[After the police came to take his statement, Neil slept. A couple hours, give or take, before he was awake again and promising the nurse that he wouldn't try to get out of bed. Again. It's quiet in the room, the doctors having come in and out a couple more times to check his vitals and make notes on charts that he doesn't particularly care about. Morphine dulls the pain, and there isn't much else to do but lie back, listen to the muffled sounds he can hear outside his door, and let his mind wander.]

I don't think I look half bad. [His gaze moves to the box, and after a few seconds of careful maneuvering (and deliberate attempts to keep from showing any pain) he manages to sit up.] No, it's not silly. Thanks. I always thought hospital food sucking was just a cliche but it's actually true. [He pauses, looks at him for a couple of seconds, and sighs.] I'm okay. Really, Louis. I'll be back on my feet in no time.

[It's hard for Louis to see him so frail, to watch him prop himself up so carefully, but he does, leaning in a little closer in case Neil needs the support. Watching him strain makes him think about broken sutures, and it's almost impossible for him to bite his tongue and wait. Somehow he manages it. Clearly, though, everything is not as still beneath the surface as it might seem. When Neil settles in again, he leans back a fraction.] No time. [Flat, but dry, with irony. He doesn't believe that for a second. Then:] You should take it as a testament to how many people care about you that most everyone I know wants to get Chloe alone in a dark alley.
