Entry tags:parents

Who: Parents (No kids)
What: Parent's Evening!
Where: Nanakamado
When: Evening
Why: So the parents can RUIN LIVES SOME MORE/BE EMBARASSING/WHATEVER.
Note: I don't intend to play the teachers very much. I doubt this is a surprise.

The amount of students at Nanakamado meant that it was almost impossible to book slots with all the necisarry teachers within the same time block. As a result, parents were forced to wait for a long time between each appointment.

The school had clearly foreseen this problem, the assembly hall had been prepared with seats and refreshments to keep perents who they didn't want to enrage from becoming too frustrated with the wait.

Daisuke and Elizabeth were having the time of their lives. This was what Elizabeth was born for: making small talk without saying anything interesting or relevant! Even if it was over something as pointless as grades and education, it was alright.

Daisuke had the opposite opinion: Education and grades were VERY important. Even if Kanaye was to get Satou Motors no matter what he did, Daisuke wanted his son to have the best education possible, so as to make him an excellent leader. Needless to say, his son's current interests annoyed him somewhat. But hey, he was a teenager. And it's not like Daisuke himself was innocent of being overly affectionate.

This was very, very obvious. The two were acting like they just got married yesterday. They were talking to each other rather loudly in the middle of the floor while being rather openly affectionate. Some of the more traditional parents looked at them in disdain.

Disdain, disdain, disdain, disdain.

A practically palpable air of disgust and judgment was coming from across the room, from a very small, elderly woman in a kimono. Not only was this behavior completely and stunningly inappropriate for a public place, but with a foreigner, even? The thought was obviously distinctly unpleasant to Kondo Fumiko.

It was easy to see where Kozue had gotten her height, at least. Much of the rest of her physique, though, seemed to come from the taller, blond woman who had arrived with Fumiko; Maria had seen fit not to show up in a kimono, at least, opting for a smart suit instead. She was holding onto a cup of coffee as though it were some kind of lifeline out of the uncomfortable situation that was escorting her mother-in-law to Kozue's Parent Teacher Conferences.

Akuba Michio was a stern-looking man, though hardly imposing. He was not quite as enraged by their behavior as the small old woman but still clearly disapproved.

The woman who returned to her seat next to his with two cups of coffee was thin and pale and otherwise plain and quite tired-looking, though she had gone to considerable lengths to disguise the latter two behind makeup. Rie placed her own cup on the ground next to her chair, taking care to make sure it was out of the way of passing feet, and sat very still and in silence with both hands in her lap, moving only when someone spoke too close to them.

The person at the school who sent out the mailer about the event had apparently noticed that Nawanaka Katsuo and Nawanaka Fumiko's address was far outside of Iburi. Or perhaps the school had simply sent the mail along to whoever paid the tuition bills. Either way the envelope had ended up in the personal mailbox of Nawanaka Noboru, founder and CEO of NakaCo and the uncle of Nanakamado student Nawanaka Toshimi. Noboru, though, was too busy to answer his own mail these days, and when his assistant Uehara Yukio brought it to his attention, the executive had (rather dismissively) told Yukio to go in his place. Uehara had been working for him since graduating college a few years ago, but was still too often surprised by his boss' erratic behavior.

He lingered around the reception area, hands in his pockets. He felt like he was probably supposed to be networking, but he felt too out-of-place. Yukio was almost definitely the youngest person in the room, far too young to be the parent of a high school student. Any attempt at networking here would just lead to awkward questions, he was sure. But just shuffling about made him feel like he wasn't doing his job. Deciding that he had to do something, Yukio approached the refreshment table and hesitated over a snack. Upon picking one, he shuffled over to the coffee, hesitated for a moment, and then helped himself to some of that, too. Done with the refreshment table, he took his snack and his coffee and shuffled off again--

Until he tripped over his shoes and went toppling towards the ground. He dropped his snack, and his coffee went flying on a collision course with someone nearby. Yoshio himself also hit the floor with a rather satisfying thump. He scrambled to his feet and turned towards the person who had been in the path of his flying coffee, bowing deeply. "I deeply apologize, there's no excuse for what I've done, please forgive me, I'm so sorry..."

The apology would have worked had the victim of the flying coffee been any mortal human. But alas, it was not the case.

A towering behemoth of a man, heavily tanned and tattooed, clad in garish clothes of a completely inappropriate level of casuality, rose from his seat, glowering. As he walked across towards Yukio, a severe-looking woman embarrassedly averted her eyes.

He picked the unfortunate young man up by the shirt collar and shouted "WHAT TH' HELL D'YOU THINK YER DOIN', EH? THIS SHIRT COST ME OVER 30,000 YEN, AND DAMNED IF I'M GONNA LET YOU GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS!"

The woman across the room quietly facepalmed.

Daisuke turned and looked at the man with distaste. Really, can't ANYONE be civilized? He sighed, turned to Elizabeth, blew her one final kiss, and then walked over to the scene. He looked up to the larger man and laughed. "Can't you just calm down?" he asked cheerfully. "I'll pay you for the cost of the shirt. Now isn't a time for violence, after all."

