ted started laughing in the middle of chewing a bit of pancake, trying to keep his mouth shut. In the end he just covered his mouth while he laughed. He forced himself to swallow his food before responding. "Of course I'll send lots of letters and pictures. I would send myself if I thought I could, but I don't think the owls or the Hogwarts professors would be very pleased at the notion."

Everything was wonderful. Andromeda wanted him to be a part of her life. She wanted him and how could he ever refuse her? There wasn't any molecule or atom in his body even remotely interested in doing that. Not at all. "I am yours for as long as you will have me," he said sincerely. "Nothing could make me say otherwise."

Oh Merlin, Andromeda felt incredibly stupid for ever having doubted that he might not be just as eager to have her here as she was to be here. If anything, he looked more excited about it than she was. So excited and happy that he was nearly choking on his pancake, and she was laughing too because his laughter was contagious, thanking her lucky stars that she had already swallowed. "No," she managed to get out, slightly breathless. "No more secrets. I thought, if you wanted - do you usually have Christmas dinner with your family?"

She felt slightly awkward asking that, because she was basically trying to invite herself to Christmas dinner. Then she had forgotten to be awkward because she was laughing even harder at the idea of him sending himself through owl post, and had to raise one of her hands to wipe away tears of mirth. "I could try to smuggle you into my trunk," she suggested, grinning at him, eyes sparkling with amusement. She started to take another piece of her pancake, but then his next words made her heart swell, and she wanted to kiss him more than she wanted food. She leaned over, fingers curling in his shirt, and did just that. "I want you forever."

He was her perfect, shining boy, the one that had shown her what real happiness could be like, who had accepted her for everything she was. It wasn't entirely accurate to say she'd run away to be with him, but she had him to thank for having the courage to pursue the life she wanted. She wasn't going to give him up easily.

Ted didn't mind that slight discomfort that came with trying to eat and laugh at the same time. Especially if Andromeda was laughing with him. As long as Andromeda was there and they were happy, it didn't matter. It was perhaps more prudent not to actually choke on his food, however.

Smiling a little, Ted nodded at her question. "Yes. I do." Which he'd meant to mention on multiple occasions, but for some reason, Andromeda had the power to make him nervous. He let out a laugh at her mention of smuggling him in her trunk, doubling over slightly. His sides hurt and he was having trouble breathing, but it was the good sort of hurting. The kind where you knew that everything was amazing.

Ted returned the kiss, his whole body seeming to be filled with joy. "Then I am yours forever." And he meant it. No matter what else happened, he would always be hers, and if she planned on keeping him forever, he supposed it was perfectly acceptable to suppose that she would always be his. Nothing would make him happier than to always have Andromeda and to let her always have him in return. "Come to dinner. Mum's been asking about you since I first told her your name. Allison and Kimberly, too. Dad even. I send owls, and most of what I get back is, 'And how is that lovely young lady you keep talking about?'." He blushed slightly, knowing full well that gave away at least a little bit as to how often he spoke of her, which was perhaps a little in excess, but he could hardly help himself. "Mum always makes too much food anyway."
