WHO: Kozue and Keiichi
WHAT: Present! A Present!
WHERE: Chagall Cafe.
WHEN: After Seiko's Dungeon.
WHY: Kozue cannot resist her compulsion to buy the world.

Kozue had been medicating her doubts and worries in much the same way she had done after other stints in Paradise—aside from her own—shopping and ice cream and cake. Of course, she had covered two out of three of those things in her own place in Paradise. So she was out for coffee and cake; she was also being productive.

At the used bookstore, when she'd meant to buy a Feel Better gift for Renju, or an I Regret That Your Head God Is On Vacation present (they didn't make cards for that), she had ended up buying... More things. For other people. At least, in a used book store, she hadn't found anything for herself, which had probably saved her some money in the end.

She'd texted Keiichi to let him know she had something to give him—and she'd gotten a piece of peach pie while she waited. With a side of ice cream. If Ito showed up in time, he could have some.

Chagall Cafe was one of the few Iburian haunts that Keiichi spent any amount of time at. Especially lately, he had been getting out less and less, spending lots of time in the dorms.

Still, he always had a stomach for a nice baked treat. He was perfectly capable with brownies and cupcakes and the like, but if you wanted a chocolate filled croissant, that was beyond Ito's capabilities.

He had dressed in a hurry to meet Kondo-san after her text, throwing on the first clean pair of jeans he saw and one of his father's "The Ice Age Cometh" t-shirts. Given his elemental alignment, he found the shirt somewhat amusing, but it mostly reminded him of the Crimson Lotus Academy, and almost exploding into a frozen pile of innards.

Not the best image before getting something to eat, really.

Opening the door to the cafe, Keiichi's eyes scanned the establishment briefly, finding her sitting at a table. He wanted something to eat, but decided to meet up with Kozue first. Delicious baked treats could wait.

"Heya," Keiichi called, from a few steps away from her table. At his greeting of Kozue, the cashier looked at Ito for a few moments and shot Keiichi an annoyed look.

Sometimes, Keiichi thought, the world just disliked him for no good reason. Shrugging the stink eye off, Keiichi pulled up a chair at Kozue's table. "Holding up okay? After...you know?"

Discussing Paradise and magical head gods in public had to be done in an oblique manner, after all.

Kozue looked up from her pie, waving a little as Keiichi approached the table; she smiled, but her attention fluttered away towards the annoyed-looking cashier. Since she could not afford to alienate the staff at every place of tasty baked goods, she stuck up a hand to wave for a waiter or... You know, the cashier to come over. Whatever they did here—Kozue always got table service, but that did not mean that table service was what was actually offered.

"Mostly, I'm just kind of pissed off," she admitted, as Keiichi sat. Which was probably the first time she'd admitted that, to anybody, at least on the team. She sighed, and picked up her fork again. "But it's always worse there, and better out here." Internal emotions, and external ones, too, she reflected; Paradise was more intense, and it always seemed to have a way of getting at you in the worst spots. "Though it's not like I'm..." She pursed her lips. "Why do you ask?"

Keiichi was generally constantly amazed at Kozue's way with people. With the exception of some of the Persona users, she was remarkably good at getting people to help her out.

Said cashier, actually was on his way over to the table.

"Pissed off at what," Keiichi asked, shaking his head. "I can imagine a long list. I'm still picking glitter out of my shoes. Probably will be all week.

That explained why, even in the chilly weather, Keiichi was wearing sandals.

Ito-san's eyes were focused on her peach pie. With vanilla ice cream. Delicious. But he could resist. This was an important discussion.

"Just curious," he admitted. "I try to check up on people after going in. It's...sort of miserable for most of us, really. Myself included, but..." How the Hell did he put this?

"...I've almost killed myself in there enough that I'm kind of, sort of used to it."

"One more of these?" She asked Keiichi, pointing to her own dessert, and then indicating the cashier (who she fixed with a glowing smile as he approached). "It's good. Thanks, can I get another of these?" She was already reaching into her purse for bills; if she was ordering for the man, she should be treating, too. And neither the fact that she did have a way with people, nor that she was making decisions with confidence she never would have had, a month ago, crossed her mind.

As the cashier shambled away again, Kozue turned to Keiichi. "... no, not about the glitter, this wasn't as hard to get out as the first time, anyway. About… Well, I can't believe how much of our team doesn't have a clue." She lifted a bite of pie and watched it for a moment. "How are you holding up?"

Keiichi's hand was halfway to his wallet when he noticed her reaching for her own. Said hand went back to rest on the table.