"Humph, look at these people," Akiko Aoi said as she sipped her refreshment and stared around the room with judgemental eyes. The doctor was dressed in a black business suit with her hair pulled up and clipped, though some strands hung down her face. She cut an imposing figure in her heeled shoes, even though it was clear that she could only be at most five foot six inches tall. Her manner indicated that she found this all to be trite and a waste of her time.

"Why couldn't they have just mailed us this information. I have other things to work on that are far more important then this." She was muttering to the man that stood next to her. Glancing over at him she cleared her throat as he reached for another plate of cheese squares. "Mikaru..."

The man was slightly scuffy with messy brown red hair and glasses. He was dressed in a ill fitting blazers, a pair of dark gray pants and a lighter gray turtle neck. There was a niceness to his face that resembled Misaki naturally. But his eyes were cooler and a bit blood shot from working late nights on math problems.

"S-Sorry dear." He stuttered some and she shook her head.

"You're as bad as our daughter. I hope to god she won't embaress us anymore. I have co-workers who's children go here. If her grades get any lower...I should have sent her to that progressive school in tokyo, at least then she would get these stupid ideas out of her head."

Akiko looked around and noticed Akuba-san, "I'm going to say hello. At least his daughter can stand up on her own."

"Yes dear," muttered her husband as he followed along quietly behind her.

Mikaru wasn't quite sure what to make of the whole group of people. He wasn't one to socialize normally, that was more his wife's department. The gentleman prefered to sit and work with his math in his small study in the house then hobnob with all these people. Still if it was for Misaki then he would go. His daughter ment a lot to him, she was always so nice and kind to him, even when he didn't have time to check in on her.

He looked around at the various displays of different things. One of the items put up were the cooking clubs "Best of" creations. Of course Keiichi's were on there, but there were a few of Misaki's cakes. He smiled softly and tried to get his wife's attention, and then stopped. He let his hand drop and went back to looking. She wouldn't be happy with this, it wasn't scientific. While it wasn't mathmatic either, he appriciated the geometrical styles of the pastries.

Coming seemingly from out of nowhere, Anoushka took a good look at the wondrous creations. She then followed Mikaru's line-of-sight and smiled after seeing the Cooking Club's presentations. Being fond of baking & cooking, she found delight in the creativity of the exhibits. It was rare for her to leave the confines of the Apartment Building, and even rarer to step inside the very Institution that her tennants attend. This night was more like an excursion for her than a meeting. And what's an excursion without socializing. Still, she had to be in her best. For months now, she had been declared as a Guardian to her newest tennant, Tonbo Nayuki. And she did not want to be a reason or cause of trouble for the earnest young man.

Catching the brief glance of the weary-looking man, she gives off a simple smile and a polite bow. "Hello, there. I couldn't help but notice you keenly observing these exhibits. Are they your child's handiwork, perhaps?" She hopes her inquiry is simple enough not to be invasive and light enough to elicit an answer.

Rie noticed the approaching Mrs. Aoi before her husband did. She returned her cup to the ground and motionned to get Michio's attention.

The two stood to approach Misaki's mother. Michio signed and Rie nodded to show she had understood and repeated.

"I'm glad to see you are well."

"It's a pleasure to see you and your wife again Akuba-san," Akiko said with a pleasent smile that gave her a grace and confidence that her daughter did not share. "I trust that your daughter has been well?"

Mikaru wandered over slowly and nodded to Rie, smiling at her some. His casualness was very different to his wife's stiffness.

"I can't believe that they set it up like this, you would think that they would have done things differently, considering we're all very busy." Akiko was saying when Mikaru added in thoughtfully.

"Though the food is very good. Did you see the displays yet. It seems the clubs are very talented."

Having abandoned her daughter-in-law for having the gall to speak that evil language English in her presence, Fumiko had begun moving around the room, very slowly, looking at some of the displays from the art and cultural clubs. There was a particular flower arrangement on one of the tables that drew her attention and (still taking tiny, slow steps) she made her way closer to appraise it.

After a few minutes, she felt confident in declaring, either to those who were nearby her, or to nobody at all, "This isn't entirely without merit."

Akiko had left her husband to talk to Maeko's family to get herself a new drink. She noticed an older woman apprising the flowers. "Flower arrangements? I suppose not, though I don't see the use in it. Pardon I couldn't help but hear you while passing. Does your grand child go to this school?"

"The use?" Fumiko turned around, looking upwards, eyes fixing on Akiko after a moment or two of squinting. The overhead lighting in here wasn't great for her old eyes, after all, and bothering to crane her neck upwards for people was irritating.

"I meant the application of the technique. Whoever did this has had some basic training, although the work here—" she pointed to one of the three stems "—and here—" a leaf slightly crooked "—is sloppy at best. But the overall execution is balanced enough to show some promise, assuming the poor child gets proper tutelage in time."

A pause, and then she answers. "My granddaughter is in her first year of high school here, yes. And your own child?" She made the assumption.

