"Barring another incident like the one back at that place, I'm not really sure that's a skill I'll ever need." Maeko said, shrugging. She had noticed the oddness but was trying to ignore it.

"Sure! It's as good a direction as any." She nodded and started to wobble in that direction before turning back.

"Wait, you didn't attend Nanakamado in elementary school? I assumed you had since you live locally."

"Well, you can never be sure. If Kozue does become a shadow, it might be needed." Assuming you're wearing anything at all. Kanaye shook his head and shrugged. "I'll help if you want me to!"

Kanaye shook his head and walked up to Maeko. "Uh, no. I started in, uh, middle school. So..." He laughed sheepishly.

"I suppose I could try in that case. But I'm not sure how well it'd go." She smiled. "Okay, I'll try!"

"Really? I don't think I ever saw you around before high school so I didn't know." She thought. "Did you go somewhere else?"

"Alright!" Kanaye smiled. "I'll make it so you don't fall down and break anything."

"Yeah. I was home schooled. Dad wanted to groom me into a successor." Kanaye laughed bitterly. "You can see how well that turned out, eh?" He shook his head. "Nevermind. Let's go...over there!" He pointed again.

"I guess I'll have to count on you for that, then." Maeko said, sounding only sluightly reluctant about having to rely on someone. It wasn't like walking in heels was a vital skill or anything. So it shouldn't count as weakness.

"Ah, why did you-" she stopped talking mid-question, remembering what Kanaye had said about starting to visit graves in middle school. After a moment's hesitation she wrote it off as coincidence and, because leaving a question unfinished just made everything awkward, continued. "Why did you end up at Nanakamado?"

"I'm glad to help, Maeko-chan. I know you don't like me to spend money on you, so I'm trying to help in the few ways that I can!" Kanaye nodded, excited.

"Oh. Um. Uh." Kanaye went silent. "...I, just, uh, got, uh. Tired. Of, um. Having no one to talk to. So, I wanted to go where there was lots of people." He winced. Even in his head that sounded stupid.

"Well then, thank you!"

So an unfinished question would maybe have been less awkward than this. Especially combined with the sinking feeling that she'd been correct. Maeko paused for a second, trying to choose between more silence and an awkward, forced change of subject.

"If it's something you want to talk about then I'll listen. You've already seen me at my weakest so..." She trailed off, not quite sue were that reasoning was meant to be leading. "But if it's not we can talk about something else."

"...Daichi-sensei was my tutor. And when he died, I didn't want anyone else. So..." Kanaye looked at the ground. "He was the only one I talked to. And..."

Kanaye's voice petered out at this point. He shook his head. "Nevermind. Let's go have some fun, right, Maeko-chan?" Kanaye said, his voice pained by his face smiling.

After a second's hesitation (it was hadly acceptable any more) Maeko brushed her fingertips against the back of Kanaye's hand, briefly enough that she could insist it was an accident if she needed to.

"That sounds nice, yes." She said after a few seconds with mostly forced calmness, with a smile to match.

"My father kept trying to get me put into a school for the disabled when I was in elementary school." She said, changing the subject.

Kanaye felt the touch and smiled at Maeko. "...Thanks, Maeko-chan. But..."

Shaking his head, he nodded. "Yeah. It'll get my mind off things..."

Intrigued and a little worried, Kanaye asked Maeko "Why? I mean, were you deaf as well when you were younger or something?"

"...sorry." Maeko said, shaking her head. It wasn't acceptable any more after all.

"I was supposed to be but no, not really. That's why he never managed to get me enrolled there." She laughed. "He was just really, really stubborn about me not being around people who would speak to me."

"It's not a problem!" Kanaye nearly shouted. "I was just...not expecting it. Don't feel like it was a bad thing to do." He smiled. "I think I needed that."

"Oh. Well, that's stupid. I mean, I get that he might be annoyed he can't hear but that doesn't mean he has to push it on you." He smiled. "That would've mean I never met you. And you never would have come to Nanakamado, so..." He had no idea where he was going with this. "Nevermind." Kanaye finished lamely.

