At first, when the sound had gone away, Noah had taken to sleeping in the same room as his parents. It was too quiet at night and it had scared him more than he'd liked to admit. However as days had turned into weeks, the boy had grown as accustomed to such a thing as was possible and had taken to sleeping in his own bed. Granted most times he would wake up in the middle of the night and still seek out the comfort of his parents by crawling between them or curling up at the foot of the their bed. Every once in a while, however, Noah would sleep peacefully through the night, in his own bed, just like he used to do back home.
The night before Father's Day was one where he'd actually woken up, startled, in the middle of the night. The nightmare of the bad people who came into his house had been plaguing him more and more as the stress of not being able to express himself had begun to wear him down. This time the nightmare had consisted of the bad people taking away his voice, too, so he hadn't even been able to call for his Daddy as he'd done when it had really happened. However, rather than rush to the other bedroom and crawl into bed with his parents, he instead forced himself to go back to sleep in his own bed, in his own room. He knew the next day was a special one and he didn't want to risk sleeping too late - a very real possibility with the steady breathing of both his Mommy and his Daddy on either side of him.
Before he fell back asleep, however, he hoped with all of his might that sound would return by morning. Not because he was scared (even though he was) and not even really because of his nightmares. No, he wanted sound to return so he could actually wish his Daddy a Happy Father's Day instead of just having it written out on a card that he'd made for him a few days prior.
And lo and behold, when Noah woke the next morning, he found that his wish had come true. Sound had returned! A fact which was obvious by the birds chirping, cars whizzing by, and even the low murmur of others through the walls as they began to wake and realize sound was back as well. Sitting upright in bed, his brown eyes widened and a large smile stole across his still-sleepy features as he peered around.
"Yes!" he exclaimed, making sure not to keep his voice too loud but rather to simply test it out. Sure enough, he could hear himself, and without delay he jumped from the bed and dashed out of his bedroom. His bare feet were muffled against the carpet as he ran directly to his parents' bedroom and opened the door. Peering inside, he smiled when he saw they were still asleep and tiptoed quietly into the room.
Once he was at the foot of their bed, however, he couldn't contain his excitement anymore. In a voice that was giddy with happiness, he exclaimed, "Mommy! Daddy! The sound is back! Wake up, wake up, wake up!" And then he jumped up on the foot of the bed and began to bounce merrily on his knees to ensure that his efforts to wake them both weren't wasted.
