WHO: John Winchester & God
WHAT: Emmy wants to have a conversation with John. John hopes he hasn't backed himself into a smiting corner.
WHEN: January 24th; Evening
WHERE: The Roadhouse
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

It would not have been an exaggeration for John to say that he was scared shitless as he stepped into the Roadhouse and quietly sought out a booth to settle down into. The thought of having a conversation with God because he'd threatened one of her kids, when he knew all too well just how angry a protective parent could get, was enough to leave him feeling sick to his stomach. A protective parent with the ability to blink him out of existence was not something that he really wanted to think too hard about. So as he slipped into the booth, John waved over one of the waiters immediately and ordered a whiskey. Beer wasn't going to cut it for this conversation. He needed something to not only steel his nerves but take away some of the barriers that might hold himself back.

He was willing to wager that God would appreciate honesty more than blind obedience, and if he was wrong, well, he would feel less pain if he was a bit drunk.

Hesitating as the waiter asked if he wanted anything else, John glanced across the booth before turning back to the waiter. What in the world did you order for God? Did he even bother? After a moment of silence, John waved him off with a quiet assurance that if the person joining him wanted anything, that he could always come back later. Better to wait and let Her order for Herself than guess wrong.

Almost instantly, Meri had lowered her crossbow with one hand and, with the other, drawn a very familiar looking gun. Aiming it at John, she cocked the hammer back and arched an eyebrow. "If you're really our grandfather," she said in a hard tone, "you know what this is." She waved the Colt about a little, never quite taking her aim off of him though. She wasn't normally in the habit of carrying the famous weapon around, but when going into one of Loki's strongholds in search of her brother, it helped to be prepared for just about any contingency. And while the gun might not work on Lucifer, there was no reason to believe it wouldn't work on Loki if she ever got the chance. "You come anywhere near my brother," she continued coldly, "and I'll use this gun," she wriggled it a bit more, "to put a bullet right between your eyes."

Then she slid her crossbow up her shoulder before stepping closer to Jack, reaching out to help support him. There was a sense of urgency as she grasped hold of him, as though assuring herself that he was real and wasn't still trying to kill her. Her side ached but she ignored it. She was just glad to have her brother back.

Meri kept the gun in her hand, using it to motion toward the door once Jack was ready to leave. "You first," she indicated to John. No way was she turning her back on this... whatever he was.

"That would be a waste of a damn bullet," John said, his gaze shifting between Meri and Jack, not really sure what to even say. It wasn't as though he was armed. He didn't have anything on him that could prove who he was, none of the usual gear necessary to manage that, so he couldn't exactly protest without coming off like he really was the shifter she likely expected him to be. "But I get what you're saying," He said, holding his hands out so that she could see that he wasn't at threat before following the directions.

Sending him out first was a good move. Not only did it allow them to both keep an eye on him, but it made him the first target if they did end up getting jumped. If he got killed, it would only give the two of them more time to recover and fight back. John felt that swell of pride again even as it was mixed with the sort of anxiety that was welling up in him at the idea he was stuck here.

He'd left things so badly with his boys back there. If he died here... God, what in the world would they even think?

Jack leaned against Meri as they made their way out, doing his best to keep contact with her as much as possible while not limiting his ability to use a weapon if necessary. He'd swapped the sword for his angel killing blade. They both kept one of the more powerful weapons on them usually, not wanting to be taken by surprise by Lucifer or Loki.

Ruthless as it was, he liked Meri's strategy of sending "John" out first. Maybe he'd get killed and they wouldn't have to deal with him any more. He didn't care what happened to the man. He just wanted to get out of here and get Meri out safe. His devotion had turned once more to his sister, to the exclusion of all else.

"Stop talking," he told John roughly. "I'm not gonna buy that you're him, so talking just makes me more inclined to slit your throat."

How they managed to make it out without running into anyone, Meri didn't know. She wasn't going to question it though. Instead she just directed John in the way to go to get to where she and Gabi had decided to leave the getaway vehicle. Sure enough, rounding the corner, Meri sighed in relief at the sight of the Impala. "Hey, baby," she murmured as she helped Jack to the car, leaning him against it. Then she spun to face John, raising the Colt with one hand and pulling a flask from her pocket with the other.

Flipping the lid off with a flick of her thumb, she splashed John in the face with holy water. When he didn't immediately begin to sizzle, she put the flask away and pulled a knife from her belt. Still keeping the Colt trained on him, in case he had any bright ideas, she held the knife - hilt out - for him to take. It was pure silver. She nodded her head toward his arm, knowing he'd know what she was asking he do.

