The taste for solitude and contemplation was born in my heart together with the expansive feelings whose purpose it is to feed it. Turmoil and noise constrain and suffocate them, calm and peace revive and intensify them. I need to retire within myself in order to love. ... I had longed for the countryside, and I had obtained it; I could not bear subjugation, and I was perfectly free, indeed better than free ... [src]

I struggle to understand the words of wise men; revelation is a form of acquisition of knowledge undesirable for the progress of the human race, and yet to know and realize the full meaning of all the words of Rousseau - of Jesus Christ - of Saint-Simon - at times it seems as though it must be necessary. There are mysteries. I do not understand.

Even so, it seems to me Rousseau would have thought a city empty of its people to be a thoroughly unnatural thing.

It certainly sounds complicated. I don't understan If you'll be patient with me, I hope I'll grasp it sooner rather than later. Last I remember it was the 27th of December, 1830, and I was in Paris. It was night; and I was crossing from the Place Saint-Michel, going home.

Of course. Have you found somewhere to stay yet?

Ah. Then you don't remember everything that happened. That's probably for the best.

Pontmercy and I have arranged something together, yes. It's very new. I'm not entirely sure what to think of it.

But I've never known an instance in which it was better to be ignorant.

Alright. Good.

Have you heard from Grantaire or Courfeyrac yet? They're here as well. I'm living with them.

Things didn't go very well back at home. But that world is gone, and there doesn't seem to be a way to return to it.

No - no, I should like to see Courfeyrac, very much. That's excellent news. You're li Are you And Grantaire. Did you know one another, before you arrived?

It's difficult to think of it as gone, having just left it. Whatever you do know, I would like to hear it. If it won't trouble you.

Of course. Yes, we did. Courfeyrac helped to keep an eye on my brother- Gavroche?- before. And Grantaire and I were..we were friends.

I imagine this conversation is one that is better had in person, rather than over this network.

I suppose you could call it that.

Would you- perhaps at the apartment? Bring Marius with you, if you'd like. I can- I have tea. Or wine. And food, if you're hungry? [Apartment # here]

He was there, yes. I just- I thought you might wish to have somebody with you who remembers the same as you. He doesn't have to come along, but he is welcome, if he wishes to join you.