"Thank you, Kondo-san," Keiichi said, a broad smile on his face. Peach pie! Today was already turning around.

"The team doesn't have a clue about a bunch of things," Keiichi grumbled. "We're still not so much of the team, though we are getting better."

"I'm okay," he admitted. "Not really as drained as usual. Didn't have to do too much and didn't get myself almost killed. You and Ikeda-san took care of the...situation, so..."

Part of him was upset by that fact. It was, he knew, the part that had nearly killed the girl he was sitting with by doing something Toru had told him was called the Divine Trinity.

She nodded. Maybe a little more tensely than was warranted, given the casual situation and the surplus of desserts. Her mind was somewhere else—not on when she had fought Keiichi's Shadow, though, not in particular. Perhaps it was not healthy that she had moved past much of that, much of all the things that happened in Paradise, so quickly, yet refused to move past this.

"... Why do you always get so angry at them?" She asked, after a moment. "The ... people we go there to get, their other selves. You aren't the only one, but what you were talking about, this time."

"Because they generally try to kill us," Keiichi replied, easily. "It's...them but not them, you know? Exaggerations of repressed qualities."

That was generally his viewpoint. Keiichi thought it was a heck of a lot less "thou art I" and a lot more "thou art a part of I."

"I also like to try and get their attention. Engage them. Keep them focused away from other people. Some of them respond better than others. Others complete ignore me, like Sonozaki-san's. Those are my least favorites."

Keiichi scratched at his jaw. "I guess it's less actual anger and more...bluster? I don't know. It helps me get through there. When I'm quiet is usually when I'm doing worst."

She hadn't thought of that. She finally took that bite of pie, and chewed, thinking it over. "That makes more sense," she said, not adding, than I had given it credit for. "But do you think your friends and team-mates really need that? Does it help them do what they need to do?" She went for another bite of food and stopped, about halfway there. "It is us."

She said it decisively, more decisively than she had planned, and it was only after she said it that she realized to what extent the truth of that mattered to her. "I think every piece of us is us. Trying to distance ourselves from them, that's how we've all ended up in this ugly mess to begin with."

"The more we try to distance ourselves from them, the more we fall back into the habits that made them so exaggerated in the first place. Isn't the whole lesson... well, embracing them?" She put down her fork and let out a short breath, followed by a shake of her head. "No, I'm sorry, maybe I'm not making that much sense."

Keiichi raised a hand to his chin as she spoke. Only once she finished did he speak.

"It is about embracing them, I suppose. But it's not about giving into them. If we gave into them we would be no better than they were. We'd be exactly what they claimed we were -- JUST them."

It was one of the few things Keiichi thought he'd figured out.

"I want to be more assertive. I want to play a bigger role. But I don't want to be..."

"A Balinese Nazi" went unsaid.

"It makes sense," Keiichi replied. "As much as any other theory we can have. We're sort of in the dark here."

"We could walk to somewhere further away," Kozue offered, after a moment. "Or take the train. I wouldn't mind at all." She wanted to say more—either to keep going and cover her offer, make it seem like something else, or to ask him to talk about what had actually happened. On the one hand, she could ask gently, and see if he wanted to speak about it. That might lend too much gravity to their arrangement, though...

But then she thought back on that conversation they'd had, right after the team had saved her. There was already a good deal of gravity here, wanted or not, and as much as it was a bit strange to admit about your ex-boyfriend and planned-on hookup, that talk had helped her.

So as much as she was tempted to make a helpfully snide comment about Iburi Duper Mart's food or employees or funny smell, instead, she asked, "Do you want to go back there? I don't want to… Push you, if you would rather not."

"No," he replied, shaking his head. "It's closest, and it's not bad for what it is. Besides, I don't think I'm up for playing spy today."

Keiichi chuckled a bit. It was a pleasant memory; for the most part, his memories of Kondo Kozue were overwhelmingly positive. And this considering she'd broken up with him.

"It's...I never did tell the story did I? Though I imagine people figured it out, considering the coverage I heard the story got."

It was sort of ridiculous, really. He'd had to dispel a bunch of reporters because of it, too.

"It's what it sounded like. Guy tried to mug me on the way back from the Duper Mart, I fled, got chased into a dead end, stabbed...and escaped the only way I knew how. Paradise."

He sighed. It HAD been a good idea. It would even have worked, too. Except...

"I thought it was bad luck, until I realized that it's the person's mindset. If I'd have gone in with you guys, it would probably have triggered pretty soon, anyway."

