Has anyone else ever tried on their kid clothes?? No? Just me?

The shorts don't button but c'mon, who can resist.

[ooc: imagine Richie's scars on his arms. That's the only difference though, he has actually straightened his hair and managed to locate a fake mustache]

Dunno man, I'm pretty popular.

No, I have a husband.

Yeah pretty much. Gotta watch out for hypothermia if it's like, snowing and shit, but it's not really cold enough for that here anymore.

Maybe you're too popular, and this is your way of appalling a few people and so reducing your social obligations?

If you're telling me you are a woman who has transformed into a man by Station Magic, I might just believe it of you.

I think I'll take the risk and stay inside. I've never liked the cold.

I'm from like 20 years from now and have been doing shit like this since I got here. Hasn't happened yet.

No, just a normal dude. Sometimes he turns into a woman with the station magic, but default setting is guy. His name is Eddie and we're very cute.

I mean, always an option, though washing your hands is a good idea if that's the plan. But honestly, people don't get sick here all that much. We sometimes get a wave when new people show up but once it dies out we're pretty self-contained so new viruses and stuff don't get introduced often.

I cannot make any sense of that timeline.

Why would you do that?
Don't misunderstand, I don't care a jot if you're inclined that way, but what would be the point of marrying him?

That's a relief. My health is troubled enough without stationer diseases to worry about - and I am hardly going to go around with grubby hands!

Normally, I'm like 17 or 18 right now and have been here a couple of years. But right now I'm in my 40s. I have all of my memories of the years between and I've lived here on the station the whole time.

Huh, jot that's a new one. 'Cause I love him? Why wouldn't I?

Just making sure, we never really know what people coming in know about or not.

You are in your forties but you have travelled backwards in time to this point, where you ought to be eighteen?

What has love got to do with it? You are hardly going to have any children.

I'll have to watch out for the cavemen covered in mud, then.

Yep.

That's what marriage is about here. We have no assets or anything, getting married is just kind of...publicly telling everyone 'yo, this one's mine' and having a big party. And we could have kids-if the station made one of us a woman long enough and we wanted to. I think there are at least 3 or 4 kids here born that way.

I mean, dunno about your universe, but where I came from, doctors didn't really figure out that hand washing directly prevented disease until the 1840s so cave man might be a bit far back.

[info]brannenford

That isn't strictly true, I've noticed. You do have assets, you just don't seem to care very much about them. That's almost besides the point, though. If there is no joining of families, which it appears very much that there is not, why would you need marriage at all? You can love someone without being married.

What? I am from 1840 precisely. We didn't go about with dirt on our hands.

Because we love a party.

I am from 1832 and we certainly did, and not just on our hands.

Dude, you don't need a reason to have a party. You can just do it.

I am quite sure soap and water existed in 1832. I remember it well.

I was being... what is the word. Facetious.

Where I lived, most could not afford to warm the water, and didn't have the money to spare on daily soaps. That aside, Richie is talking about the invisible 'dirt'. When your hands look clean but are not really, they are carrying disease.

Alright, that's reasonable.

Where did you live? And do you realise what an absurdity that is, hands that are clean yet diseased?

I mean, yeah we have stuff but we're not...possessive of it. There's very little that we're going to pass on through generations or whatever. It goes where it's needed unless there's sentimentality. It's just symbolic. Saying you've decided this is the person/s you want to spend your life with.

You know what germs are?

Isn't there? People here don't purchase their residences, but they seem to care for and decorate them. Make homes of them, in other words. Why wouldn't they leave them to their children after they're gone?

No, I don't know that word.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]trash_mouth
2022-03-07 02:34 pm UTC (link)
Sure. If the kids want it. But if those kids don't want to live there for whatever reason they're not going to sell it off and profit from it. Once they decide they don't want it, it'd be free for someone else to take up.

They're what make you sick. Organisms so small you can't see them without special equipment. But, most of them can only make you sick if they get into your body through your mouth or eyes or nose or open wounds. Washing your hands helps keep them from getting on things you touch: like your food, or your eyes, or your toothbrush.

There wouldn't be any profit to make, because what value would a house have when thousands stand empty? But it would still belong to the children, unless they gave it up. Some new fellow could not walk in and take it.

That's certainly a very novel theory.

Where you are from, does a woman ever marry another woman?

Yeah absolutely. As long as everyone involved is old enough to know what they're doing, people can marry whoever they want to.

It doesn't seem strange to you that a woman might fall in love with another woman?

In Kordala where I am from it did not happen.

No, it's just as normal as any other combination.

Did it not happen or did people hide it?

I don't know.

How do you tell if it is just the intensity of friendship, and fighting beside one another, or love?

Most of the time, when people say it didn't happen, it meant people had to hide it so they wouldn't be hurt.

I might not be the best person to ask that, the man I married causes all three of those. But I guess it's just...you feel it. You know. Deep down in your gut and in your heart when you stop listening to your head.

I think I love her. I have never felt for a man that way.

I do not think I would be hurt. They would just laugh and call it impossible.

It's certainly worth digging into then.

Dunno, kinda sounds like that would hurt.

She is not here, so it does not matter so much. I just wanted to know if you had heard of it.

No, she and I are fighting a war, we know what hurt is, and laughter would not trouble us. But in Kordala we marry for connections and for children, and she would bring me neither.
