public.
[As, simply, Javert. In crisp, black ink.]

Quelle folie ce que c'est? Words, not my own, appearing on the page before me. The ramblings of a madman, my fellow inspecteurs would say, yet my eyes do not deceive me. A door, between two worlds, and a key to allow passage-- it defies all logic, all explanation, mais il est vrai.

[A pause, the pooling of ink.]

I find it unacceptable that my time is limited by a man who cares little for the law, though he claims to serve it.

Quel dommage. Are you not concerned with my pureness of character, monsieur? I was of the impression that these things mattered greatly to men of law and learning. But I know little of such things, and have only good and moral men to guide me along my way.

Criminals lack pureness of character, anonyme, and thus it is important to encourage such in society. Goodness and morality must always prevail over evil and immorality.

Must they? I am glad you are here to guide me in such things, Inspecteur Javert. Too often, the feeble and weak fall into immorality because they perceive no other way to eat or live in our world, and such evil must be rooted out, or we shall all become infecté.

Précisément. Those who live good, moral lives and follow the law will receive their reward, just as those who do not will suffer the consequences.

Better to starve than to tarnish one's soul, monsieur.

One is temporary. The other, eternal.

Do you have family to instill these values in, Inspecteur Javert?

[Pen press.] Non.

I hope you do not ever have a child go hungry, monsieur, for the sake of your scruples and your morals.

The good and lawful endure hardships, anonyme. They do not allow themselves to fall into immorality and criminal activity because of them.

You would allow your child to starve in order to save your own soul, monsieur?

I do not have a child. Nor will I Yet if I did, you imply that I would have no choice but to damn myself in order to save them from starvation. I find such assumptions troubling.

Non, monsieur, I am asking what you would do, if presented with the choice.

I would find a way to feed my child without resorting to the actions of a criminal.

If no one will offer you work, monsieur, what then?