John had expected this. They knew the drill, and as the knife was held out to him, he took it without a hint of hesitation, dragging back the cuff of his sleeve to expose his arm and slicing a thin line across it. Holding it up for Meri and Jack to both get a good look at, John flipped the blade it his hand and held it back out to her.

"I doubt either of you are satisfied that I am who I look like, but that's at least enough for you to know that I'm not going to eat either of your faces off," He said, raising a hand to wipe off his face and slick the water back through his hair.

"It's a long story," He said, figuring that even attempting to outline the process which had brought him to this point was rather useless at the moment. "So unless you want to stand around here yapping until someone catches us, I suggest getting to at least a safer space before I try and explain myself. And feel free to bash my head against something if you have to absolutely make sure I'm not being controlled by someone else."

"We don't know that," Jack said coldly. "Knowing you're not a demon or a shifter doesn't mean you're not a threat. In fact, I'd rather you weren't John Winchester. At least if you're something else, we can gank you." He shot him a look. "Considering your stellar job handling things the first time around, I figure we have two weeks tops with you here before we're all fucked." He didn't care about being nice to the older man, even if he was family in the most technical terms.

He was just about to settle down, it was obvious in his body language, but then John spoke again and before the words were even done, Jack had a knife firmly against the man's throat. "Don't," he said quietly, the words cold as ice, "try to order us around. Don't even think about telling us what to do or acting like you have any right to speak to us. We're not your little soldiers. You already got them killed or good as. So don't come into our lives and try and act like you have any idea what we need to do. You want to make it here, you shut your fucking mouth. Are we clear?" Maybe he was being harsh, but everything that had happened had him on edge and John's presence wasn't helping.

He released John and went back to Meri, relaxing against her. Or as much as he ever relaxed. "We waiting on Gabi?" he asked. "Didn't hear any explosions since we headed out, but that doesn't mean she's not around." He wasn't about to leave his younger sister behind if she was there. The thought of her winding up like he had made him feel sick to his stomach.

Actually, all knowing he was human really did for Meri was tell her that she could use any gun she wanted on him instead of having to resort to the Colt. Even if the idea of John Winchester getting shot by that gun was deliciously ironic in a twisted sort of way. Still. She slid the Colt back into its holster while taking the knife from him and re-sheathing it as well.

She also didn't really react when Jack turned on John. She knew Jack wasn't going to actually kill him, mostly for two reasons. The first being that he'd spoken first. When Jack gutted you, he didn't really give you warning. That was her style, not his. And the second reason being, of course, that he wouldn't dare get blood all over her car. Mostly because she'd beat his ass some more, if he did.

So rather than jump in the middle of what she knew was Jack mostly laying down the rules while blowing off some steam, Meri turned her attention to the alley nearest them. "Nope," she replied, "Not Gabi. She handled the diversion. I didn't want to risk her not being able to double back and start taking out guards too." The corner of her mouth twitched upward into a smirk that made one thing absolutely clear to anyone who knew her.

Whatever was going to happen next, was going to be hilarious as far as she was concerned.

"You know," a voice chimed out, the words coming out in a slow drawl, "just because something tries to follow you home, kids, doesn't mean you need to keep it." And, with that, Meg stepped out of the shadows, casting a smirk in John's direction. She still addressed Jack and Meri when she spoke but her gaze never left the hunter.

"Especially with all the trouble he's liable to cause." She paused, offering him a slight mockery of a wave. "Hiya, Johnny. How's it hanging?" Then she looked back to Jack and Meri. "Well?" she asked pointedly. "Let's go, kids. We wait around much longer, we might as well give them a damn map back to our place."

She grinned once more. "Gramps can ride in the backseat with me."

There were a lot of things about this place that didn't make any sense. An angel working with a pagan, Sam's current state, the fact that everyone seemed to be blaming this situation on him, but as Meg come into view, John's mind rebelled even more solidly than it had at anything else. A demon, a demon was standing not more than two feet from his grandkids, and they weren't making any move to eliminate her. With Lucifer in charge, the logical conclusion would be that any demons they came across were enemies, more so than usual, and needed to be done away with, but this one was talking as if she was the one here who belonged, as if she had more right to exist than him in this situation.

"Horribly," John said, casting a long look at Meg as he mentally cursed not having armed himself with something before heading out to the bar to have a conversation with God. "I've just been told by a demon that I get to ride in the backseat of my own car."

Casting a glance back at Jack and Meri, though, John could tell that he was already on thin ice. Jack had lashed out. Meri looked like she was barely restraining herself from taking him out and being done with it, but, for once in his life, he figured that biting his tongue would probably be the better strategy to take. At least until they were in a less vulnerable position.

