Entry tags:parents

Who: Parents (No kids)
What: Parent's Evening!
Where: Nanakamado
When: Evening
Why: So the parents can RUIN LIVES SOME MORE/BE EMBARASSING/WHATEVER.
Note: I don't intend to play the teachers very much. I doubt this is a surprise.

The amount of students at Nanakamado meant that it was almost impossible to book slots with all the necisarry teachers within the same time block. As a result, parents were forced to wait for a long time between each appointment.

The school had clearly foreseen this problem, the assembly hall had been prepared with seats and refreshments to keep perents who they didn't want to enrage from becoming too frustrated with the wait.

Sayuri watched the scene unfold from across the room. Was this...? No, it couldn't be, could it? She'd never met the man in person, but for one thing, the (terrifying) teenaged boy that had broken her antique vase not weeks earlier didn't look a damn thing like him.

She'd have to keep looking.

It was hard to miss the two, both exceedingly tall and dressed in what many might consider distasteful clothes: he in a flashy sharkskin suit and she in an equally expensive red dress, cut low enough that it just skirted conservative. They had come to an agreement (with him in a headlock) earlier that night that no matter what she wore there would be some gossip. Then he’d made a lewd remark, she’d socked him in the stomach, and he’d come to the odd gathering with a sore belly.

Not that you’d know he could feel pain by the looks of him; the temperature of the room seemed to drop when they stepped in, late to the party as any good yakuza dealing with civilians might be. His scan of the room he was eerily like a snake scenting the air, stopping dead on each and every person he recognized, shrewd smile plastered to his lips.

Until he saw one burly mook throwing his weight around stupidly; he wasn‘t sure who the man was or where he was from, but he was not one of his. The smile faded, replaced by a hard, cold line and his eyes, half-lidded and sleepy, snapped open as he slipped away from his wife to approach them. He already hated the man.

“Isn’t this shameful?” He observed, giving the gathering of men a slash of a smile, nodding to the one he recognized as Satou, and then concentrating almost entirely on the big one. “I don’t think I know you. It’d be hard to miss a big gorilla like you.”

Daisuke turned in surprise when Katsuo had made his presence known. He didn't exactly like the man (who would like yakuza), but he was polite enough if you payed the fees and shut up, so he dealt with the other man as cordially as possible. "Ah, Shirai-san." he said, bowing. "Glad to see you could make it." he finished rather lamely. He promptly turned on his heel and walked away. He managed to look calm, but his actions themselves revealed his panic.

She knew in an instant she was looking at the Shirais. Who else could they possibly be? Besides the fact that the little hellion certainly looked like his father (and his mother - was that his mother? Intimate looking couple, but who knows with these yakuza types), the sharkskin was a dead giveaway.

With the woman left alone, she saw her opening, steeled her nerves, and intercepted the blonde at the refreshments table.

"Hello." She bowed low. "Shirai-san? I'm Ikeda Sayuri, Kiriko's mother."

The tall, not-entirely-Japanese woman was picking through the refreshments with the sullen interest of the deathly bored and trying to occupy themselves with the anything that wasn’t the folks at the party. Invariably they’d drive her nuts and she’d be tempted to relive her high school days.

She let out a quiet grump and folded her arms, dark red manicured nails digging into her arms as she suppressed the urge to go grab Katsuo and rant at him about what a raw deal she got out of being in love with him and how she wanted a goddamned smoke and some hard sake and to be as far away from all the nerds she picked on at high school immediately.

When Sayuri did approach and address her she whirled around instinctively and greeted the other woman with a face reminiscent of her delinquent days: the corner of her mouth drawn up into a snarl and one fine eyebrow cocked in the expression equivalent of ‘what the fuck do you want?’

But it only lasted for a second, and the pleasant smile she’d practiced for endless hours in front of the mirror for her proper-Japanese-housewife disguise snapped into place.

“Hello,” she chirped, voice strained into a sickening mockery of a telemarketer greeting, “I’m Shirai Tora, Reizo’s mother.”

She might have offered a bow, but she didn’t want her boobs popping out again.

Fear flashed across her face at the sneer but faded into nervous confusion and an accompanying smile when Tora greeted her. Was that mocking? Either way, so far so good, right? But good, at least she was the mother. With the dress she was wearing, Sayuri was beginning to wonder...

"Er, yes," another nervous, frozen smile. "Kiriko, uh, brought him home to introduce us to him just a few weeks ago."

With dried blood still on some of his clothes.

"Have you met my daughter? They seem... very... happy together."

Tora’s smile froze in place, and an eyebrow twitched as dying to rocket upwards into “huh?” but she just shook her head gently and then canted it in silent question. She rubbed inconspicuously at the minor mark one nail had left on one of her arms, arms still folded beneath her chest, and kept the demure-Japanese-housewife smile in place as best she could, no matter how hard it clashed with her hugging red dress, obvious mixed nationality, and blonde hair.

“I’m afraid I haven’t had the chance to meet your daughter, but I’m sure she’s..” Her bright eyes flicked over the other woman, as if appraising, stuck momentarily on her chest (and a smug smirk threatened to tug at her lips), “a.. pretty, charming girl.” After another appraising look Tora decided that she was pretty enough to pop out something her son might be interested in.

