it's my party and i'll cry if i want to...
Who: Kozue and the adoring public You
What: Festivities
Where: Bar Kidnap
When: July 21
Why: Because of presents and alcohol.

True to her word, Kozue had established herself in the VIP area of Bar Kidnap—still pretending to be blissfully unaware of the frightening or ominous implications of the name. She hadn't gone to much (or any) trouble to prove that this was a birthday party, however; she was dressed up, in an outfit a bit scantier than her normal going-out attire. She was sporting a green, sequin-covered minidress and a pair of heels of a ridiculous height. And her hair was even more carefully arranged than normal.

The VIP area was situated on a balcony, overlooking the rest of the club; from there, Kozue was engaged in chatting amicably with one of the older girls from the tennis club, but her attention kept drifting to the entrance downstairs. More people should show up. There weren't nearly enough for the party to be genuinely successful. So, every few moments, she cast a nervous glance downstairs.

The club itself wasn't all that packed; it was a weeknight, after all, and if any of the actual grown-up patrons noticed the steady stream of highschoolers, they weren't making a fuss. And the bouncers had either been bribed very efficiently, or were under instructions not to care, either.

Speaking of gaijin with large amounts of money and perhaps questionable taste, Kozue had chosen to make an appearance on the dance floor for a little while. Now, she was dancing in a loose knot with a group of girls from First Year, moving with a bit more enthusiasm and abandon than she usually displayed. It was one of the effects of the drinks she'd had so far—Kozue wasn't falling-down-drunk, but she had certainly left the regions of sobriety rather far behind.

When the song broke, she stopped, taking a breath, and glanced over to the door; she caught sight of Kou and smiled. She was surprised—she'd gotten his text but it had sounded grudging enough that she'd doubted—and pleased. With a wave, she broke off from the group of dancing girls and trotted across the floor in her too-high shoes to meet Kouchisei. "Hey! I'm glad you made it!"

"Kondo-san. You look nice," Kou said nervously. Pretty in a sequined dress that showed too much skin. Now, Kou was wondering how she moved wearing those shoes. He didn't want Kozue hurting herself. "Shouldn't you wear something more conservative?"

"You like it?" Kozue asked, entirely unsure. Did he, or didn't he? She smiled all the same, and with one hand smoothed down the bottom hem of the dress. An uncomfortable fidget, and not an entirely conscious one. "Well, I usually would, you're right… Maybe this was a bit too much."

Then, "Do you want to go see the VIP area? It's pretty nice, and we have it all for the party."

Kou attempted to hide his discomfort by scratching the back of his head, but it had already shown on his face by the time he had lowered his hand. He breathed with relief that Kozue had agreed. It made the evening feel better. He decided to ignore his doubt.

Being out of home and deciding for himself? It felt good.

It meant he was an adult.

"If we must."

Kozue tipped her head slightly; "It's quieter, there, too?" She offered; she had to raise her voice slightly to be heard in the club atmosphere, after all, and she had the impression that Kou wouldn't really like such a loud place.

She'd considered his feelings.

He caught himself before he thought it might be something more and nodded. "The music's giving me a headache," he said. He wasn't used to loud places, lights, or too much noise of any sort. It was certain he wouldn't be coming here again after tonight.

At least he'd given it a try.

"But it's your birthday, so I'll try to enjoy it," he said quickly.

She smiled, and motioned to him to follow, as she turned and headed for the stairs; she waited, there, so they could walk up together. Mostly—she told herself—so that in case her shoes slipped she would have someone to grab onto and wouldn't go tumbling down and break her nose or something awful like that.

"It's not all that bad, but I think the DJ at Kiriko-san's party was better," she added.

"I wouldn't know. I only stopped to drop a present," he said absentmindedly.

Kiriko had acted unprofessionally. She'd clouded her judgment. Failed at asserting authority. Given some dangerous people leeway. He'd expected better, and wished he hadn't bothered. People knew they weren't getting along. A tense, stiff conversation wasn't his idea of fun; people insisted they were right when they weren't. He didn't care that people knew, however - it wasn't their business.

"Can you go upstairs wearing those?" he said. "They're death traps."

"Oh, these?" She looked down at the shoes, and frowned. "I didn't think they were this high when I bought them." Half the truth. She just hadn't thought they'd be this imbalanced. "But… I think I should be fine. Thanks for your concern, though." She smiled; looked at the stairs again; her smile faltered some. Stairs. A curse, indeed.

Kou frowned. "But you bought them in the shop."

How couldn't she have known? He gripped the rail, turned, and looked at her, with his gaze in focus and a frown on his lips.

"You're not drinking alcohol are you?"

She reddened a bit. "I am. It's my birthday." Retrospectively, maybe lying would have been the better choice, but making better choices was one of those things you didn't do when you were on the way to being drunk.

Kou believed drinking was done in civilised company. Business meetings, important meals, mingling with the purpose of getting something. Perhaps having fruit juice would be wiser, but he was an adult and one of the important things adults knew was how to pace themselves. But they also knew when to say no.

The children here needed more self-control.

"You're underage," he said pointedly.

"That's true," Kozue admitted, looking a bit uncomfortable and entirely unsure of herself. Well, of course she was underage—but of course she'd be drinking. Her party had been hosted at Bar Kidnap for a reason, after all, and it clearly wasn't the excellent dancing opportunities.

But she was at a loss for what to say; surely she shouldn't be apologizing to him for underage drinking? He wasn't her father or her older brother or anything, for goodness sake.

"If you're drinking," he didn't like the sound of that, "have water. Alcohol makes you dehydrated; quickly in places like this."

He didn't know if she'd notice his concern. Hopefully she would.

"Yeah, that's a good suggestion," she said, nodding with relief—no lecture or speech, that was comforting. "I'll make sure to have a bottle of water, thanks." She smiled; having someone to take care of you was nice, and that small delight showed on her face.

Would she drink it, though? Annoyingly, there was a persistant presence in his mind that told him she wouldn't, and were he to make sure she wouldn't be grateful. Simply, it was that Kozue couldn't be trusted.

"Whatever. Are we going to sit down?" he asked.
