This town is weirder than I thought. There's doppleganger demon types around, and it's like some of the locals know about them, but DON'T know about them.

And for some reason, this old woman's doppleganger wanted pickled beets.

Why pickled beets?

Canned spinach, I get, but pickled beets?

How about people stop pickling things just because they can?

I think pickling is a way to keep things longer over the winter months. It stretches back to — you know what, you're not interested in that.

But is that the reason now? Or is it pickling for pickling sake?

In this case, the woman gardens, so I think it's to save her produce from going bad before she can use it.

And, ew. That sounds gross.

Yeah neither did I. Been there, done that, not eager to do it again.

You should have seen it. Just beets and juice down the front of her nightgown.

Oof. Not a good visual.

I have, actually. Not really a fan of beets in general so pickling them doesn't make them any better for me.

You do the best with what you've got. Though as far as pickling goes I don't see how that could work with beets.

Locals are almost universally stupid. Too trained and comfortable in their own habitats. It can be worth it to keep track of the stories they tell, though.

I wouldn't say the locals are stupid. Just because they don't notice what's going on means there's something keeping them from noticing. I've picked up a few things around here that I wouldn't have if I hadn't been listening to them.

No, they are. Mostly because they don't understand what counts as important information.

Not to say they're any dumber than other cloisters. But being comfortable somewhere usually means you're blinded to deeper warning signs. And listening to the local gossip can be fruitful if you catch the right tidbits.

All I know is that the woman seemed to know that she had one, but ONLY after we saw her. Then she did some kind of chanting which sort of sucked the thing up into a pickled beet jar.

Beets have fibre, antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and manganese. Put them in a salad or roast them with a bit of thyme and they're really good. I prefer them fresh, but maybe that lady likes that the pickled last longer.

It's the locals that are pickling lobstrosity that confuse the shit out of me.