"It's not your car," Jack said, not even looking at John. "It's Meri's." Then he gave Meg the closest thing he had to a smile at the moment, a weak tired gesture that still somehow showed his relief at seeing her. "We tried, mom," he said with a shrug, "but we couldn't seem to shake him off. Figured it'd be less hassle to keep him around." He wasn't going to lie. The reason he used the affectionate term for Meg was absolutely to push his grandfather's buttons. Not that he didn't adore his surrogate mother, but he rarely used that name for her. It was a special occasions and every other Sunday thing. "You're right though. We need to get the hell out of here before-"

He was cut off as some of Loki's followers came from the same direction they had. At the same time, an arrow whistled through the air and hit the ground in the middle of the group, causing an explosion that wiped them out, just far enough away from them that there was no risk to them or the car. Jack laughed. "How sweet," he said. "You brought a date. Did you guys leave anyone at home? Nevermind. Let's just get out of here, before your husband decides to see just how many creative uses he can come up with for arrows." He respected the hell out of Clint, but really. When were they ever going to need a boomerang arrow? He glanced over at Meri. "I drive, you give cover fire?" As much as his sister was possessive over Baby, he also knew she loved hanging out the window and shooting things. And he did love making her happy. Plus focusing on driving meant staving off a breakdown that much longer. Still, he'd leave it up to her.

Meg snorted, moving toward the back door of the car as Jack spoke. "Oh, I'm sure Adam's stalking about the place, just waiting to give the two of you a look and lecture as soon as we're in the clear," she replied easily enough. Eyes sparkling, her gaze turned to John about the same time Meri was handing the keys over to Jack to drive. "Relax, John," the demon said with an easy smirk as she opened the door and slid inside the car. "I promise, no heavy petting on the first date."

As her bemused chuckling wafted out of the backseat, Meri was already sliding into the passenger side in the front seat, her crossbow loaded and in her lap, her gun in her grasp. As a shot rang out, Meri's gaze jerked up. There was a group of six or seven men, charging directly at them, weapons in hand. Meri cast a sideways glance at her brother then toward the backseat.

"And we've officially worn out our welcome. Let's take this party on the road already." With that, she pressed her back against the passenger's side door and slid out the window until she was perched on the edge of it, her feet still in the car while her upper half - and her gun - was out. Taking aim, she shot three of the advancing minions without missing a beat, more than ready to take them all out if she had to, if it meant giving Jack a clear path to get them out of there.

John felt like he was going to be sick. That was about the only reaction he could have right now that wasn't liable to get him shot. As he swallowed against the bile that was rising in the back of his throat, fixing Meg with a long, irritated stare because, honestly, of all the people there who actually seemed to believe he was himself, why did it have to be her, he did the exact opposite of what his body wanted him to do. He followed instructions. He was useless out in the open. He didn't have a weapon much less any way to defend himself without one, so as he slid into the backseat of the Impala, he sank down to give everyone else the room that they might need to protect them as they fled.

There were plenty of questions that had been raised in the minutes that they were standing out there. What the hell Meg was doing not at Lucifer's side. Why in the hell Jack had called her mom of all things. what in the world was meant by her husband. And where Gabi could have disappeared to if she wasn't coming back with them. They were all questions that John wanted to ask, but now, now, didn't seem the best time.

So instead, he bit his tongue on most matters, turning his gaze briefly to Meg, his eyes narrowed, before saying simply, "For the record, I still don't trust you as far as I can throw you."

Jack slid into the driver's seat as everyone got settled, shutting his door and starting the car as Meri started shooting. He drove quickly but not recklessly, though the speed was definitely on the edge of batshit insane. Both he and Meri were very good at defensive driving. "They following?" he asked his sister, as he took a sharp turn and then another, trying to throw off anyone who might have been in pursuit. Though he was focused on the road, he still took note of John's comment, his expression hardening into one of cold disapproval.

"Nobody gives a single fuck what you think," he said, his tone hard. "Now try not to drive anyone else over to the dark side. I know it's all you're good for, but hold back for a change." He didn't care about John's stupid prejudices. Meg had proved herself time and again. And though he knew the day could always come when she would turn on them and he'd have to kill her, he wasn't looking forward to the possibility. "If he gives you too much trouble back there," he told Meg as he accelerated into another turn, "feel free to gag him."

Before too long, they were back home, or what counted for home these days, and he was throwing the car into park. "Home sweet home," he said softly as he got out of the car, leaning heavily on the door as the adrenaline abruptly faded, leaving him shaky. "You guys can sort this out. I'm...I just need to..." He trailed off. He didn't even know what to say to finish that sentence. He just knew he couldn't deal with John's bullshit when his head still felt like a mess and he was wrecked by what happened. "I just...can't."

