The time spent on paperwork over the weekend, even with Mag's birthday party the night before and the meetings in the morning, had paid off; Merri had gotten to a perfect stopping point by eleven thirty, which was enough time for him to make his way over to the Theatre District without needing to rush. He was fifteen minutes early; it was unlikely that Emily was here yet. Still, Merri couldn't help but to look around the restaurant to see if he couldn't catch sight of her, his heart pounding as he did so. Merri never could blame Cormac for his wariness of the undead; Merri, too, had his own fear of ghosts and anything related to the supernatural, after all, and he wasn't sure what to expect when he saw his old friend. Would she be completely unchanged? According to all the bestiaries, the undead did not have sound minds of their own, only attacking as though by some command be it a curse or the control of whoever had raised them. Merri doubted that ghosts could use the network but there had been stranger things that wandering spirits had done, too. Would Emily even show, given that? He shook his head as the waiter sat him at a table. No, no. She would come. She was not a ghost and she was definitely not undead. Something must have happened when or after she had 'died,' but it was not a matter that Merri would press today, not unless Emily appeared comfortable discussing it. She hadn't been willing to discuss it on the network, not yet. He doubted she'd be willing today. It didn't matter. Merri wanted to see her. That a friend of his was back from the dead, and in no such evil way -- it was a true miracle of Faram indeed, even if she had never truly been dead in the first place. |
