The taste for solitude and contemplation was born in my heart together with the expansive feelings whose purpose it is to feed it. Turmoil and noise constrain and suffocate them, calm and peace revive and intensify them. I need to retire within myself in order to love. ... I had longed for the countryside, and I had obtained it; I could not bear subjugation, and I was perfectly free, indeed better than free ... [src]

I struggle to understand the words of wise men; revelation is a form of acquisition of knowledge undesirable for the progress of the human race, and yet to know and realize the full meaning of all the words of Rousseau - of Jesus Christ - of Saint-Simon - at times it seems as though it must be necessary. There are mysteries. I do not understand.

Even so, it seems to me Rousseau would have thought a city empty of its people to be a thoroughly unnatural thing.

Unnatural, maybe, but I find a city devoid of it's citizens a be a place to be sincerely coveted. Sadly, this island is not completely uninhabited. Close enough, I suppose. It'll suffice.

Struggle on, there is value in your attempts.

What makes a place, if not its people? What is value, if not to be redeemed against men?

Have you never walked through city streets in the dead of night when no one else is around? Then you wouldn't need to ask.

You think that for something to have value, it has to involve other men? It is of value to you, yourself, and that is what you should seek to acquire first of all. To hell with other men.

There were people. They were sleeping, or hiding - but there were always people. No street in a city is ever truly empty. Damn your fellow men to hell all you like, but there they'll remain - and you belong to them, and they to you.

And this city is no exception.

I often think I could be happy if I were the only person left on Earth. But then there would be no one to drink with, no one to argue with, no one to make love to- and I realise I want solitude, and I want companionship- problematic, indeed.

Wish all you like for solitude, but a man is never truly his own - and you're living proof. You remind me of someone I know.

But sir... If the thing that you value is people's company, then surely there's something to be said for it...? I mean, I think I have always valued having my friends around even when they were NOT there, not really, anyway's... I mean, interaction with other people is how we learn who we ARE, is it not?

I speak only of the value of obtaining knowledge. If there are other things you value as well, then that is your truth, and only you know how to truly fulfil your own needs.

I know who I am even in the absence of people. If you rely on other people to give you a sense of identity, then it is the case that you have not fully discovered who you are yet.

Isn't the real mystery what we're doing here, Enjolras?

That's a different sort of mystery, I think. I doubt if I can ponder out the answer.

Hello. I've not seen you in quite some time.

The same. Strange, that we should come together. I'm uneasy; I don't know what to make of it. But then, to pretend that miracles are confined to one age can only be human folly.

I hope you've been well.

I'm very sorry. I don't recall ever having come here - and I should remember, I think. And yet, you know my name. You must think me very rude - I'm afraid I don't know yours.