She tipped her head, a little, thinking; her hand stopped, halfway to her purse. "Do you think? Could it happen to someone while they were in there with a bigger group?" The fact that it never had, despite the overwhelming evidence that they were all, at various times, acutely miserable and in conflict with their inner selves? Suggested something else to Kozue, though she could not quite put together. Parts of it eluded her.

"How come some of us needed to be tossed in by… Well, whoever's doing this?" She was still not fully prepared to rule out her theory of lure-and-giant-sparkly-thing, though it was looking less and less likely as time went by. She would have gone on, but the territory was veering into a personal direction she found she did not want to head; her own experience. Admitting that no, she hadn't ever been as miserable as right then, right before she went into Paradise. So she changed topics a little—just a little, onto Keiichi and Not Her.

"We heard the coverage, but things always get changed for the news, right? And... it wasn't Shirai, was it? That tried to mug you?"

"I'm unsure," he admitted, readily, because he really had no idea whatsoever. "I do know that I was never that miserable as I was at that time, so it probably was only a matter of time."

He could remember the despairing feeling pretty clearly; if it wasn't what he'd felt like when locked down by Sonozaki-san's Shadow, it was pretty close.

"And no," Keiichi stated. "It wasn't Shirai, nor was it Arai-san. It was actually...you ever hear of a guy named Ginjiro? It was one of his gang of thugs. They're apparently kind of notorious around Nanakamado."

They'd even, he heard, tried to break into the dormitories. Lawless thugs, really.

"As for the rest..." He hesitated, swallowed hard, but finally nodded. "Do you mind if we walk and talk? I'd like to get to the Duper Mart soon. If you'll be coming over, I'd also like to pick up a few things for dinner."

"I like curry," she announced, a propos of mostly-nothing, as she rose from her chair. "And we can walk and talk." She resettled her purse, and waited for him to join her. Briefly, she had the capacity to look down at the tall boy, instead of craning her neck upwards. "And... Yeah, Ginjiro, that rings a bell. I sort of thought we'd had enough thugs as is."

"Shall we go?" She wanted to find something else to say—either in the realm of tell me what happened or you don't need to tell me what happened, but she could not decide. So she left it in his hands.

"Curry I can do," Keiichi said. "Japanese or Thai style? I've been trying to learn Thai for Sonozaki-san's sake. She likes spicy food, so I'm considering doing a Cooking Club session on it."

With food in his mind, he was brought back by the mention of Genjiro. "This town has no shortage, it seems..."

Enough about that.

"Yeah, lets." Keiichi rose from his seat, reclaiming the height advantage. He knew hand-holding wasn't appropriate in this situation, so he sort of let them dangle at his sides as they made their way out of the restaurant.

As they walked, Keiichi was quiet, trying to figure out exactly how to go forward with what he was going to say. "I was kind of a wreck for a while, to be honest," he admitted. "I hid most of it with puns and my usual...Keiichiness. But around the team blowup, I was losing it, but I forced it back. Until about the time of Sonozaki-san's place. I...ended up confronting her shadow outside of Paradise. She kicked me in the groin and threw me inside."

That, of course, was only part of the story.

Kozue walked quietly, one hand propping up her purse and the other at her side; if she had any doubts or questions as far as where hands should go, she wasn't sharing them. A moment (a long moment) after Keiichi finished speaking, she turned to look at him.

It had been a long, rather breath-holding minute, as she waited for him to continue and heard nothing. So he wanted her input—her… well, she wasn't sure what. He wasn't the type to fish for sympathy. Part of her was simply curious as to why this had never come fully to light before. "I knew she trapped you in there, but... Well, Shadows do some pretty awful things."

As far as curry went, she kept quiet; this hardly seemed like the time.

"That wasn't really the problem. I had a talk with her in there...in that...big plain of ice that you found me on. She basically just left me there after it. No fanfare, no fighting...nothing."

The walk to the Iburi Duper Mart was slow, but Keiichi had to admit that it was helping to get this all off his chest.

"That was probably what did it, really," he said. "It was sort of proof positive that I didn't matter. Nothing I did mattered. The Shadow was going to leave me to die in there unless you all came to help."

That had been bad enough for him, but really, that in and of itself wasn't quite enough.

"It was...less that, though, than that I never got taken seriously. I always got shouted down when I tried to lead, whenever I tried to take a position of importance."
He shook his head. "Though, I imagine you figured that was probably one of my issues. Ikeda-san did pretty quickly."

