it's my party and i'll cry if i want to...
Who: Kozue and the adoring public You
What: Festivities
Where: Bar Kidnap
When: July 21
Why: Because of presents and alcohol.

True to her word, Kozue had established herself in the VIP area of Bar Kidnap—still pretending to be blissfully unaware of the frightening or ominous implications of the name. She hadn't gone to much (or any) trouble to prove that this was a birthday party, however; she was dressed up, in an outfit a bit scantier than her normal going-out attire. She was sporting a green, sequin-covered minidress and a pair of heels of a ridiculous height. And her hair was even more carefully arranged than normal.

The VIP area was situated on a balcony, overlooking the rest of the club; from there, Kozue was engaged in chatting amicably with one of the older girls from the tennis club, but her attention kept drifting to the entrance downstairs. More people should show up. There weren't nearly enough for the party to be genuinely successful. So, every few moments, she cast a nervous glance downstairs.

The club itself wasn't all that packed; it was a weeknight, after all, and if any of the actual grown-up patrons noticed the steady stream of highschoolers, they weren't making a fuss. And the bouncers had either been bribed very efficiently, or were under instructions not to care, either.

Kanaye blinked. "What the hell is his problem?" he asked, trying to drink from his empty bottle. Upon noticing it was empty, he glared at it. He glared at it so hard he almost missed Tom's words.

Almost. He attempted to whirl as calmly as possible, resulting in him turning rather quickly but comfortably. "What the hell is he talking about?" he asked, trying to keep his voice even.

Oh. She'd said something like that, hadn't she? Before, in her desire to win an arguement. Maybe antagonizing Tom was not such a good idea after all.

She watched Tom leave, almost in disbelief, not sure whether she should yell at him to shut up.

"...sorry." She said quietly, not even trying to deny it. For all her faults, she strongly believed in taking responsibility for her own actions. "...the second part wasn't true! I never said that part. I'm not going to go if you don't want me to."

Kanaye blinked, nodded, and turned around. "I see why you were so uncomfortable with me then. Bye, Maeko-san. Hope you have fun with the next lucky guy that decides to date you." he said, walking away slowly.

Misaki had been wandering around after trying to slip away from Kozue just for the moment. She paused when she saw Kanaye and Maeko. Though she could see he was already drinking, not something she felt happy with, she knew she had to put in good with Kanaye at least to get along with him for Maeko.

Walking over she cheerfully waved and then saw him walking off. Heading over near Maeko-chan she paused and put her hand on Maeko's arm, "Hey...Maeko-chan...What just happened?"

"Sorry, Misa-chan. I'll just be a few seconds." Maeko said, pulling away and walking after Kanaye.

"...senpai." Maeko said weakly. "I really am sorry. I honestly do..." She paused, having no idea how to word this. 'Love' wasn't even close. 'Like was too vague and went without saying. "If you really don't want me around then... but I want to be able to help you. So you don't have to be on your own. Even if it's not like this."

Kanaye turned around matter-of-factly. "I know you do, but will you honestly be happy? Can you honestly say that you enjoy my company? I'm a god damned alcoholic, nothing good ever happens to me, and I'm a complete idiot. Quite frankly," he said, "I can't blame you. I don't even like me much either. I just want you to be happy, and if you aren't happy with me, then I'm fine. I'll just let whoever you actually love have you. It's best for the both of us."

Kanaye's voice was devoid of all emotion. "It's not like this is the first time it happened. I'm fine with it. You get used to it." He turned to leave, but tripped over his own foot and fell to the ground. He stayed there.

It was enough of a shock to see Kanaye speaking so plainly that for a few seconds Maeko had no idea what to do. Her uncertainty was probably not helped by the fact that this didn't happen! If you smiled and nodded and did what you were told properly then things like this never happenned. She briefly came to the conclusion that maybe she should have gone along with it before. Either way, it was too late now.

"You really are an idiot." She snapped, crouching next to Kanaye. "Of course I was happy with you." During the few minutes (had it even been that?) when she'd actually been honest, yes. But she'd decided that that counted even if she hadn't made the connection. She offered a hand, frowning. "Stand up, at least. Someone'll trip over you."

Misaki watched quietly. She wasn't sure if Maeko wanted her there or not...figuring it was better to just let them be she turned to try to find Keiichi or anyone that she knew and wandered off from the couple. A part of her was happy that Maeko was trying to go after him and another part was slightly hurt that she didn't yell at him for making a fool of himself.

She glanced over her shoulder to see if Maeko needed her at all, or if she wanted her to leave.

