Ducks.
Who: Reizo, ???
What: Duck feedin'
Where: Park
When: Uhh, some time that isn't intrusive to anything going on.
Why: Because ducks.

It had been a nice day -- the sun had rambled up high into the sky and grinned down fierce enough to loosen neckties, cajole the fairer sex into shorts and skirts, cause a few daring individuals to break open the local fire hydrant, and send topsicle sales through the roof.  A few people grumbled over the heat, but the prevailing wind kept the teeth out of it and their complaints.
Reizo was something of a grumbler by nature, but he was smart enough to keep to the high ground where the winds could find him, or to the shade when available.  He’d been lucky enough to find a spot with both after poking around the park, and was now something of a regular.

Reizo sat on a bench, long arms slung over the back and head reclined, wriggling a topsicle stick between his teeth and staring up into the leaves of the tree he was sitting under.  Occasionally he’d lift a hand up towards the tree and turn it ‘round in the dappling shadow and peer hard at it, lips curled down in a frown.  Other times he’d take a call, flipping open his phone and rumbling short and sweet into it, but mostly he reclined on the bench, looking at the tree or his hand or the kid’s baseball game in the field behind him or at the pond.

The pond was small and well kept and across the stone walkway from the bench.  It glistened lazily in the sun, lapped gently at its shallow shores, and kept its fat, feathered inhabitants happy.  Ducks drifted on its surface, quacking sporadically, sending up small ripples that slid smoothly across the glossy top, distorting the reflections of the sun and tree.

Reizo hunched over, long legs jutting up into the air and hands dangling between them, watching the ducks swim and waddle just at the edge of the pond.  He reached to the brown bag at his side, bag crinkling as he reached inside, and produced a loaf of stale bread.  He broke off a piece, considered smushing it in his hand and doing his best to peg a duck with it, but settled on tossing it on the bank and watching the duck’s scrabble over to it and squabble with one another to get it.

She had sat down a bit primly, her hands crossed over her lap, but that felt too formal, or too tense, and Kozue hated being formal and tense. After Obon, she'd had enough to last her a good long while; she relaxed, leaned back, and dangled her feet. Her toes just grazed the grass. It was comfortable—at least until Reizo started looking at her so very obviously.

"I was at the movies," she replied, after a brief pause, "and it's really cold there. They pump the AC way too much." Still, she picked at the sweater's knot, and wondered if she should have brought a big bag to stuff it into. It'd make her look less silly, maybe? Then, eyes shooting briefly to the topsicle stick now lying on the ground, "The topsicle cart is around here somewhere?"

She turned, hearing a soft sound, and watched as Misaki... jumped? on the rocks, Kozue supposed, trying to figure out the action and failing utterly. Then again, it was Misaki. Her brow furrowed slightly, and she glanced at Reizo again, wondering if he was seeing it too. "If I didn't know better, I'd think Aoi-san was going after the bread, too."

Then again, there was all that troubling, creepy bird symbolism in Paradise, and her bird-Persona. Maybe your Persona screwed you up like that from time to time and made you have weird cravings. She'd have to ask Kiriko if she was having any foxlike moods.

Theme parks - waterparks, whatever - were not places Kou chose to spend time, so naturally he had declined all invites when people had asked him to attend. Slides were, of course, the devil. People went down them dressed in what he thought should pass for underwear.

He was a loner by nature. The thought of a park was better at bringing him outside; it was tranquil and with enough time to think, till the people who visited on a hot summer's day would come in the afternoon and remarkably make it more thought-provoking with their noise. It was because they were alive, he supposed, as if reminding himself they were part of the scenery and nothing else. That thought had served him well until he stopped. The walk by the pond was blocked. Looking ahead told him they were people he knew, which meant his hopes were dashed when he saw Reizo merely existing.

He stepped backward and realised he'd likely been seen, paused for a moment, and went over. He supposed it was best to lead by example and be polite.

"What are you doing?" he asked, as though it was his park. Fortunately with Reizo present that had remained silent.

Misaki finally made it to the other side, and moved a bit closer to the group. She put her feet in and splashed lightly at the water as she watched the ducks. Her eyes went over Kozue's outfit as she took off her hat and leaned back some in the shade, resting her body on her outstreched arms.

