I don't mean to be a bother, but is there anyone here who is knowledgeable about domestic magic and might be able to advise me?

I need a spell to get ink stains out of clothing. I've been getting by with an all-purpose dirt repelling charm, but it's not designed for this sort of problem.

In a not entirely unrelated matter, does anyone have experience with raising magical children? If you do, and you're not the sort of person from the future who thinks it is good or natural for children to be rude and hate their elders, I would like to ask you a few questions in private.

Quite so, and tailors make a good living out of it all, but I'm doing my best not to hurry the damage along.

I appreciate that you made that offer in a very kindly spirit, and so I'll thank you and not be offended by it, but it's really not an appropriate thing for a gentleman to do. Casting aspersions on my magic is rather impolite, though. Magic is in my blood; I'm from an ancient wizarding line.

i am casting nothing on your magic. we live with the gods now in the stars and so strange things will happen. people grow old or young here outside of what is normal, or they grow wings, or men become women, or they will change bodies. if you were to change your body with someone who is not a wizard, they will have your blood and your magic and you will not. and then your clothes will get dirty and you will smell.

If such a terrible thing as that were to happen to me, the dirt and the smell would be the very least of my troubles. I expect it would kill me. I try not to think too much about all the bad things that could possibly happen to me here. It's better to try to be cheerful than always worried and afraid, I think.

i do not think you would die of it for it has not killed anyone else.

if you cannot keep clothes clean at the moment, what are you managing to do? are you eating?

I daresay I would, but that's a particular unpleasantness that it's best not to get into. Dying would certainly be the more honorable thing. My father would If you believe it is your gods doing all this, you might ask them to be kind to me, and then we need never put it to the test.

I say, I'm not an invalid or anything of that sort. My clothes are perfectly clean. The dirt-repelling charm I mentioned works well, and I conjure up water to wash with every morning which plenty of muggles don't It is only black ink on a white shirt that is causing me trouble. If I can't salvage it, I can discard it, as I have others. It only seemed a little wasteful. I eat at the restaurants sometimes, or have fruit and sandwiches. I know how to make them, and to make tea, and I used to share a big dormitory at school so I know how to keep things tidy and keep the fires going so that the cold doesn't get in.

you may ask them yourself, for they are here. frigga, thor and loki live on the first wheel.

what is a dormitory?

Really? Can they send me home?

It is a long room with lots of beds so that a group of people can sleep there. I used to share with eleven other boys my age. We'd get in trouble if it wasn't kept orderly. It is strange at first if you are used to having your own bedroom, but it's ordinary at school so everybody gets used to it.

they cannot, for i think we would all be home by now if they could.

a longhouse of sorts, i see.

do you learn to be a seið-man at your school?

Then they aren't really gods, they just have more powerful magic than Ah. That's somewhat disappointing.

Yes, something like that, except that a dormitory is part of a much larger building.

You might say that. The British magical tradition isn't quite the same, but there is likely some spellwork in common, and we do learn the runes. Can you do any magic?

my sister's husband describes my cooking as magic, but this is because he cannot cook and would probably manage to burn water. but no, i know no magic.

Ah. Never mind it. Cooking is still rather an impressive skill! What is your favourite food to make?

bread, for you must knead it and knead it and it is very good when you are annoyed for it lets you imagine that the dough is who you are annoyed with.

stew is also good for i can let it cook away while i knit

a feast is good to eat, but if my sister has her way, i am usually the one who is cooking and so i do not always get to feast with everyone and must wait until all the food is prepared

i like to learn all the new foods that everyone makes in their diners and cafes and use the spices and herbs that i do not have at home as well. i like tacos, and the little cous-cous grains with vegetables and different meats all through it, and also gummy worms. but not together.

are you hungry?

Freshly-baked bread is marvellous, and it is far too long since I had a decent stew. I cannot say that I'd care to try worms, though. I like meat pies, or plum pudding, or roast chicken. It must be horrid not to be able to join in with the feast. Do you at least save some of the best food for yourself?

I suppose I am rather hungry. Talk of food will do that.

gummy worms are not actual worms, they are what people here call candy and they are very sweet. and aye, the cook gets the best treats, as is only right.

i have fresh bread and stew here if you would like some.

i am astrid

Ah. In the way that sugar mice are not real mice?

Pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Astrid. My name is Black. Your offer is very kind, but if I could presume upon your hospitality - might I bring a little boy along? He is my nephew, and he is only seven, so he won't eat a great deal, and if you haven't much left then I'd rather he was the one of us to have a good meal.

If I ever find sugar mice here, I will share them with you! And yes, I can fly over. It should not be too difficult to find. I shall bring a gift for you.
