Jack slid into the driver's seat as everyone got settled, shutting his door and starting the car as Meri started shooting. He drove quickly but not recklessly, though the speed was definitely on the edge of batshit insane. Both he and Meri were very good at defensive driving. "They following?" he asked his sister, as he took a sharp turn and then another, trying to throw off anyone who might have been in pursuit. Though he was focused on the road, he still took note of John's comment, his expression hardening into one of cold disapproval.
"Nobody gives a single fuck what you think," he said, his tone hard. "Now try not to drive anyone else over to the dark side. I know it's all you're good for, but hold back for a change." He didn't care about John's stupid prejudices. Meg had proved herself time and again. And though he knew the day could always come when she would turn on them and he'd have to kill her, he wasn't looking forward to the possibility. "If he gives you too much trouble back there," he told Meg as he accelerated into another turn, "feel free to gag him."
Before too long, they were back home, or what counted for home these days, and he was throwing the car into park. "Home sweet home," he said softly as he got out of the car, leaning heavily on the door as the adrenaline abruptly faded, leaving him shaky. "You guys can sort this out. I'm...I just need to..." He trailed off. He didn't even know what to say to finish that sentence. He just knew he couldn't deal with John's bullshit when his head still felt like a mess and he was wrecked by what happened. "I just...can't."