She glanced up when she saw Kou there and was suprised by his comment, "He's clearly feeding the ducks Oubai-san. Is there a problem with that?"

“Huh,” he replied, eyes lingering on the sweater for another moment before darting back to the pond. He handed her the chunk of bread he’d torn off from the dwindling loaf, gave her an expectant look as he slid the loaf out of his lap and in between them and slumped on the bench. Seemed he was happy to pass the weighty task of duck feeding to her.

Another half-shrug. “Probably somewhere in the park,” he said, helpful as ever. “I caught it at the gate, but it roams,” and you’d know all about that. Amusement flared for a brief moment at the thought, lips peeling back in a toothy grin, and then it died, curiosity taking over on his sun-dappled face at the mention of another classmate.

He turned to look at the girl, frowning as she danced across the rocks, then he gave a snort, a shake of his head, and went to say something that would no doubt be gut-busting, but instead he found himself staring hard at a stick of an upperclassman. A sneer curled the corner of his mouth, and he leaned closer to Kozue, whispering to her with a hiss that wasn’t much of a whisper at all.

“Careful, Kondo-chan, he’s been a little clingy to me lately and if he sees you sitting beside me he might claw your eyes out in jealousy.”

He fixed the boy with a hard look, eyes gone flinty, issuing out a silent warning.

Then he laughed up at the tree when Misaki spoke for him, laugh throaty and tinged with showy mockery. Definitely a laugh he’d practiced.

“Rabbit’s hit the mark,” he told Kou, looking hopeless at him, “and here I thought you were supposed to be the smart one.”

There would have been times when Kou would have apologised, walked away, or given this large boy some money, but the last would have been when he was a child and he wasn't one anymore. He had faith was strong enough to walk the path of a man that his father had laid out for him. Maybe his bravado would not roll over and capitulate this time.

"It's surprising," Kou replied. He gave Kondo-san a look, his eyes lingering briefly before returning to Reizo. "Deliquents normally throw rocks. I'm more surprised to see you here. Walking doesn't seem your sort of thing."

He looked at Kozue again, with disappointment; he had thought she possessed common sense. He had not replied to Misaki, making it clear that he was not talking, nor would he later for that matter.

Kozue picked up the chunk of bread, and wiggled it between her fingers, mind straying slightly from the location of the Topsicle Man—he'd come around sooner or later if she waited in one place, right?—to wonder about what Misaki was doing and if she was at all likely to trip and fall into the pond and maybe lose a contact lens, and…

Kozue chucked the piece of bread at the ducks with a throw that would have been surprisingly athletic if anyone present had forgotten that she played tennis, and spent an awful lot of time as sideline girl while the real players practiced. It landed in the pond with a splash, and then she heard what Reizo had said, and glanced up to see Kou. One of her eyebrows tipped slightly; "Oh, senpai, it's a surprise to see you here." And it was, too. Then again, they weren't exactly communicative about plans. Usually, Kozue didn't mind, as it afforded her the freedom to do as she pleased.

What was Shirai on about? Clingy? Something about that image was decidedly creepy—but when he scooted closer to her, it reminded Kozue of something. That, and the severe, challenging look that her classmate was leveling at her boyfriend. She chuckled slightly at the joke—not that funny, but it'd do—and watched Kou out of the corner of her eye.

Let him see if he could muster up clingy.

Misaki paused and looked between Kou and Reizo and she sighed, "You know Oubai-san, it's not nice to say such accusations of people when it's clear that they're not throwing anything more then bread."

She glanced at Reizo curiously, "Why would he want to cling to you Shirai-kun? I mean wouldn't that seem kind of, difficult to do? And sorry I don't think that Oubai-san has claws. Though I don't think you should be saying that in front of his girlfriend."

Reizo looked between his three teammates, head tilted in that canine manner he had, and the sun hung over them, hot and brutal. The wind hissed and still he sat silent, lips pursed into a hard frown; leaves danced and played in the summer eddies, and a few floated down onto the two on the bench. The huge boy had stretched mid-talk, and he was comfortable and relaxed on the bench, both arms hiked up to rest on the back of it, and technically around Kozue. His eyes darted in a circle to each face, then he broke out into a huge, wolfish grin and settled on his bench mate.