Wife busy with work, Katashi had left Emi with her grandfather and went to the parent's meeting on his own. The meetings themselves were something he felt obligated to attend, but they were also always something to simultaneously look forward to and dread. There was always good news to be heard from Emi's teacher's, but some of the teachers and parents that attended these things were... not always the sort of people he enjoyed talking to. Still, for the most part even they were entertaining and he couldn't imagine why even a wealthy person would turn down the opportunity for free refreshments. Well, free if one didn't include it in the tuition bill.

He was currently feeling rather young and handsome in the assembly hall. There were the old, ugly, fat, bald, trying-too-hard, weird, and... well, there were a few that were mildly frightening. There were plenty of exceptions to his criticism, but it just wasn't as fun to pick them out of the crowd. He smiled to himself as he took a sip of the drink he picked up at one of the refreshment tables, scanning the room for familiar faces.

Mikaru had given some time to Michio and Rie and had wandered off to look at a few of the math displays out. Daisuke, in his haste, nearly ran into the refreshment table that Mikaru and Katashi were at. He managed to stop himself in time, noticed the two men, and decided that it was less likely that Katsuo would kill him if he looked like he was actually talking. "Oh, hello, fancy seeing you two here!" he remarked, still somewhat shaken. "Pardon my intrusion, but I just wanted to say hello! I always want to meet other parents. My name is Satou Daisuke of Satou Motors. You two are...?" he asked quickly.

Kimura Hasumi, cleverly disguised as a respectable adult, was also making full use of the refreshment stand. Oh, they have those little pig in a blanket thingies! I love those! So far, the free food seemed like the highlight of the evening; parent-teacher conferences were bo-ring. Still, the Tachibanas were paying her to keep up with their daughter, and this kind of token effort was the only thing preventing them from realizing that she'd been...questionably dedicated to her job for the last twelve years.

Attend parent-teacher conference. Report back. Profit.

Hasumi sighed. She loved Yoshichan dearly, she really did, but having to put actual effort into something was a real drag.

Hasumi, were she not attending on strictly business, would've hissed somehing insulting and allowed things to escalate. She could take on this skinny little— But, as it stood, she wasn't getting paid to make a fuss. Not that she was getting paid for much of anything.

"Oh, excuse me," she murmured, stepping aside and trying to look like she'd taken the admonition to heart.

There had been a very powerful urge to just scoff and say "kids these days", except the wife had told him that it was probably a little too rude to that.

Tanaka Shichiro and Tanaka Chinatsu had taken to looking at the cultural club displays, largely to distract the former from the rest of the parents. Shichiro would have found a lot to complain otherwise. Chinatsu was looking at the displays with a completely serene, somewhat pleased expression, though anyone who had been observant enough would have noticed that she had had the same expression since they arrived.

Shichiro had to stop himself from making a comment about the tea, though. It simply wasn't up to par with his tastes.

Ryoto Oubai, experienced at running an upmarket restaurant and ryotei, was quick to spot people unhappy with their food. They liked the cuisene her served, of course - they made a point of knowing their customers and their backgrounds. Some businesses, like Satou Motors, were customers. Plenty weren't. His son wanted to take his friends there. Fine, since he was glad the boy was getting out more. But there wasn't a chance in hell they'd host a whole kendo team.

Walk over. Hold the cup. Talk.

He looked aside at the old-looking man who wasn't drinking from his cup.

"Not pleasant?"

The temptation to switch from coffee to wine (or, if Nanakamado was really kind to its parents, something, anything stronger) was growing. After leaving Satou Elizabeth and Ikeda Sayuri to their own devices, Maria had gone to look at a few of the cultural club displays. After a few minutes, finding everything… rather boring and high schoolish (imagine that), she had found her way back to the refreshment table, and was contemplating just how much of an earful her mother-in-law would give her for drinking.

But, god, if it wasn't an unpleasant evening already. Between the repeated cross-the-room glares from Fumiko and the dirty looks from complete strangers, Maria was sick of the place already. It didn't help that there were two other blond women in the room, and both of them were … questionable didn't quite convey the magnitude of it, and what was that busty woman even wearing?

Maria started looking through the selection for a decent red.

Wandering off from the ah interesting duo, Mikaru headed over to get something a bit stronger for his drink. He loved Akiko dearly but sometimes even he was tested by her actions. He wondered if to her this was more a networking social event for her own purposes. Though to him it didn't much matter, if it was something that she wanted Akiko got it. It was what had both attracted and repulsed him to her all at the same time.

He noticed a lady by the drinks and smiled some, "Busy evening we're having yes?"

"Busy is one way of describing it," Maria said, finally choosing a bottle, and looking up. Her voice was tired, but not tired enough to be rude; she even returned the smile. After all, this man looked like one of the more normal, non-criminal people in the room, and perhaps a brief conversation would get her mind off of Fumiko's glares for a while. "This is my first year coming to one of these myself… I can't say this is exactly what I'd expected."

And that seemed like it was becoming more and more her husband's fault as the evening wore on. He'd done this before; how hard would a little warning have been?