She forced a quiet, modest laugh and her smile shifted into apologetic, “But I haven’t even heard of him having a girlfriend. That boy never tells me anything.”

She made a promise to herself to torture him next time she got the little runt in arm’s reach.

Sayuri's eyebrow also twitched. She knew that eyeflick. She'd been giving that eyeflick to every reasonably attractive woman in the room since she got there and so was presently struggling to avoid the kneejerk reaction of at least mine are real.

The whole process manifested on her face as slightly pursed lips that soon melted into another confused smile.

"Er, you haven't?"

Maybe meeting the parents was just another one of the rules of propriety that the yakuza neglected to follow.

"... Actually, your son said they were planning to marry one day?"

There was a hint of tentativeness to her voice. She had not quite figured out how to ask whether or not her daughter was selling drugs, but was secretly holding on to hope that the other woman would disapprove of any prospective union as heartily as she did.

Another flash freeze, minor twitch, but the eyebrow battle was lost, but that was enough to stifle a more severe reaction. She tilted her head at a nearly severe angle and leaned a smidge in towards the other woman, plastered smile cracking and then transforming into a curious frown.

“Marry?” Was all she could ask, flabbergasted.

"I know!" The response came out kind of stammered as Sayuri's hands flew instinctively and protectively up, though Tora had probably leaned in only but an inch. She noticed her hands and tried to inconspicuously lower them.

"Young love, you know?" she intoned hopefully. "They said they were set on it, but don't you think that's something most teenagers grow out of?"

Despite the phrasing, this was not a rhetorical question.

The other woman lifting her hands up instinctively was an added comfort in this newly confusing time. Her son might be thinking of marrying some girl she’d never even heard of, or was involved in some braindead scheme, but she was still scary, hot, and had the biggest boobs in the room, and would get a gratuitous amount of pleasure out of flaying her son alive (and her husband for insisting they come and putting her in this awkward situation) when they swung by his little apartment later.

She frowned hard at the woman, or rather through her as she was no longer focused on her face despite staring so candidly into it.

“Yes,” she said after a long, drawn out moment of staring into space and trying to figure out just what in the hell the little moron was up to, “most do, but my son seems to have inherited his father’s,” she put a fair bit of emphasis on that, making sure the woman knew that it was definitely Katsuo and not her, “stubborn, willful manner.”

The frown, at least, was good news. Perhaps she'd try to talk some sense into her son - but then, if he was a stubborn as she was being led to believe, perhaps not. She could not decide how to feel and so settled for a stiff nod.

"I.. I suppose we'll just have to see, then," she said finally. Her fingers drummed the dessert table and she was soon occupying herself with getting a cup of coffee.

"Well, I think Kiriko's teacher will be speaking to me next," she said, hoping that this was in fact true and she would not need to hide in the ladies room for the next fifteen minutes to keep up appearances. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Shirai-san." She bowed and retreated with as much haste as was approrpiate, beelining for the night's organizer to check her place on the teacher appointments list.

Ryota's smiled momentarily faded. Thugs. Commoners. Foreigners. Yakuza. If he'd known what sort of people the school tolerated he'd have sent his son somewhere else.

He glanced at the assembled parents and came to one conclusion:

There were too many blonde people.

Their hair was loud and vulgar. They wanted to keep their nationalities. How could they want - deserve - the right to vote and keep state benefits if they kept clinging to their home country? Ridiculous.

He kept his gaze on the Yakuza, though. Just in case.

Once again, Hidehito's attention shifted away from the man he was berating. President of Satou Motors? Though he was probably at least somewhat responsible for the man's own flashy vehicle, he couldn't bring himself to care. He smelled danger.

And danger had arrived, a viper clad in sharkskin. Another yakuza, doubtlessly. This newcomer wasn't like the Okinawan thugs Hidehito normally dealt with, though. Far more calm. Far more dangerous. Though he was dense, Mr. Kojima wasn't so dense as to want to pick a fight with a man like that.

"'m from Okinawa. Last time I was in these parts, I wasn't involved in any o' this, right? So I'm guessin' that you're the top dog here, huh? Well, you could say th' same about me where I hail from." He cracked his knuckles, not as a threat, but rather as an apelike show of power. "So y'can stop calling me gorilla. I'm not one o' your thugs."

The woman across the room stood up and began to walk towards the growing crowd.

Yukio had been in plenty of situations where the repercussions of his actions were far more severe than the actions themselves. He'd once lost a girlfriend for offering his seat to an old woman on the train, he'd nearly been fired once when he asked his boss about what his parents had been like, and he frequently got parking tickets while only leaving his car for ten minutes or so--but he had never done anything nearly as bad as spilling a cup of coffee and creating a yakuza gathering.

The man who rescued him from Kojima had promptly disappeared, and he seemed to be the only person in this gathering with whom it would be safe appropriate to converse with. He backed away to pick up the snack he'd dropped and used the napkin he'd been holding it with to clean up any coffee that had missed the Okinawan yakuza man and made it to the floor. When this was finished he looked at the group of people warily. "Pleasure to me-et you," he said, his voice failing a little, despite the fact that he had not actually introduced himself to anyone.

He walked (backwards) to the nearest trash can in an attempt to escape.