“Oh, Kondo-chan,” he began, voice full of pity and eyes glistening with amusement, “is it true?“ Then he shook his head, mouth agape with mock horror as he continued: “But I thought you liked guys?” He whirled to Kou without missing a beat, leaning forward on the bench, narrowing his eyes and poking a finger playfully in the air at him, full of faux-accusation, “and you. I thought you and I had something after that night at the park, or at least you and Ishinomori.”

Then he slumped back with another laugh, and the arm that’d been on the top of the bench slid off and around Kozue’s shoulders, and suddenly he seemed to grow possessive and to look at her for the first time; his stare smoldered and his gaze was hungry and as wolfish as the grin he was wearing as he leaned in closer to her, stopped, and then stared dead at Kou. There was blood in that look, and his grin grew sharper than a sickle moon.

“I don’t buy it,” he spat out, “She’s not full-blooded and she’s got a damned reputation.” He glanced at Kozue then, to see how she might react, then back at Kou and stabbed at him with the next line. “You just want an easy lay or to be able to brag about how you turned some sullied gaijin into a demure housewife.”

This had fallen out of her control very, very quickly, Kozue realized, as Shirai Reizo's arm descended around her shoulder. Very quickly, and she was scrambling mentally to catch up and grab ahold of the situation and make it hers again. Or at least get a few fingers worth of a grip before god-only-knew-what happened.

Which meant not freaking out or looking upset. It took her a moment to get over the brief wide-eyed, frightened look that had flashed over her face when Reizo looked at her with more actual interest than he'd ever shown her before. It wasn't all that difficult; there were witnesses here so murder was probably out, slightly less terrifying people looked at her like that all the time and she thought it was great, and 'a bad reputation', really, was hardly a new or surprising insult. She looked up at the taller boy (even here on the bench he positively loomed over her, and she had to crane her neck almost uncomfortably), and made herself look as un-threatened as possible. Her mouth was slightly open and her face askance in an expression calculated to be slightly superior, slightly dubious above all else; she mostly avoided looking at Kou, waiting for his reaction to—well, to Reizo's obvious goading, before she backed him or cut him down.

Her neck and her jaw did clench once, though—it was somewhere around the sullied gaijin and demure housewife comments, although it might have been difficult to tell which, exactly, had bothered her into a physical reaction. It might not have been easy to pick out visually, but Reizo'd have felt it. Which was annoying, but it could have been worse.

Oubai wanted an easy lay? If only. She couldn't help that one furtive glance towards her boyfriend at that one: she searched his face, eyes darting almost immediately away; could she really find an answer based on how he looked, after a pretty typical taunt from the team bully? Her attention was back on Reizo almost immediately, as she shifted her weight and was reminded that he was still holding onto her shoulders. (There was a mild case of deja vu here somewhere.)

"My reputation is hardly fresh news," she told Reizo, her chin now pointed up and her head tilted to the side, as if she was considering some complex problem (or she was like a small puppy that tipped its head at everything), her voice the tiniest bit saccharine and a bit superior (all in all she had decided she was just going to pretend to be Kiriko, since she did things like this so flawlessly and bravely), "But I never heard anything about a park. So, are you jealous of him, or jealous of me?"

Misaki stared at Reizo and his actions and she shook her head. Was he trying to taunt Kou, it seemed a silly thing for him to do, considering the fact that it would look bad to do anything to him here in public. Not only that but Kou's father having clout ment that some actions here would not simply be over looked. Reizo was probably up to something, he wouldn't be doing this if he didn't get some amusement from this. She was in his class, as was Kozue, and the only time Reizo paid attention that much to people was if someone was going to become entertainment for him.

Misaki sighed and laid back on the grass, looking up at the trio chucking some, "Why wouldn't he have reasons to be jealous of you Kozue-chan. I mean you are prettier then him, and do get more attention from the boys. Although I do think that the girls that gossip around might be a bit jealous of the idea of Shirai-san with his arm on you like that. One would seemingly think, if they didn't listen to what was being said here, and just saw this pleasent scene, that he was hot for you."

Kou stood quietly at the lakeside about to erupt, chin buried into his neck as though a scarf was there to provide him with sanctuary. The emotion bubbled on his face when he looked from Kozue to Reizo and the closeness between the two of them. His neckline stood out all stiff and with its muscles taut.

