Walter & Javert are the law and the law ([info]isnotmocked) wrote in [info]doors,

public.
[As, simply, Javert. In crisp, black ink.]

Quelle folie ce que c'est? Words, not my own, appearing on the page before me. The ramblings of a madman, my fellow inspecteurs would say, yet my eyes do not deceive me. A door, between two worlds, and a key to allow passage-- it defies all logic, all explanation, mais il est vrai.

[A pause, the pooling of ink.]

I find it unacceptable that my time is limited by a man who cares little for the law, though he claims to serve it.

[Excitedly, with an extra flourish in her hand.]

Il est tout à fait fou, n'est-ce pas? But it is true, Monsieur Javert. I am sorry your companion is not agreeable to you. Perhaps you have been paired so that you might guide him, non?

En effet il est.. My perusal of this book has provided no answers as of yet, and I doubt further success. It is Inspecteur Javert, mademoiselle, and merci, though you have no need to apologize on behalf of a stranger. He is in dire need of guidance, this is true, yet he has been resistant to my presence thus far.

I am waiting for my Papa in the hopes that he might have some insight, but the days are passing and he has not yet arrived. Inspecteur Javert, it's nice to speak with you. I am sure your will is strong, Inspecteur. I have every confidence in you.

When was your Papa due to arrive? Or do you mean that he is like us, and has not yet been paired with another in the strange world beyond? And you as well, Mademoiselle Cosette.. Do I know that name Shoud I know [Pen press.] Thank you.

I am not sure. We have never been separated for more than a few hours, whilst he is running errands. Yet, I have not seen nor heard from him since arriving in Mademoiselle Charlotte's mind. I must confess, I am worried for him, Inspecteur. [...] You're welcome.

[A pause, as Javert attempts to figure out how to make their conversation private. After a few tries, he finally succeeds.]

Perhaps he will arrive yet. He was with a girl, as I recall Your Papa, what is his name?

[in flawless French, which I won't attempt because though I don't speak French except for a tiny bit, Leo definitely does]

One must wonder why we are paired with the ones that we are. My own time is limited by a general who seems insistent on becoming the ruler of his country, though by what means, I'm not entirely sure. I'm not even quite sure of his motive for becoming this leader, as he has yet to allow me to understand these motives.

You speak French, sir?

[I have high school French, the rest is Google Translate. XD]

Yes, good sir, one must indeed. Perhaps, as the girl above suggested, we are meant to guide them. As a man of the law my duty is to uphold and enforce it, and I cannot turn away from what I am bound to do regardless of the circumstances. If your general intends to seize control through unlawful means, then I am afraid that you must prevent him from doing so.

I do indeed. I reside in Paris, though I am fluent in English as well.

[High school French is still better than mine. I've got Spanish and decent Mandarin? LOL :D]

You reside in Paris? How exciting! I've visited there once before; it is quite a fantastic city. I'm from England myself, so I hope that my French is not so terrible for you. I'm not certain what his plans are; he doesn't like to share too much with everyone, I'm afraid, not even his own soldiers.

I do. I am Inspecteur Javert, Monsieur Roy. An unofficial introduction, I am afraid, but the best that can be done under the circumstances. [...] Yes, I suppose, though it could do with improvement. Unrest lurks beneath the surface, but in the end the law will prevail. I find no fault in your French. What is the current ruler of his country like?

It is a pleasure to meet you, Inspecteur, though I´m Leonard Drury. Roy is the one who I refer to, the General inside my head. Yes, it is quite an unofficial introduction, though I don´t imagine that we can do better. I´m on the Vegas side of things, unfortunately for us. Thank you, for the reassurance and the compliment of my French. It is always good to hear it from a native speaker of the language.

The current ruler is a strange man, very strange. He likes to plot almost as much as Roy does, I´m afraid. Roy could have taken charge at the end of their war, but he handed the reigns over to a more experienced General, knowing that the General favoured him, and hoping that when the General did eventually retire, the reigns would be handed nicely back to Roy.

What do you have to hide? 24601, could it be... I have returned to do as I have always done, anonyme. If you are a good, loyal citizen, then you have no need to fear me or the law.

Non, bien sûr que non. Would it not be improper, monsieur, for a une vraie dame to publicly speak with strangers she has not been formally introduced to? I would think propriety mattered very much to a man like yourself, non?

[Pause. Pen press.] Mais bien sûr. As you are so well-versed in propriety, tell me, must such formal introductions be made in person, or is one able to maintain propriety through the written word as well?

You, monsieur, have no need of introductions. As a man, neither your reputation nor your prosperity shall suffer from the impropriety.

A man of my standing must do all that he can do maintain propriety, for I am held to certain standards, both by myself and others, and I cannot allow myself to fall short of them. Yet I will amend my question. Are you able to maintain propriety by conducting introductions through the written word, or must they be done face to face?

I find remaining anonyme protects me while writing, as there is no nom to associate my impropriety with. In person, someone must introduce us who knows us both, monsieur, lest I be ruined. I know my morality is of the utmost concern for a man of the law, like yourself, Inspecteur Javert.

A criminal would lie without hesitation But would he be so bold, I wonder As you insist upon remaining anonymous, I cannot know if there is one who knows us both and can therefore be relied upon to introduce us. Thus, I fear we are at an impasse. [Pause.] Your morality is of the utmost concern for yourself, of course, is it not?

Quel dommage. Are you not concerned with my pureness of character, monsieur? I was of the impression that these things mattered greatly to men of law and learning. But I know little of such things, and have only good and moral men to guide me along my way.

Criminals lack pureness of character, anonyme, and thus it is important to encourage such in society. Goodness and morality must always prevail over evil and immorality.

Must they? I am glad you are here to guide me in such things, Inspecteur Javert. Too often, the feeble and weak fall into immorality because they perceive no other way to eat or live in our world, and such evil must be rooted out, or we shall all become infecté.
