Showing off is what I do. [He clears his throat. Dramatic pause.]It's called "If I took you to the carnival" by Mister Eddie Nashton.

[And, then he reads it like Eddie would have five years ago. Full of love and tenderness.] If the dot equals a dash over your pale, flecked skin- then I am a mark left with a chalk line on my back at the state fair. [Inhale.] You tell me not to look, to watch the blues or the curve of your hip. You turn away when I tell you that dash, dot, mark is what leaves me spinning wheels and breaking milk bottles for sharp tickets that I wrap around your wrist. [Smile.] The lights flicker, I can taste cotton candy in your mouth. You trip on the way to the tilt-a-whirl. Colors blur and in velocity my fingers thread into yours.