Reizo's remark had been somewhat lost on Kou - the bane of his school, with those wolfish teeth and pressing stare. Perhaps the respect he gave Reizo for his capacity for violence was misplaced, or maybe he had just gotten the taller boy wrong. His gaze lingered and now he thought about it, that faith was obviously misplaced, since Reizo-crap quite obviously did not understand his lack of fascination with the fairer sex, and the participation in it.

His thoughts broke then and he stared at Kozue, eyes moving to the left and wandering over Reizo to where Misaki was. Nobody here understood him at all, and his neck buried itself a little deeper before he shook his head and wished everyone would disappear from beside him. Expecting them to help themselves by not making exhibitions of their appearance - it was not doing him good to motivate himself with concern, except he would not be willing to let himself be hated if it was anything but.

"What exactly is your problem with whatever's going on between the two of us? Your jealousy is understandable in itself, but you're acting as though I'm bothered by it. Between the three of us, I must be the only one who trusts Kondo-san at all."

He gave Reizo as hard a look as he had given. "Why you care about our relationship is confusing. It's not like you understand the basis of it. Haven't you got anything better to do?"

Reizo’s grin stayed, sharp and cruel as a blade, but his eyes moved, flickering from Kou to Misaki and spearing the girl with the full front of his scorn, eyes wide and brimming with feral hatred and warning, and his teeth looked suddenly sharp in his wicked grin. The hand on Kozue’s narrow shoulder tightened, silk going to steel. His glare slipped from the pink-haired girl and he glanced at the one he’d shored up against him with an arm, looking closer to shamed than apologetic, grip relaxing.

Another sweeping glance around to the three before he offered them a shrug of his broad shoulders. His grin faded and he managed to look halfway thoughtful as his eyes crawled over Kozue. The way she tried to cut back at him -- that was what she was doing, right? -- was great(if a little familiar), definitely a step in the right direction, and he decided that he liked her a bit more because of it.

“Well,” he started, grin snapping back into place, the bloodcurdling qualities usurped by lazy affability, “I met your .. Uh.. boyfriend at a different park awhile back. Made a pass at me and I was almost sure he asked Toru out when he gave him that gift..” He frowned, puzzled, like he actually believed it. He flicked a few crumbs he’d missed off his lap and, after double-checking for any remaining ones, looked back to Kou.

He squinted at the dark-haired boy, and it wasn’t clear if it was because of the sun or if he was just trying to figure him out. It was the latter, of course. It was always the latter with Kou. Good grades didn’t come bundled with good graces, or even the sense to follow goddamned arguments. He felt the urge to rise up and deck the boy when he recalled all the barely-coherent digs or explanations he‘d had to dig though, but it was hot, and the breeze and shade felt good.

“I’m just lookin’ out for a comrade,” he said, answering them all at once, “like the rules told us to, remember? And anybody who knows the slightest thing about you could see what this is about.” He was starting to sound exasperated. “Talkin’ about trust. All I said was she had a reputation, and that it couldn’t sit well with someone like you.”

He pinched another piece of bread off the loaf (wherever it was by now) and tossed it down to the calming ducks, and then sneered up at Kou. “Only thing I got to do right now is feed the animals and talk to the people who came and interrupted me.”

If Reizo was expecting some sort of fear to her face because of his glance, Misaki wasn't about to give it to him. He was scary, paradise was worse. She simply blinked at his warning, acknowleging it, but then smiled sweetly. She could tell where this was going, and looked at Kozue chan in wonder.

Misaki watched the bit of bread fly over in the water and quipped "So what does that make you Shirai-san? Are you trying to prove something here in a way? Are we the ducks and you're the master that throws us a bit of food to squabble over?"

Misaki glanced over at Kou and muttered, "You know this isn't the truth. You know very well that there are other people who trust Kozue-chan, and think decently about her." then even more quietly, "and Shirai's not the one to watch out for."

Kozue winced as Reizo's fingers dug into her shoulder, going right to the bone of her shoulderblade and feeling, for a moment, as though they were going to leave distinct bruises. But it was an exaggeration—maybe if he hadn't let up as quickly as he had. Her shoulder still ached, though, and she resisted the temptation to rub at it.

