The taste for solitude and contemplation was born in my heart together with the expansive feelings whose purpose it is to feed it. Turmoil and noise constrain and suffocate them, calm and peace revive and intensify them. I need to retire within myself in order to love. ... I had longed for the countryside, and I had obtained it; I could not bear subjugation, and I was perfectly free, indeed better than free ... [src]

I struggle to understand the words of wise men; revelation is a form of acquisition of knowledge undesirable for the progress of the human race, and yet to know and realize the full meaning of all the words of Rousseau - of Jesus Christ - of Saint-Simon - at times it seems as though it must be necessary. There are mysteries. I do not understand.

Even so, it seems to me Rousseau would have thought a city empty of its people to be a thoroughly unnatural thing.

Isn't the real mystery what we're doing here, Enjolras?

That's a different sort of mystery, I think. I doubt if I can ponder out the answer.

Hello. I've not seen you in quite some time.

But here we both seem to be. Hello, I just arrived, yourself?

The same. Strange, that we should come together. I'm uneasy; I don't know what to make of it. But then, to pretend that miracles are confined to one age can only be human folly.

I hope you've been well.

I've managed well enough, and you?

Much the same as when you left, I thank you.

For wisdom and for righteousness, as always. Or even just for insight - it seems I've been here before.

Who told you that?

A woman; she knew my name. She told me I'd died. Perhaps I have, although I can't remember it.

You trust what she's telling you?

I haven't any choice, knowing nothing. But I see nothing to be gained by lying, either.

If this is an afterlife, I don't know what to make of it. Thus, pray.

I made a mistake. There was- it was Enjolras, but he was different. Not this man. He was here, yes, and he died. I understand now that he is not the same man.

You were here once before, too. Or rather, a version of you. This place is complicated, and I still don't understand it myself. There was a Marius Pontmercy here who fell ill and died, along with Grantaire and Courfeyrac. Enjolras- the other one- and I were the only ones left. Grantaire reappeared, Enjolras was- he- he passed, Courfeyrac returned, and now it seems you two have arrived as well.

Six months now, I suppose. Sometimes it seems like so much longer.
