Our histories are not valueless entertainment meant for mass consumption. They are private sufferings, and the details of our lives are not supposed to be shared with anyone who wants to thumb through a book out of mild curiosity.

If you want to know my story ask me, and I will share what I think is important for you to know. Better that you don't care at all and never seek to find out.

Well, the book wasn't published until a few years after my death, and it seems that in many worlds I am considered to be a work of fiction. They could never imagine that they would meet me, as a real person.

With hostility, initially. It's difficult to remain that way, when the gentleman is simply convinced that he made the whole story up in his head.

That's the failing; it should always be treated as if it were real. It's real to us, after all. We lived it.

Yes, I have tried to explain this to a couple of readers. That I have memories even outside of the events detailed in the book. It only exposes the events of a single summer of my life, and yet it is what I will be judged on. A single summer through the eyes of someone else.

I've grown used to the idea, but I remember well the horrible feeling of violation that accompanying first discovering the truth. I'm sorry that you are having a similar worry. It's a terrible feeling.

Wait half a second...

If we were all "read" here by someone or other, that must mean...

I'm in one of these books lying about here, too? For serious?

I wouldn't say my life is very interesting, at all...

Painful, yes, but... Interesting? I think not...!

Yes, possibly. I wouldn't say my story is all that interesting, either. But what is normal to us is only that way because we lived through it, to someone else it may be very interesting.

Indeed? Well, I think that anyone who finds my story "interesting" rather than just... cringe-worthy, are bloody GHOULS...! I mean, for serious, there's nothing "interesting" abut fratricide my life...!

Well, if you say so. Perhaps you are simply a minor character.

Maybe...? So... who's the star of the story I was read out of, I wonder...?

Heh! Sorry, sir... I don't suppose you'd know that, given that I'm not from your world...!

I'm Parnel, by the way, sir... Parnel Jugson... And you are...?

No, I'm sorry, I have no idea.

Pleasure to meet you, Miss Jugson. I'm Jay Gatsby.
