it's my party and i'll cry if i want to...
Who: Kozue and the adoring public You
What: Festivities
Where: Bar Kidnap
When: July 21
Why: Because of presents and alcohol.

True to her word, Kozue had established herself in the VIP area of Bar Kidnap—still pretending to be blissfully unaware of the frightening or ominous implications of the name. She hadn't gone to much (or any) trouble to prove that this was a birthday party, however; she was dressed up, in an outfit a bit scantier than her normal going-out attire. She was sporting a green, sequin-covered minidress and a pair of heels of a ridiculous height. And her hair was even more carefully arranged than normal.

The VIP area was situated on a balcony, overlooking the rest of the club; from there, Kozue was engaged in chatting amicably with one of the older girls from the tennis club, but her attention kept drifting to the entrance downstairs. More people should show up. There weren't nearly enough for the party to be genuinely successful. So, every few moments, she cast a nervous glance downstairs.

The club itself wasn't all that packed; it was a weeknight, after all, and if any of the actual grown-up patrons noticed the steady stream of highschoolers, they weren't making a fuss. And the bouncers had either been bribed very efficiently, or were under instructions not to care, either.

"Thank you!" Kozue looked at the box, and then looked over her shoulder, searching for the place where she'd started storing presents. Where was—ah, by the huge box that Kanaye had left. "Over there, but I can take it. It's near the…well, I don't know what in the world it is, but the huge box that Satou-senpai brought. I don't even know how he carried it."

Masami looked around for the huge box. Given that it was nearly as tall as Kozue herself, it was not exactly difficult to spot. She set her own box down beside the gigantic one and turned back to Kozue.

"...Umm... so what's there to do at a place like this?" she asked, "I haven't been to something like this ever before."

"Oh! Really?" She stopped, and smiled; "Well, normally people drink and dance. The dance floor is still kind of empty, though, which makes it weird to start dancing." She glanced down to the regular floor to make sure that this was still the case, and, yep. Not enough people. "The drinks are good here, and it's easier to talk up here. Normally, if we didn't have the VIP area, you really couldn't hear what anyone else says." She jerked her head towards the dance floor, indicating that was where she was talking about.

"I don't really know how to dance anyway..." Masami said as she looked at the dance floor. "It's good we have this VIP area so we can at least talk."

She paused for a moment as she looked around some more. "Oh, drinks! I should get some tea."

Kozue grinned a little, and then stopped, and thought: "Tea? Oh. Uh. Maybe that have that thing that a friend told me about, from America…" She stopped and contemplated how to say it, and then, "Rong Island Iced Tea? I bet if you asked for one they'd have it! It's supposed to be a really popular drink there."

And it would be better for her, Kozue reflected, than having tea at a bar of all places.

"Iced tea? Well usually I prefer my tea hot, but it's summertime so iced tea is good too. Thanks Kondo-san! I think I'll go get one!" with that, Masami ran off to the bar, completely oblivious as to what she was actually going to get...

Tom noticed Masami walking over toward the bar, and thought to himself that this was an opportunity. She was decent to him, nice at times. She had tried on some level to connect.

All in all, she really had to go.

"Drinking something other then tea Sakuraba? Seems kind of pointless you know."

Masami turned to Tom, looking a little confused. "...What do you mean, other than tea? Kondo-san told me that they had some kind of iced tea so I was going to try that. She said it was called... 'Rong Island Iced Tea' I think. Have you tried it, Sagaki-senpai?"

Tom scoffed.

"Of course, I don't know why I expected you to do anything interesting.

So tell me, is there any actual substance behind that friends act of yours? Or are you just an empty shell, doing all the things you think you should be doing. Wondering through life and playing at being a person."

"......" Masami wasn't sure what to say. It certainly wasn't like him to act as... hostile as he was being.

"Umm... I'm... not really sure what you mean? It's... not an act... really..."

"Of course it is. It's an act for everyone. Satou, Ito, Kondo, every ones playing at being something. Some of them are just capable of more interesting then you."

Tom leaned in, looking at her, for a moment there was a flash of gold in his eyes, but certainly it could have been a trick of the light.

"Maybe you're just not smart enough to realize you're programing? Maybe you aren't even real. Should I just encourage people to call you a thing instead?"

Masami was really not sure what was wrong with Tom, and the idea of a shadow certainly crossed her mind but she didn't want to jump to conclusions. Either way, something deep down was getting annoyed at Tom, and it showed when she spoke.

"Sagaki-senpai... sorry, but if you have something to say, then just say it. There's no need to beat around the bush," Masami said flatly.

"Oh I rather thought I was. You really aren't that bright, or your autopilot can't recognize what I'm talking about."

Tom waved his hand dismissively.

"You are an unfeeling shell with no substance, no being, a mindless drone who's only features are "smile," "nod," and "drink tea." I find you boring Sakuraba, I've always found you boring, and now that I think about it, I pity you, because you are nothing.

That make it plain?"

Though Masami still didn't want to admit the possibility, she was now almost completely convinced that this had to be a Shadow. Or so she guessed. She quickly ran what she knew through her head... something had been bothering Tom lately, but Masami still wasn't 100% certain as to what. However, assuming something bad had happened, when now combined with this... extremely unusual behavior, it was difficult for Masami to dismiss the possibility - no, the likelihood - that she was, in fact, talking to a Shadow. And as much as she wanted to believe that the gleam in his eyes before had been just the lighting, when she considered everything else...

Masami had to remind herself not to panic, and also - especially - not to let herself be provoked by the shadow. She closed her eyes and let out a sigh, and might have spoke, but she really had no idea what to say... so she just stayed there in silence, waiting to see what would happen next.
