[Jack actually chuckles at that, if tiredly.] You really find your hobbies by reading books about finding hobbies? That doesn't seem like a great way to find a passion for something, but maybe it's just me.

[Pause] Do you need to be passionate about something to enjoy it, sport? I like diners, and art. [totally comfortable putting those two together] And theater. There's got to be something aside from guitar and your friend's kid that counts as downtime.

[Quietly.] I always have before. [Something's held back there, since it's not the sort of thing you lay on someone you only recently met.] Not recently, no. I don't think there is. I don't remember the last time I went to a movie. A few years ago, I think. With an old friend. [And the mention of her stings, so he goes quiet for a half-second.] Is that sort of thing really required to be a good asset?

[Simply] Yeah. It is. You don't spend enough time away from the job, you forget what it is to be one of them. And then you don't blend. You can't. And then you get dangerous. [It sounds like experience] We all need things to ground us, sport. So go see a movie with old friends and try out some of those books. Maybe you're not passionate about it. Maybe you learn to be.

You mean one of the people out on the street? Normal people? It's been a lot longer than my term with the CIA since I've been one of them.

...Maybe. You might be right.

[Quietly] Sometimes the only way we can do what we do is to sound, talk, look, feel like one of them. We fuck up, buttercup, but then we're dragged back. Same way people out there are.

[A laugh; brief but real] I know I'm right, sport. It's why I'm the voice in your ear.

...I imagine so. [There isn't a lot of conviction in that, though.]

They wouldn't give me a handler who wasn't infallible, I guess.

Trust me. [Entirely convinced. There's a warm sound to it - and then a bark of laughter] I wouldn't be walking around on three legs if I was infallible, buttercup.

[Warming again.] I'd forgotten about that. Maybe this isn't such a good idea after all.

[a mild huff of laughter] Stuck with it now, sport. You been much to good diners, lately?

Not much. Someone I know told me about one on the other side of town, but I haven't had a chance to visit it myself, yet.

I think I've got them all mapped out about now. You'll have to let me know about that one. I'll take you for eggs to my favorite; good coffee. Even better than the fancy shit Main keeps making in the kitchen.

Sure. It might be good for us to actually meet in person, and good coffee tends to make everything better.