Kanaye responded without even moving. "I AM an idiot. I thought this was obvious." He said sadly. "You don't really mean that. You're just saying that because I told you my life story and you think you need to pity me. I don't need your pity." Kanaye tried to sound angry, but he really just sounded more depressed.

Kanaye ignored Maeko's hand and instead got up by himself. At least, he tried to. He stood up, but then fell again. At least he managed to catch himself this time, resulting in him on his knees.

"So what do you expect me to do?" Maeko said, starting to sound irritated. It was okay to be irritated now, right? Now that they technically weren't dating anymore. "I can't just forget it and ignore a problem. Especially not if it's something I can fix so easily."

Which was technically true, if oversimplifying everything.

Kanaye blinked. "I expect you to turn away coldly, find a new boyfriend, and make out with him in front of me. That seems to be how everyone else does it, but you don't seem the type. Maybe just show how ~happy~ you are single? That seems like something you might do."

He stood up and shrugged. "Or, you can keep telling me that you love me and that you were stupid and didn't mean it. Knowing me, I'll give in, and then you can live in more hell. One of the two."

Hearing this was making Misaki twich more. Just who did he think he was saying such cruel thing to her best friend. What arrogence and right...Maeko was trying damn hard to make this work and he was acting like some petulant child. She scowled deeply and drank the drink she had to keep her self from going over and spilling it in his face and calling him an ass.

Maeko stood up, thought for a few seconds and sighed.

"I love you. I was stupid and I didn't mean it."

Kanaye turned, eyes wide. "I...didn't mean that as a suggestion..." he said, voice low. "...But..."

Kanaye walked over to Maeko and hugged her. "...Thank you..." he whispered.

And then he noticed Misaki. He waved while still hugging Maeko. "Hello, Misaki!" he called. He would have yelled, but his voice still hadn't returned to normal.

Misaki smiled sweetly, "Oh hello. I'm sorry I was just looking for Keiichi, I guess I bothered you two huh? I'll be on my way okay...See you later Maeko."

She didn't want to be around hearing the rest of this. A part of her was just...it felt weird hearing Maeko say she loved anyone. She never even said it to her, her best friend...what was so great about Kanaye that he got those words?

"Sorry, Misa-chan. I havn't seen him..." Maeko said, shaking her head.

So, situation rectified and no real lessons learned on her part, she returned the hug.

Kanaye looked downcast. "I...I know you might not be comfortable with this, but..." Kanaye leaned in for another kiss.

That's when the drink in Misaki's hand suddenly went flying on Kanaye and Misaki said in a dry voice, "Oh...sorry Sempai. Must have slipped."

Kanaye whirled on Misaki, rage in his eyes. And then, he appeared to calm down. To anyone that didn't know him well enough, at least, which was most people. Those people that could read him would have noticed his eyes were still murderous.

"Don't worry, Misaki-san. I'm sure it was just an accident, right? I mean, it's not like you to try to ruin me, after all. You're far too nice for that."

Kanaye gripped his hands into a fist over and over.

"Of course not Sempai, you're doing a fine job of that on your own. Why would I want to add to that?" She smiled in a sweet way but clearly there was an aura of something radiating off her. Anyone that was just glancing at Misaki would have thought she was just being silly, anyone that knew her though would tell that she was just as serious as Kanaye was at the moment.

Maeko let go of Kanaye when he spun around. She could read the situation better than she would have liked to and so, apparently quickly learning from Toshimi, decided to ignore it.

"If you want to talk, I'm going to go get a drink." She said, smiling politely and bowing. "I shouldn't be that long."

And with that she dashed off down the stairs. Not so fast it could count as running but fast enough to make it seem like she was really, really enthuseastic about getting a drink. Because seeing two people she had forced herself to like arguing with each other was confusing.

Kanaye was about to call out to Maeko, but she left too fast. So instead he turned and glared at Misaki. "What the fuck, Misaki-san? Seriously, what the fuck?" Kanaye couldn't think of anything more. He was too drunk for that.

"You're asking me that. I'd like to know the same thing! You can't just go taking advantage of Maeko-chan like that! It's rude and disrespectful to her. You need to cool off and collect yourself Sempai before you go doing something that you will regret later!" Misaki told him and sighed.

"Excuse me I'm going to check on Maeko-chan! I need to talk to her anyway." She hurried off to find Maeko.

Kanaye blinked and followed. "Misaki-san, what the hell are you talking about? I'm not taking advantage of her!" He yelled, annoyed. "Seriously, are you sure you're not just jealous? Or at least explain to me how I'm taking advantage of her!"

"She's not used to such things! And you just don't go kissing a girl in your state. It's just not done. And besides that if you can't see how that's trying to take advantage of her, I don't see why I have to explain. You should use your head Sempai!" Misaki snapped back.
