[The lack of static that is inevitably the office and the dead lack of noise that comes with it]

Checking in. It's the holidays. You're only a good asset as long as you're not half-dead.

You may have guessed this about me, but I'm not much of a partier. [A faint grunt as he sits down on the bed. He spent most of the afternoon tailing someone and he's fairly well beat.] Doing anything fun?

You strike me as the constant partier, buttercup. [A pause, the rhythmic click of keys at a computer] Oh yeah. We've got a definite party here in HQ. [Pause] Downtime, Corvus. Take some.

I don't need any. Not right now. [Difficult enough, juggling things between the door and work.] I'm done for the day anyway. All I have planned for tonight is sleep, honestly.

[Easily] Everyone needs downtime, sport. Or we start having problems. I'm putting the intel you picked up on that last run through to the liaison. Should have something to go on soon.

I guess I need a hobby. And good. I'm looking forward to having something fresh to start on. [...] Downtime. What do you do? I don't seem to very well these days with free time.

[A laugh] Anytime someone says they need a hobby, they're overdue. I read books, sport. I see my kids. [Neatly ignoring the request for work] What do you mean, you don't do very well with free time? [Cautious but oh so relaxed-sounding. He's read the damn file]

I help take care of my friends' son. That's what I spend most of my free time on, helping out here. You're probably right about being overdue for a hobby. [A pause.] I play guitar, but it's a little difficult to do that publicly when you're supposed to be keeping a low profile.

Ah. [Hadn't pictured Jack with kids, but there's a sort of sense to it.] When I need a hobby, I look one up. Even low profile ones. They've got books. On that sort of thing. [Thoughtful]

[Jack actually chuckles at that, if tiredly.] You really find your hobbies by reading books about finding hobbies? That doesn't seem like a great way to find a passion for something, but maybe it's just me.

[Pause] Do you need to be passionate about something to enjoy it, sport? I like diners, and art. [totally comfortable putting those two together] And theater. There's got to be something aside from guitar and your friend's kid that counts as downtime.

[Quietly.] I always have before. [Something's held back there, since it's not the sort of thing you lay on someone you only recently met.] Not recently, no. I don't think there is. I don't remember the last time I went to a movie. A few years ago, I think. With an old friend. [And the mention of her stings, so he goes quiet for a half-second.] Is that sort of thing really required to be a good asset?

[Simply] Yeah. It is. You don't spend enough time away from the job, you forget what it is to be one of them. And then you don't blend. You can't. And then you get dangerous. [It sounds like experience] We all need things to ground us, sport. So go see a movie with old friends and try out some of those books. Maybe you're not passionate about it. Maybe you learn to be.

[Quietly] Sometimes the only way we can do what we do is to sound, talk, look, feel like one of them. We fuck up, buttercup, but then we're dragged back. Same way people out there are.

[A laugh; brief but real] I know I'm right, sport. It's why I'm the voice in your ear.

I think I've got them all mapped out about now. You'll have to let me know about that one. I'll take you for eggs to my favorite; good coffee. Even better than the fancy shit Main keeps making in the kitchen.