And Misaki had provided a good distraction from the lingering pain: "Wh--huh." It was a good distraction in terms of horrible confusion, as Kozue tried to figure out where Misaki had gotten that idea about the ducks. Reizo certainly wasn't throwing her bread, unless he thought inviting her to sit next to him...? But her social standing could hardly have been helped by that (she was great as was), so it really wasn't throwing her anything. "Thanks, Aoi-san, for the vote of confidence," she said, a bit dryly, looking over at Kou—waiting for his take on that. At least it hadn't been a whole speech on the topic of Kozue's inherent purity and goodness.

Speaking of things to throw. She reached down and twisted off another chunk of bread from the half-a-loaf that remained, and threw it, underhand, into the pond. Was Kou going to stand there all day trading insults with Reizo, or… Maybe it was a manly thing.

She'd have been more bothered by Reizo's suggestions if she were of a mind to believe that Kou would ever compromise his stiff traditional ideals enough to be attracted to a boy. He wouldn't even confess attraction to her, and she was gor…

No way.

No fucking way. Color started to drain slowly from Kozue's cheeks, leaving behind a pale face spotted with a few freckles and a dash of the sun she'd caught thus far in the day. He'd never mentioned finding her attractive. He'd never made a move. It couldn't be. She glanced over at Reizo again, slowly, lowering the bread, giving in to the need to know more, despite her best judgment. "At another park? Oh?"

Kouchisei did not understand people's fascination in chucking stale bread at ducks and geese and waterfoul, and had spent a long period of time during Kozue's period of melodrama - because it was not self-reflection - contemplating the meaning of their relationship. Melodrama did not lead you into the arms of other people, for a start. How could she be as close to him as that? The muscles in his face seemed to slacken, and then he thought about what his father had taught him about it, and folded his arms. Father was right in that sacrifices had to be made - that people could not have everything they wanted.

"What do you mean, know anything about me?"

Gay? He was more stunned than angered by that comment, and how Reizo could think of something that was so obviously obscene and wrong that he would not bother to combat it. He, at least unlike that lurking wolfish deviant, was secure in his sexuality and that it was the right way to be.

Ridiculous.

Another flutter of wings as the ducks took towards the bread-- they’d almost gone idle, but two new hunks was enough to send the greedy, pudgy birds into a screeching frenzy. Reizo shifted in his seat and drew up into full height, looming tall even in the low-slung bench as he looked around. The view was too good to be spoiled by poor company: they sat abreast a lump of a hill, overlooking the duck pond and the field behind it where a group of children had taken to flying vibrant kites. They soared and snapped in the breeze, and their excited shouts carried all the way to the bench. They all looked delighted.

A far cry from the upperclassman who was standing away from the bench and staring. Reizo’s hand fell from Kozue’s shoulder and instead he hooked her around the waist. If it was meant to provoke Kou it wasn’t obvious -- Reizo was still watching the ducks, who’d taken their fight to the edge of the briefly serene pool, splashing in the water, beaks jabbing to try and steal bits of bread. His fingers moved and flexed against the slim girl’s side for a comfortable grip before he settled back in against her.

“A park, yes,” he said, looking back down at Kozue, ugly scar twisting one corner of his mouth up into an uncontrollable smirk, “Not much of a park.. It was more of an abandoned playground, but the two of ’em came walking up to me and got to shooting the breeze before Oubai-kun got all bashful and gave Ishinomori-kun a present. Box of chocolates, I think?” He looked at Kou for confirmation, but went on before he could say anything, “so I tried to help them out. Next thing I know Oubai’s got me in a big hug and is trying to whisper into my ear before I can shove him off.”

He leaned down closer to Kozue, head tilted and lips near enough to her ear that she could feel his breath feathering over it as he whispered. “Does he ever get close and whisper into your ear?”

He stared at Kou out of the corner of his eye the entire time.

So much rage! Clenched fists and stares, muscles and deep breaths, all of which had a place on his face in such unconstraned levels of anger and emotion that he could never believe the outbursts at his house - or anywhere else, for that matter - were inappropriate or wrong.

He looked at Kozue from the corner of his eye. She was sitting there, taking it... enjoying it, even. He looked at her to be sure, and had it miserably confirmed she was not trying to push Reizo off and get away.

