WHO: Q and Q Junior
WHAT: Q has a little chat with his son. (AKA: The current in-game Event draws to a close.)
WHEN: Late night
WHERE: The rooftop of the Grand Library, at least to start with. With these two, there's no telling where they might end up though.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Junior stared out at the hubbub of the city beneath him from his perch on the roof of the Grand Library. He was perched on the railing on the outermost edge, legs hanging over the side and feet swinging idly to and fro. If someone were to look up and spot him they would probably think he was contemplating jumping to his death, or some other ridiculously mortal thing. Junior smirked at the thought and debated having someone glance up for precisely that reason but decided against it. If they did, they'd feel the urge to call someone to 'help' and then he'd have to find another spot in the city to get away from the bipeds. As he was growing rather fond of this spot, he didn't want to have to do that if he could help it.

So instead he stayed perched on the edge and simply willed the mortals below not to look up at him. As far as they were concerned, he wasn't there. The building was, but the urge to look up at the roof wasn't something that even occurred to them. It was a simple manipulation and, all things considered, a very mild use of his abilities compared to what he'd been up to as of late.

Of course, now that some time had passed since Junior had begun randomly altering the personalities of those around him, he was growing bored of even that rather ingenious little trick. That was the main reason he was on the roof - the very place he'd received inspiration the first time around - in the hopes of coming up with something else to do to ease his boredom. Because while he hadn't changed that many people back to normal just yet, he had a feeling his father was going to start pushing the issue soon. And if Junior was going to turn things back into the boring display of relative normalcy that they were before, he was going to have something to keep him occupied after the fact.

He just had no idea what. "It's really rather ridiculous," he muttered to himself. "All of the power I can possibly fathom at my fingertips, and I can't come up with anything worthwhile to do."

"That's because you're not looking in the right places."

Had Q been lingering there this entire time? Perhaps he had, perhaps he hadn't. It was difficult to tell when one could just move themselves from one place to another in the blink of an eye -- well, faster than that, but there wasn't a proper human term for it and no one had ever asked how fast, so there was yet to be a need for Q to find a way to articulate just how instantaneous the abilities of a Q were. Regardless, he was now standing behind his son, expression neutral...for the time being.

Junior stifled a sigh as he semi-rolled his eyes while turning his gaze in the direction of his father. "So where should I be looking, then?" he asked simply before his gaze switched back to the people moving about on the streets below.

Such petty, unimportant little specks in the grand scheme of the cosmos, yet every single one of them moved with such purpose. Such a determination that they mattered. Really, if Junior weren't bored with all of them he might almost find it endearing in a pathetic sort of way.

"I suggest bringing something interesting here and was told not to. I tried coming up with a way to amuse myself and even then they settled into the change with gusto. Honestly, these beings are much easier to goad in Aunt Kathy's time. The ones here are such a let-down." The comments were all mostly unnecessary but Junior felt the urge to complain to someone. As he wasn't quite sure just how Death felt at having been made mortal for a while, he wasn't willing to go to her. So who else did that leave, besides his father?

No one, that was who. Unless he wanted to go to one of the very lesser-beings he was grousing about, of course. Which he didn't.

"Definitely not in the direction that involves altering the courses of bipeds lives," Q said firmly. "Just because the Continuum isn't here to reprimand you for your actions doesn't mean I'm going to sit by and let you toy with whoever and whatever you want. Need I remind you, son, that part of being a Q is maintaining the balance in the galaxy. Uprooting the bipeds in this city, turning them inside out and dropping them back on their heads is not balancing--that's not even tipping the scales in the wrong direction! That's picking up the whole thing and tossing it into a Cistarian Fire Nebula."

Q didn't like having to be the one to tell him these things and missed being able to let the elders and Kathryn Janeway handle such lectures. Fatherhood was not something he was suited to and he was stumbling, quite horribly, through it in a place where he was without anyone to offer him guidance or assistance.

For an omnipotent being with all the answers, Q was quite lost.

And here it was. The dreaded lecture. Honestly, Junior didn't think what he'd done was that awful. He'd made certain no one was actually killed, hadn't he? Not even when some of the versions had been much more colorful than the rest had he allowed them to actually out and out end another's life. Even in the cases of the vampires, he'd made absolutely sure that they only feasted on the locals.

But no. Of course that wasn't good enough. Not for his father, or the rest of the Continuum. It was never good enough, not really. Every so often he'd manage to get it right, and then he'd get bored and decide to have fun again and before he knew it, they were right back where they'd started.

It really was becoming quite a point of frustration for him.

"I was just having fun," he retorted. The low tone of his voice, the hint of a pout, it was all very reminiscent of the teenager that he was - at least in comparison to his father. However he knew that the tactic of trying to act surly wouldn't really work, at least not for long, so instead he heaved a sigh he didn't even really have to make in the first place and twisted a bit so he was facing the other Q fully while still balancing effortlessly on the railing upon which he was perched.

"What would you suggest, then?" he questioned, doing his best to keep the frustration out of his tone. He was sure he was probably failing quite miserably but, then, he was getting used to that being the norm. "If I can't bring beings here to amuse me, and I can't toy with the ones already present, what can I do? Sit around and wait to get let out of this biped-filled prison when I haven't even done a thing to deserve being stuck in it in the first place?"

And that was really the crux of the problem, wasn't it? The feeling of impotence - of not being able to just flicker off on a whim - it was worse here than it had ever been on Voyager.

"It's all fun and games until someone ends up in a petry dish." A snap of his fingers and the small, circular glass case was in his hand. He turned it over in his palm, admiring the shiny, un-reflective surface as if it were the most amazing thing he'd ever seen. Shooting a glance at his son, he brandished it, waving it in the air almost tauntingly. "Would you like to visit it again? I can easily make reservations."

Punishment. Sometimes actions had consequences. Yes, he'd paid attention to that when Kathy told him such was needed. He was trying. He really, really was. Kathy would be proud of him for the effort, right? Oddly enough, he wished she was here.

"...what about trying to help the bipeds here with their problems, hmm?"

Junior blinked, torn between being slightly annoyed and wary. He was being threatened with the petri dish again? Really, didn't his father have anything else to use against him? Not that he was going to say any of that, of course. He barely even let the thought flicker through his mind before it was replaced with a decided feeling of vague amusement.

"Help them?" he echoed, lips curling a bit into a ghost of a smirk. "You want me to help the bipeds." He paused, waiting for the punchline of the joke, or at the very least a 'No, of course not'. When he received neither, Junior blinked again before all but shouting his next statement.

"You were the one who introduced Starfleet to the Borg and those were the bipeds with real potential. Yet you want me to assist the ones here with their problems?!?" He was, quite simply, beside himself over such a thought. "That's... that's ridiculous! Why should I help them? I don't see you helping them."

Then he fell silent and into a very obvious huff complete with a scowl to match.