Keiichi shot a quick look over to her as they walked. "I really did want to lead the team. I thought I could do a good job. Well, except for the fact that the other thing I run has no one come to it..."

A TIME SKIP LATER

Kozue had found herself a safe vantage point in the kitchen, a perch on top of one of the counters that Keiichi was not using, and she sat there, swinging her feet slightly and watching him work. It wasn't fascinating, but it did have some inherent appeal; mostly, the motion back and forth and the occasional moment of danger. She was not, however, sure how a whole TV show was made from doing this. Maybe doing this suspended over a pit of lava, or a tank of sharks...

That sounded awkwardly like a place in Paradise could potentially be, so she tuned that thought out. And, instead, went back to watching Keiichi move around the kitchen, and trying to figure out precisely what he was up to.

"... is it finished?"

She had asked this with regularity almost since he had begun cooking.

By Keiichi's understanding, curry was not something that took a long time to cook. His understanding of time was however being tested by Kozue's impatience.

"Almost," he said, returning to his rice cooker to make sure the rice was done. Rice was important, after all, to soak up some of the spice of the curry. Keiichi gave the curry a final stir as he moved away from the rice, trying to finish mixing everything together. It looked just about done, and two plates were by the rice cooker waiting to be filled with food.

He scooped out the rice onto each plate, before whirring back over to the pan on the stove to lift it up off the heat with one hand, turning the burner off with the other.

"Would you like to eat here or back in my room?" he asked, placing the pan down on a non-hot burner, and began to ladle the red curry dish over the rice. "More or less of the sauce," he then asked. "More will be spicier."

Kozue just kept watching, head turning left and right to watch Keiichi zip back and forth; she provided answers to his questions as they came up, feet still swinging and rear end still firmly planted on the counter. "Your room. Medium sauce, can you do that? It's done?"

The last question was punctuated by a sort of raise in the pitch of her voice, enthused, and, now that she thought about it, hungry.

Keiichi made Kozue's plate such that most of the curry was off to the side. "Ladle a bit of it over the rice at a time," he said, bringing both plates over to the kitchen's table. "You can control the spice better that way."

There were placesettings ready, put there in the few spare moments he'd had. "Dinner is served," Keiichi said, grinning, and plopping down in one of the chairs. He was also quite hungry, but he forced himself to hold off.

"And now that we have food, we can continue that discussion we were having earlier."

This course of action forced Kozue to hop down from the counter, and make her way (with what awful effort!) to the other chair. She sat down, resettled her skirt slightly, and looked across at Keiichi. The food smelled good—but that wasn't really her primary focus at the moment.

"Our conversation from before?"

Her tone was light, casual, and very artfully designed to feign having forgotten. "What were we talking about, again?"

Maybe he meant something else.

"You know," Keiichi began, taking a quick bite of his meal to make sure it was edible -- yup, edible. Pretty good, actually. "The discussion we were having earlier, about your helpfulness to the team, and you in general? That you kept deflecting?"

The smile he gave her was equal parts "go on, try some" and "I'm not as much of an idiot as everyone thinks I am, am I?"

She picked up her utensils, with a low sigh. "You're supposed to let that slide with a... a gentlemanly grace or something, you know?" In a moment, she'd be trying a bit of the curry. Now, she looked upwards a little, and pushed a bite of food across the plate. "But you're not going to, are you?"

She took that opportunity to pause, and take a bite of food. It let her gather her thoughts, and then it distracted her—it was spicy, and it was good. Given time to pause, and chew, Kozue thought; she had no excuse, this time, to hide behind; they were not in public and they were not doing anything else, in particular. But what did he want to hear? That she thought he must be making it up, if he said she contributed something truly valuable to the team?

Then again, they had all said that, back in the top of that tower in Paradise, telling her Shadow—telling her—that she mattered to them, that she helped them. But who wouldn't tell her that, if they were trying to persuade her she didn't want to stay there and die? She stared down at the curry, lost in thought.

"Sorry," he deadpanned, fixing her with a look, "but you only get the gentlemanly grace if we're dating, and we both know how well that went."

The chuckle that follows is nervous, if anything.

"It's important," Keiichi insisted. "Dating or not, you're important to me, Kondo-chan. I want to know. You've been avoiding the subject of yourself whenever it comes up and dealing with complements poorly."

Another bite of food gave him time to think, and by the time he had chewed and swallowed, he was ready to move on.

"If there's anything you want to talk about, I think now is the time and the place."
