I don't mean to be a bother, but is there anyone here who is knowledgeable about domestic magic and might be able to advise me?

I need a spell to get ink stains out of clothing. I've been getting by with an all-purpose dirt repelling charm, but it's not designed for this sort of problem.

In a not entirely unrelated matter, does anyone have experience with raising magical children? If you do, and you're not the sort of person from the future who thinks it is good or natural for children to be rude and hate their elders, I would like to ask you a few questions in private.

why do you not simply wash the clothes with the stains and then you will not need such spells

I don't do that sort of thing. I'm a wizard, not a washerwoman. Besides, clothes wear out if you're always boiling them and scrubbing at them. I know there's a spell. A girl at school used to do it for us. I just don't know how to do it myself.

aye and children grow and people damage their clothes too, it is the way of things.

i do not know of any spells but i am going to be washing clothes this evening. you may come along and see how it is done if you wish. it would do you well to learn the washerwoman skills for you may not always be a wizard in this place. things have a habit of changing.

Quite so, and tailors make a good living out of it all, but I'm doing my best not to hurry the damage along.

I appreciate that you made that offer in a very kindly spirit, and so I'll thank you and not be offended by it, but it's really not an appropriate thing for a gentleman to do. Casting aspersions on my magic is rather impolite, though. Magic is in my blood; I'm from an ancient wizarding line.

i am casting nothing on your magic. we live with the gods now in the stars and so strange things will happen. people grow old or young here outside of what is normal, or they grow wings, or men become women, or they will change bodies. if you were to change your body with someone who is not a wizard, they will have your blood and your magic and you will not. and then your clothes will get dirty and you will smell.

If such a terrible thing as that were to happen to me, the dirt and the smell would be the very least of my troubles. I expect it would kill me. I try not to think too much about all the bad things that could possibly happen to me here. It's better to try to be cheerful than always worried and afraid, I think.

i do not think you would die of it for it has not killed anyone else.

if you cannot keep clothes clean at the moment, what are you managing to do? are you eating?

Charms are done with wand movements, and an incantation. The sort of thing I did when I helped with the pocket realm you created for me.

Not always, but most of the time. It's certainly easier if it's Latin.

I know nothing about magic, but does it need to be a specific domestic magic charm spell thing, or can you adapt a spell you already know? Like, if you know one for sorting things into groups, could you rewrite it a bit to sort the inky shirt into two groups which are "ink" and "shirt"?

There's nothing wrong with hating your elders if they're shocking awf Is this about your nephew?

That sounds like the sort of solution a professor of magical theory would come up with! It's possible. That is one of the ways that new spells are invented. I could try, although that's quite advanced magical work and I'm not sure if I will get it right.

Partly. My nephew isn't being especially rude, though. That part was just to improve the quality of the advice by filtering out those who'd object to it.

Ha! It'll be fine, it's just an experiment. Hack the spell to bits in theory first, and then stick it back together again. You said up there that it's wand movements and incantations, so maybe work on the incantation part first, break it down into its component parts and see what does what in the spell, and I guess the movements would follow once you know what you're saying? Or are the movements more important than the incantation? Do you use the same movements for different spells? Record it all as you go, so you know what's been tried before.

As long as it's not the "people from the future" bit that you're objecting to.

Are you certain you haven't studied magical theory? The incantations are Latin. They don't have to be. I have a cousin who works physical spells in cuneiform. Latin is just much easier to use, because of the roots of the British tradition. If you're modifying a spell, sometimes it is only a matter of changing some case endings, but other times that doesn't work and you need to reorder the incantation, or change the words entirely. The movements have to be precise, but they're similar for related spells. But as I said, this is senior-level work, and I was only in the fourth form back home. I know the theory, but I've never tried more than very minor modifications. I suppose the worst that can happen is that I further ruin the shirt, though, so it is worth trying. My Latin is quite good.

Some people from the future are splendid, but they don't always understand cultural matters. I can tell you about my nephew, but I'd need your word of honor that you will keep it to yourself, no matter what you think of it.

I don't know Latin as a language, per se, only how it's used in taxonomy. And you could get other dirty things if you wanted to practice first. I wouldn't recommmend taking all kinds of different samples from the shirt to work on, given that the whole point is to be able to keep on wearing it afterwards.

I won't tell anyone anything.

Didn't you learn it at school? No matter. I shall see what I can do.

Very well. I am the one looking after him, and he is seven, and I do not have much experience with children that young. I don't really know what to do when he is upset about missing his mother, or when he behaves badly because of it. I don't want to be harsh, but I also don't want to encourage him in it. If he were a younger boy at school we'd distract him, or tease him a little if he kept it up, because it just isn't manly - but seven seems too young for that.

I specialized in biology, not languages. I only know Spanish, English, some Japanese and a bit of Russian.

Does he miss his mom a lot? When I went to school, there were other kids who missed their parents. They were told to talk about their mom and dad, or to write to them regularly, or things like that.

You seem distressed. He abandoned you, I suppose. It's no excuse for hysterically flinging about accusations. I would ask you to find just one instance where I have treated anyone differently based on the colour of their skin. You will not. It's an extremely nasty muggle habit. Our diplomats have to I can only imagine that you may have confused me with someone else, as I have never had any dealings with you before today and so you cannot possibly make any pronouncements about my character. That, or you resort to baseless slander whenever you are not deferred to.

Either way, I have no wish to quarrel with a total stranger. I ask you again to let me alone.

Have you forgot your words already? I thought humans didn't start losing memory until they were much older than you are. I shared only eighteen words with you and you jumped to the conclusion that I treat my children poorly because I am not magical. If Sirius thought that I was going to be a bad fit for his children he would not have made the request that I raise them before his death. I love these children as if they were born from me, and give them everything they want and need, and have guarded them with my life on more than one occasion.

So it was you who baselessly slandered my person, first. I simply deduced from your ignorance that it was willful.
