Has anyone else ever tried on their kid clothes?? No? Just me?

The shorts don't button but c'mon, who can resist.

[ooc: imagine Richie's scars on his arms. That's the only difference though, he has actually straightened his hair and managed to locate a fake mustache]

Yep.

That's what marriage is about here. We have no assets or anything, getting married is just kind of...publicly telling everyone 'yo, this one's mine' and having a big party. And we could have kids-if the station made one of us a woman long enough and we wanted to. I think there are at least 3 or 4 kids here born that way.

I mean, dunno about your universe, but where I came from, doctors didn't really figure out that hand washing directly prevented disease until the 1840s so cave man might be a bit far back.

That isn't strictly true, I've noticed. You do have assets, you just don't seem to care very much about them. That's almost besides the point, though. If there is no joining of families, which it appears very much that there is not, why would you need marriage at all? You can love someone without being married.

What? I am from 1840 precisely. We didn't go about with dirt on our hands.

Because we love a party.

I am from 1832 and we certainly did, and not just on our hands.

Dude, you don't need a reason to have a party. You can just do it.

I am quite sure soap and water existed in 1832. I remember it well.

I was being... what is the word. Facetious.

Where I lived, most could not afford to warm the water, and didn't have the money to spare on daily soaps. That aside, Richie is talking about the invisible 'dirt'. When your hands look clean but are not really, they are carrying disease.

Alright, that's reasonable.

Where did you live? And do you realise what an absurdity that is, hands that are clean yet diseased?

Saint-Michel in Paris. It is a slum district, they call it now.

I did not say that they were clean, I said that they looked clean.

That's Gaul - France, yes?

I am not certain how anyone could differentiate between hands that look clean and are, and hands that look clean but are not, unless there is some figurative sense I am missing.

France, oui.

I suppose you can’t, which is why you wash them regularly whether they look dirty or not. I am not the man to explain the exact details.

If you are from a slum over there I suppose you cannot easily keep clean, but that is not the case for most people.

Oh, I don't know, I think a lot of the aristocracy are much dirtier and more diseased than us. Nothing to do with not being able to afford soap though.

I mean, yeah we have stuff but we're not...possessive of it. There's very little that we're going to pass on through generations or whatever. It goes where it's needed unless there's sentimentality. It's just symbolic. Saying you've decided this is the person/s you want to spend your life with.

You know what germs are?

Isn't there? People here don't purchase their residences, but they seem to care for and decorate them. Make homes of them, in other words. Why wouldn't they leave them to their children after they're gone?

No, I don't know that word.

Sure. If the kids want it. But if those kids don't want to live there for whatever reason they're not going to sell it off and profit from it. Once they decide they don't want it, it'd be free for someone else to take up.

They're what make you sick. Organisms so small you can't see them without special equipment. But, most of them can only make you sick if they get into your body through your mouth or eyes or nose or open wounds. Washing your hands helps keep them from getting on things you touch: like your food, or your eyes, or your toothbrush.

There wouldn't be any profit to make, because what value would a house have when thousands stand empty? But it would still belong to the children, unless they gave it up. Some new fellow could not walk in and take it.

That's certainly a very novel theory.

I'm not saying we don't have things. Obviously, we have things. We just view them a little differently. Marriage here isn't a contract about combining families and assets and providing heirs. It's about telling the world you love someone enough to promise to be with them for, hopefully, the rest of your life, and then making that promise to them.

Not a theory. If you talked to Dr. Cuddy or O'Hara, or any of the science folks really, they have the equipment to show them to you.

Yes, I understand what you are saying, I just do not see why anyone would bother with it in that case.

That's an even bolder claim, but I'd like to see them, if you're right. I'll ask them.

Tradition I guess, sentimentality. I like being able to call him my husband, and wearing the ring he gave me. And it was literally just a party with a ceremony, why not?

Give it a go, it's kinda neat. But it's why the medicine here is what it is. Once we realized that it was these microorganisms that made us sick we could study them. People identified different ones that caused different illnesses. They made tests so if someone had symptoms that could be any number of diseases they could figure out which one it was and made medicines that would fight those specific ones. Made vaccines that could keep you from getting sick in the first place. And it's a lot easier to prevent something when you know what causes it.

You are a romantic at heart, then. I have been in love, I know what that is like.

Astonishing. I thought first that you were teasing - suggesting that because I am from long before you, I go about with muddy hands. The microorganisms must be in the air, too, aren't they?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]trash_mouth

Yeah, pretty much.

I do tease a lot. But not always. I grew up here, got pretty used to people coming from all over in time and place but sometimes I forget to explain the why. They are, they're all over really. Most of them are harmless, or our bodies are strong enough to fight them without getting sick. It's just some that cause illness, and in different ways-some you can inhale, some have to be introduced through saliva, some through blood contact. So even if a blood contact germ is in the air and you inhale it, you won't get sick. But if you had a crack in the skin on the side of your fingernail and came in contact with the blood of someone who carried that disease, then you could catch it.

I'm pretty sure the guy who first introduced the idea in hospitals died destitute and in a mental ward. So. Probably not. But you could maybe work toward like, showing the end effect. Tell them cleaning with antiseptics and good soap gets rid of bad miasma or something. Same effect without having to convince people of a whole new medical theory you have no way to prove yet.
