While I appreciate the hotel-warming present in the form of a free tablet, even I might find it a bit of a stretch to think I've attracted a secret admirer in the twelve and a half hours I've been here. Not to mention the fact that the presence of strangers babbling about marigolds and enchanted forests and Christmas presents leaves a bit to be desired in the way of sanity and coherence. Is this, like, a support forum for the mentally deficient? Because that's really going to detract from my enjoyment of the tablet, even if it did come with Temple Run 2 installed.

Finally, minor detail, there seems to be a man in my head. Is this something that can be fixed with a liberal dosage of Xanax?

You got a free tablet? The only free thing I've gotten out of this is a journal that's pretending to be two hundred years old, but is actually only about ten. Want to trade?

Unless there's some infomercial-esque fine print roping me into the purchase of a timeshare in Orlando, yeah, I think it's free. Showed up on my doorstep a few hours after I moved in, plain brown wrapping, no return address. Even though no one is supposed to have any idea where I'm staying. Right now I'm opting for appreciation rather than all-consuming suspicion and concern.

I think I'm good with the tablet, actually. Though I'm sure you're making the offer out of the goodness of your heart, I happen to prefer Angry Birds over moth-eaten parchment.

Well, the tablet goes with the man, and the man goes with your head, and you go with your city. So it is all intertwined, you see?

And yet he hardly seems like the type to go with a tablet. He's big on the 'thee's and 'thou's and the swords and the armour. And is it my city so soon?

Is he now? Well those are always fun. And if you're in it, it is your city until you leave.

While we're at it, he's not so big on the sense-making. Is that also supposed to be fun?

Ooh, yes? Yes! Swords and armour and a lovely load of nonsense? Because you speak if you are on the desert side of the door, I would wager a plate of petit fours on it, in fact. And anyone who is nonsense in your head sounds ever so perfect and yes, that is oodles worth of fun, don't you see?

I'm sure that's a very significant wager in your mind, but I don't eat sweets. 'Desert side' as in Las Vegas? [...] I guess this door has something to do with the key, huh?

Confusion, yes. Irritation, sure. Fun? That is yet to be seen.

An entire plate, my dear desert sweetness! How could it not be a significant wager? Though tell me not that you don't eat sweets! How could you possibly carry on without them? Doesn't your mouth, your mind, your very soul cry out for sweetness? [...] Or are you finding it elsewhere, naughty thing? I bet you are. There, I have found my answer without your help.

And if you have a key, it make sense to have a lock, though not always, as that isn't always the way of things, but yes, I have found that here you have a lock and that lock is in a door and that door is in a hotel and that is why you have a man in your head where there was not one before, one assumes. And oh! It makes me want to pick you apart and find out who you have and where you are getting your sweets, but you are in Las Vegas, yes, and so I cannot.

Fun. There is always fun, you must only look to find it.

My mouth, my mind, and my very soul cry out for very different things entirely. You are not wrong to assume that my sweetness arrives via other avenues. You are a most clever thing, to be sure.

And is that not the thing? There was no man in my head before, but I was, before, another man. A man with influence of a separate character. And try as you might to pick and prod, you will not find me and I will not surrender to the poking, probing finger of a curious subject.

Oh. Oh, I like you. Now I am cross that you are in Las Vegas. But aren't you clever as well. Though no picking and no prodding is no fun, my desert sweetness. Why do you deprive me of my little joys?

And where, might I ask, are you?

I am rather clever. I suppose if you ask nicely, I might be flattered into a little prodding.

I am somewhere not Las Vegas, darling. Of course. You take that pretty key you have and you find out where the be-armoured man in your head is from, and then maybe I will tell you the prettypretty secrets of where I am.

And I always ask nicely. Except when I don't. But almost always, I promise. And only a little prodding is boring. And I get cross when I'm bored.

That's an awfully demanding request for just a 'maybe', pet. Just how pretty is pretty? I like pretty.

You are a most thoroughly unreassuring individual, you know that?

Pretty. Sights and smells and tastes, oh the tastes, darling. It is so much lovelier than the dreary gray of her world. It's closer to yours in face, though even better.

Are you truly looking to a book for reassurance, while you live in a world whose books are not known for such things?

You don't think that books can reassure? Quite the contrary, I find. There is nothing so comforting as a familiar book and its tales in moments of turmoil. And anyway, this is not a book on my end.

Only if you go more contextual. Are you trying to fix the voice or fix having one? One might be susceptible than the other but really it's anyone's guess or science experiment.

The second one. I have more than enough wonderful opinions and philosophies of my own - no need to throw any more in on top. Barring the total expulsion of said voice, however... fixing him might do some good. He doesn't seem entirely [...] stable.

Welcome to the club. Your membership pin is in the mail. I was going to suggest reasoning with him until you said the last bit. Mine's a little offkilter too but she'll listen.
