	Maeko finally caught up (would anyone even notice if she wore normal sandals with the yukata?) and paid for her own shots, taking one of the pellet guns and trying to imagine the target at the other side of the stall as a zombie. 	It was a nice gesture. And it was a cute cat. And it was pity and consolation and being given something because she wasn't good enough to get it herself. "I don't need your pity." Kanaye sighed. "Maeko-chan, it's not pity. I don't need it. I don't want it. I'm asking if you want it. I get that you want to be strong but if you try to do everything by yourself you'll burn yourself out."

Honestly. This was the one thing about Maeko he disliked. She was stupid about things like this. "You're a master at hard work. I'm sure if you had time to practice, you could do anything you want. I just want to do something nice for you. Please?"

Apologising was hardly new territory for Maeko. Calm, soulless apologies whenever she struggled with something or did somthing wrong were the norm. Apologising through anger and meaning and letting it displace what dignity she liked to think she had? That was new, and it had only been Tom who provoked it before and even that was belated by a few months.

So while the mumbled 'Sorry' was only different in tone from any other, it sounded irritated and unwilling and not entirely sincere, or by the way averted her gaze and tugged uncomfortably at her yukata sleeve and tapped the front of her left geta against the ground a few times it was a world of difference between them.

And she continued sulking for a few awkward seconds. More because she could than anything else. She didn't get to sulk at people normally. It was nice.

"I-I could have won it myself eventually." She said after a few seconds.

	Kanaye nodded. "I'm sure you could, Maeko-chan." He smiled. "I'm not doubting you in the slightest. You're the strongest person I know, really. You don't let anything get you down for long." 	It was somewhat more difficult to maintain the sulking while holding a toy cat. There was something inherently rediculous and childish about the whole thing. Maeko's attempt was nonetheless admirable. "Sorry. Thank you. It's really cute." She finally said, clutching the cat tighter. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Another pause to accomidate the sudden need for disoriented, flustered what. And for trying to work out whether to remain silent or to try to express the flustered-ness. Would the former discourage or encourage him? And, on that note, which of those outcomes was preferable?

In the end, she did what she always did and just ignored it. "It's okay. I don't think there's really anything I can win at, so it's okay."

Kanaye sat down behind her. "That was my second guess but I still wouldn't put it pass Misaki. Well, third, but I talked to Kiriko and Kozue and they think it's Gendou too, so..." He shrugged. "Dunno why he would want to spread something like that, and NOW of all times. I mean, saying he slept with someone like you might be a good thing but admitting to corruption..."
