"Okay..." Maeko kind of thought this was the kind of thing that was better not brought up somewhere so crowded. Still, it had been her idea.

In an uncharacteristic display of thoughtfulness, she pressed a hand on top of Kanaye's, just in case she was right. Of course, the motion probably only cemented the gravity of what she was asking.

"Way back. When we were talking at Kigakiga. ...was he the same person?"

Kanaye was confused about why she was putting her hand on him. Briefly, he thought if the question was "will you take me back"? He wondered why. he shouldn't expect her to change that much, after all, especially so quickly. Maybe she just really likes cats? Kanaye had no idea.

...Oh. Oh dear. Kanaye sighed. He should have been expecting that, but...

"Yes." Kanaye sighed again. "It was him. It was me..." Kanaye sniffled a bit. "I did it, ok? And it wasn't like Misaki, I actually did it! He..." Kanaye held his head in his hands.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked, but..." She fidgetted.

"It's- You don't have to." She sighed, paused, tried to accept that really, there was nothing she could do to fix this sitution.

And then, despite being convinced that this was totally unacceptable, she placed the cat toy down and gingerly wrapped her arms around Kanaye and leaned against his back in an awkward sideways-hug-thing.

"It's-" She tried again. Words were still not cooperating. She squeezed instead.

	Kanaye just leaned into Maeko and stopped crying, thought it was clear he was about to bawl any minute now. "No, just...hold me..." Kanaye knew he sounded pathetic but that's never stopped him before. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Maeko did, rearranging herself to make the whole thing less uncomfortable, the original hug hadn't been something she expected to hold for more than a few seconds. Not entirely sure what to do here, (this was unacceptable. but letting go and leaving would be unkind.) she held still and waited for Kanaye to react again. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Sen-" Maeko cut herself off, having to put effort into referring to her ex-boyfriend by given name. "-Kanaye-san."

It sounded awkward and forced and lacked any of the impact she thought should be associated with using given names. Maybe she should have used a different honouriffic.

Too late now, and she continued speaking to Kanaye's back.

"It's not your fault. If saying something was all you did you're no more guilty of anything than I am."

...Did she just call him by his first name? Sure, the "-san" was a bit formal but it was still a giant leap. It definitely made him feel slightly better. He still felt like crap, but...

He turned around and sighed. "I guess so, but he actually DIED this time, Maeko-chan! Not some stupid lie. It was the truth!" Kanaye smiled. "I thank you for being here, though. It means a lot of me, Maeko-chan."

"I- it's probably hard. I'm sure it's hard. I wouldn't really know but."

She had no idea how to word this.

"It's...if he hadn't died then all it would have been was that you said something stupid that you didn't mean, right? Just because he did...doesn't mean you did anything more. It makes it harder but it doesn't make it your fault. I don't mean to make light of it but..."

She trailed off, once again clutching the cat as she spoke.

	Okay. It was okay. It was helping. Or something. And that made it acceptable. Maeko put one arm around Kanaye, the other still being used to hold the cat. "I know it's a stupid question but..."