While Meri had purposefully not given John a weapon - particularly as she still wasn't completely convinced he even was John - Meg had no qualms about it. That might seem strange, considering she was the only one in the car who wasn't related to the guy, and he wasn't exactly her biggest fan to boot, but frankly she wasn't all that worried about him shooting her. He could, of course, but he'd only wind up facing Jack and Meri's combined wrath if he did. And she'd like to think not even John Winchester would be that insane.

Either way, though, he deserved to be armed, as far as she was concerned. Not to mention, if something happened and their backs got against the wall, he was a damn good shot to have in their corner. So it just made sense. Even if she couldn't resist goading him a bit when handing over the weapon.

"Don't worry about us, Jack," she replied, tossing John a wink before pulling a gun from her waistband. "I'm sure we can find ways to entertain ourselves back here. You just get us there." Then she held the gun out for John to take, tossing him a wink before pulling another gun out with her free hand and half turning in the seat to make sure they weren't being followed.

As it turned out, neither she nor John ended up needing the weapons for the ride, but Meg didn't insist on getting the firearm back when they arrived either. Instead she was half-starting toward the doors to the safe house only to stop suddenly when Jack trailed off. With a concerned look that was hidden with indifference, unless you really bothered to look, she turned back to the rest of them. By default, her attention slid to Meri because, where Jack was concerned, very few made a move without making sure Meri was on board. That was how you wound up shot.

Meri, however, looked for her part as though she was barely hanging on. Extremely pale from blood loss, her entire side soaked with blood, and with at least a few broken ribs and probably a concussion, she wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders. In fact, she simply leaned up against the side of the car, her silent and pensive gaze locked onto the ground in front of her and her hand reflexively opening and closing into a fist and back again. Meg sighed softly then drew in a sharp breath.

"Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but standing around out here all night really isn't doing it for me. Jack, Meri, you both need to get checked out and I already said Adam was looking for you. Now get your asses to triage." She paused, her tone hardening even more. "Move it."

Almost instantaneously, Meri seemed to respond to the order. Snapping out of whatever shutdown her mind was attempting to have, she nodded her head once, sharply, then grabbed hold of Jack to help him - and, by proxy, also help herself - get inside. She cast a sideways glance at John, brow furrowed slightly as though finally seeming to realize he was actually standing there. "It's not right," she stated in a low, somewhat numb-sounding, tone. "Out of anyone from your time who could show up here, why'd it have to be you?"

And with a shake of her head, Meri turned back to her brother and the task of getting them both inside to relative safety. Meg, meanwhile, sighed once more then turned her own attention to John. "I will say one thing about you Winchesters. When you have your issues, they are definitely some damn issues," she muttered. Then she tipped her head toward the building. "Come on. Let's get the reunion over with already. Then we need to see about tracking down Gabi and getting you chipped."

It was like being dropped into a bad noir film, one of those ones that didn't make any sense until the last ten minutes, and as Meg handed him the gun, John felt his head swim at the unsettling nature of everything that was going down around him, things that might make sense in the minds of everyone who had grown up in this backasswards reality, but not to those who had just shown up here midway through intermission. But even as the desire welled up in him to tell Jack that this was far from his fault because he didn't have any fucking clue what was evening happened much less a tendency to make things 'go dark side' as it was, John just stayed silent as Meg dished out orders and his grandchildren left to go and get themselves patched up.

"Meddling supernatural entities?" John asked, eyeing Meg for a long moment before heaving a sigh as he stashed the gun he'd been given in his waistband. "Or the utter determination that we're right, no matter what evidence is shoved in our faces?" The question was an off-handed one, not really too serious, but he really didn't feel up to fighting right now. It was clear he didn't have any fucking idea what was going on, so may as well go with the flow until an opportunity to make it upstream presented itself.

"You guys took your sweet time," Gabi chimmed as she eyed the rag-tag crew, lifting an eyebrow at her brother and sister's injuries before narrowing her gaze towards Meg and John. "Okay. Anyone want to get me the dets before I hit the automated security? What's fat and scruffy doing here? You guys did check to make sure he didn't have Loki's magical signature, right?" Because shapeshifting pagan gods reacted like humans to pretty much everything you threw at them.