Okay, so maybe it was acceptable. Acceptable and loud. "I didn't know what else I could..." She trailed off, apparently deciding the sentence was complete with just that. She wondered silently if it was the same person that Kanaye had mentionned before when they'd spoken about what she thought she'd done to Misaki. It was, however, probably best to save questions like that for never

"It's not really like that. His logic's not particularly sound but he was trying to protect me the whole time." Maeko said. After some thought she finally returned both the smile and the incredibly cheesy sentiment. "I'm glad I met you, though!"

"No worries, just listening is enough!"

"I guess so, but there's a saying in English." Kanaye attempted to speak it correctly and failed. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Realizing his company doesn't understand said language, he laughed sheepishly. "It means that it's still a bad thing, even if it was for good intentions."

Kanaye stopped in his tracks. Did she really just say that? His smiled widened and he laughed, skipping after Maeko. "Thanks, Maeko-chan! That's great! It means a lot!"

"Ah, okay...." Maeko wasn't entirely sure about that. But this really was one of those situations where even she had to admit to herself that no matter how hard she tried there wasn't a great deal she could do.

With her excellent grasp of english, Maeko totally managed to work out that was 'to visit the basement be nice'. Which didn't make a great deal of sense but that wasn't really unusual for Kanaye. "You're probably right but..." She shook her head.

She wasn't quite sure such a simple response should really cause a reaction like that but smiled anyway. "I'm glad you're happy, I guess!"

"Well, he is your father. Lots of people are attached to their parents, so I can't blame you." He shrugged. "But, still..."

Laughing, Kanaye looked around. "You wanna play a game or something?"

She nodded. "That sounds nice. Do you have a favourite game?"

"That's kind of selfish, though. To want you to be deaf with him to share the pain or something..." Kanaye shook his head. "Well, if you were, I'd learn sign language! I mean, I like languages, so with some hard work I could probably get enough to talk to you in a couple of months!"

"Not really, no. I'm just going where you'll go!"

"It's...it's not really like that. Not sharing pain. It's more like there's a whole world of sound that exists for me and that he has no way of protecting me from and so he just tried to keep me away from it instead. I guess it'd be like if one of the club members lost thier persona and had to know we were fighting with no way at all to help. It's not really something I can resent him for."

She smiled, trying to figure out how to respond to that. It was a pretty weird thing to say but actually also kind of sweet. "You'd...thanks, I guess. I'm glad I'd still be able to talk to you."

"Huh. The fish game, then!"

"...I guess that's better." Kanaye said, sulkily. "But...still. That's kind of overprotective, right? I mean, you had to do that grave cleaning by yourself when you were little, right? It's just confusing."

"Once again, Maeko-chan, I'm glad to help! I certainly wouldn't want to leave you unable to communicate with lots of people, so..." He shrugged. "I guess I just like learning languages. More people to talk to!"

"Alright! Do you know where it is?"

"Yeah, he got weird once I started talking." Maeko said, shrugging. "I do the grave cleaning for my mother, he just tells me to stay here during Obon while he returns home. He doesn't want me to speak to his family."

"...not really, I just assumed there'd be one. It's the only festival game I really know too well."

"Well that's not very nice." Kanaye winced and looked somewhat irritated. "Why? I mean, I guess you've never met them but I can't imagine they don't want to see you. At the very least they'd be nice for a visit..."

"Well, let's go find it, then!" Resisting the urge to grab her hand and run, Kanaye simply started walking, looking around, trying to find the fish game.

Maeko shrugged, suddenly uncharacteristically flippant. "I don't really want to see them, honestly. They're jerks."

"I'm sure there'll be one, it seems like a normal thing for there to be at a festival." Maeko said, nodding to herself and following.

"Oh?" Kanaye was curious. "I guess it's a good thing, then, that you never see them. Did they do anything to you? You're alright, right?!" Kanaye was, once again, panicking.

"Of course. Why wouldn't there be?" Kanaye laughed. He managed to find out, so he pointed. "Over there, Maeko-chan!"

"Huh? They didn't do anything to me, I never met them. I'm not sure they know I exist." She paused, shaking her head. "They kicked my father out as soon as they could get away with it. I think he was younger than I am now at the time. His disability was an embarassment."

"Ah, yay!" Maeko started to run toward the stall, wobbled, and settled for walking.