He glanced at the white-haired delinquent [because a name implied a level of respect and formality] and went over to Kozue before anybody could say anything. It was strange trying to walk with his mind immersed in confusion, and how she seemed to get further away before he could do anything. He went as close as he thought she was, arm outstretched and hand open so that she could grab it and accept his help if she chose.

"We should go walk for a while. It's a nice day. Seems a waste, otherwise."

To be fair, Kozue didn't look like she was enjoying anything very much, not after Reizo's comment about Kou and Toru and—and—and— her face was slowly getting color back, but she looked distant. Her eyes were off somewhere over the pond; her brow was slightly creased. Her mind was churning, enough that she barely registered the hand settling on her hip until Reizo was talking again. It was impossible not to hear or listen to him, how close he was. His breath was warm on her ear. For any other girl, it might have been frightening, uncomfortable—for Kozue it was infuriating because, damn it, Reizo was right. This was closer than Kou had ever been to her and she'd been dating him pretty much since her birthday. Giant white-haired thugs could actually get into her personal space faster, and with more success, than her boyfriend?

She glanced up at Kou's hand, and it took a moment for her eyes to rise all the way up to his face. "Alright," she said, carefully, still quite aware of the arm wrapped around her. At least he looked furious... but was he furious about Reizo's sudden touchy feely turnaround, or because Reizo had revealed something he'd rather have kept a secret. "I guess you don't have any chocolates for me?"

Because he was—she fought down the urge to believe Reizo, but it was an unsuppressable motion in her stomach, sick and furious at once. She made to stand up, if her classmate would let her go without leaving any more bruises, and went to take Oubai's hand. Yes, they could walk. And talk.

"But I'd like that. We have a lot to talk about," she added, finally looking Kou directly in the eye.

Misaki just sat there taking in the banter. Kou, gay? Not likely. Or if it was there was surely more behind it then him liking Toru-kun. She didn't think that was possible, then again, Toru did seem like Kou's type. She shook her head some, no that couldn't be right. This was all Reizo wanting to get on Kou's bad side to irk him or something. A usual attack from Reizo. Nothing of a shock here, really.

She nodded to Kozue appricatively and rolled her eyes, wanting to suggest that she and Kozue move off for a while while Reizo and Kou got into whatever cock fight they wanted to. However that was sided when Kou offered to take a walk with Kozue. She looked between the two, wondering just how much damage Reizo was doing. Kou certainly didn't look happy, considering the clenching fists that he was making.

She glanced over at Reizo and raised her eyebrows curiously at him as if asking 'Just exactly what are you trying to do here?'

“Aw, you guys leaving already?” He asked, peering up at Kozue, frown disrupted by the vicious scar carved into the side of his face. Even without it wrecking it, constantly tugging the corner upwards, it was doubtful it would have looked sincere. He hunched forward long enough to dig into his back pocket and find a cigarette, and glanced away long enough to light it.

Then he was grinning around it, cigarette pinched between his teeth and smoke looping up into branches of the tree. “You kids have fun, though, huh?”

Then he leaned back onto the bench and started feeding the ducks the rest of the bread, smoked his cigarette, and pondered the mess he’d just created. He really hoped it would be a good one.

Misaki sniffed the air and sighed some. "Shirai-san, could you please put that out? The ash is going to get into the bread, and then the ducks won't eat it, and you'll have wet bread just floating in the water. Which would be kind of gross."

She kept her eyes forward for the moment, figuring that she'd just have to watch what happened. There was really nothing that she could honestly do. If they fell into a trap that Reizo had set, well then that was only their faults for not seeing it. There was no way, in her mind, that Kou would come on to Reizo, or Toru for that matter.

In all the dungeons they had been in, Kou had never once shown the slights bit of interest in Reizo, and besides that point, Reizo always acted like he was an annoyence. So in her mind, this whole thing felt like some sort of act. Reizo was probably just trying to get at Kou for some dumb petty reason, and that was fine with her. After the way Kou had acted, disinviting her even after she said she was dying her hair for his dumb party, well if he screwed up with Kozue, then he deserved all the shit he got.

She laid back in the grass, hands behind her head. It was a nice day.