"C'mon, Mer," Jack said quietly, "let's just...go do what Meg said." He was tired and he wanted to get checked out, then drag his sister back to their room and not let go of her. He missed the days when he could have turned to Zoe for comfort after something like this, but with his wife dead his sisters were all he really had. He sighed at Gabi's words, shaking his head. "Not now, Gab," he said. "Just...not now." Later, when it didn't feel like he'd been shoved through a meat-grinder. Then maybe they could talk about John and what this meant and why the fuck he'd showed up out of everyone they'd lost.

Another engine cut off anything else and a motorcycle came to an abrupt stop next to the Impala. The man who got off had a bow and quiver on his back, and when he pulled his helmet off, he looked much older than the group, apart from John, with a rough edge to him. "Come on, firecracker," he told Gabi, as if knowing what she'd said. "Let them get seen to. We can handle the new guy. How about you help an old man with his gear." He took off the bow and quiver, holding them out to her. "The new explosives work like a charm. Got a few ideas for some new designs to run by you later."

He moved over to Meg, keeping a wary eye on John. "Glad y'all got out okay," he told her, kissing her half because he wanted to and half to make it clear that there was absolutely someone John would have to go through if he wanted to take down Meg. "So what happened, hellbitch?" he asked his wife, the term affectionate where it had once been hateful, once he was sure Jack and Meri had left. "The kid didn't look good."

Meri didn't even really acknowledge Gabi, much less respond to her. Instead she simply helped her brother get through the front door of the building. Part of her wanted nothing more than to get them both patched up then go to their room and not leave until they were fit for duty again. Whenever that might be. Another part of her, though, wanted to go back outside, beat the ever loving fuck out of her grandfather, then get back to killing as many evil things as she could find before the blood loss she was suffering brought her down once and for all. She would do the former, of course, instead of the latter, but that didn't keep her from partially considering it. She was tired, so tired of everything, and almost losing Jack - even if it had always been a possibility, they'd never come quite this close before - had taken its toll on her. So rather than being her normal, mouthy self, Meri was uncharacteristically quiet to the point of subdued. For now, at least.

Meg knew, of course, that neither twin would stay too broken for long. Sure, parts of them would always be shattered beyond repair, but Jack would bounce back because Meri and Gabi would need him, and Meri would bounce back because Jack and Gabi would need her. That was just how the twins seemed to work. They were able to push beyond losses that were unfathomable, deal with disappointment and heartache in stride, because they both were too stubborn to let the other one down and neither would even consider leaving Gabi alone. Ever.

Her thoughts about the kids - which, contrary to what John probably thought, she did actually care for them - were cut short by Clint's arrival. There was relief shining in her eyes even as she smirked at him, returning the kiss before glancing over her shoulder at the direction the twins had gone. With a stifled sigh, she looked back to her husband. Which, yes, that was still pretty out there - her being married - but Meg wasn't going to pretend otherwise. Especially not with John Winchester around for her to annoy with that fact.

"Looks like Loki got tired of asking Jack to joined him and forced the issue," she replied, tone low but not so low that those present couldn't hear her. She just didn't want her voice trailing inside to where others might also overhear. Not everyone fighting on their side needed to be in the know about everything that happened. It was easier, that way.

"He damn near got one-up on Meri before she managed to beat his head in enough to get him back. And then, grandpa of the year over here showed up." Tipping her head toward John, her attention slid next to Gabi. "He's who he says he is, kiddo," she assured the youngest Winchester. Then the corner of her mouth lifted upward. "But if you want to run him through some tests, I'm sure as hell not going to stop you," she tacked on as she stepped through the front door of their headquarters... and immediately went still, waiting for Clint or Gabi to break the seal of the Devil's Trap she was standing on, so she could continue further.

John officially gave up on trying to figure this place out. John hadn't really paid attention to the prior mentions of a 'husband' in regards to Meg. They didn't exactly compute in his brain, and there was more than enough to grasp in these few seconds than he really had the ability to wrap his head around. But seeing the man standing in front of him, looking more than perfectly human, John's mind tried to revolt even more. This was wrong. It was one thing, this place having lines drawn where you couldn't kill someone just because of what they were, but there was something almost... bestial about the idea of marrying a demon. Which was made all the more odd by the fact that the man standing in front of him...looked like a sane individual.

"You're not that old, Clint," Gabi chimed, disrupting John's train of thought as she shouldered the bow and quiver, flashing Clint a playful grin. "Did they? Man. I wish I could have seen it. I bet Loki's troops all have a lovely layer of seared skin now. I'll put these back," she said, sparing a glance to John before turning her attention to Meg, breaking the Devil's Trap to let her pass through, trusting that Clint would put it back into place once she had, before heading back towards her lab set up. "I'll get things in place to chip Gramps. Once he's stopped bugging out, bring him on back."
