Entry tags:character: emerson dewitt, character: jack harkness, location: harkness house, thread: complete, |week: 02, ~date: 07/july 16

Who: Jack and DeWitt
Where: Jack's home
When: Week 2, Tuesday, Evening
Why: An old bottle of scotch has to be drunk, and talk of a brand
Warning: Jack Harkness, mentions of slavery. TBA

Ianto had taken to his room in the 'tower' or at least that was what Jack was calling it. It was their time away form one another, Ianto would go to his room and Jack, well...he didn't really have much to do. After thanking Emerson DeWitt for his help he thought, the man was good and funny. He would like to meet this man. He suspected he would be good looking. Drinks with a good looking man? That would be right up Jack's alley.

After Ianto bid him good bye, if only for a short time and closed his door, Jack went down to the cellar. Unlike some vampires he preferred a bed to a coffin and not to be underground. He had black out curtains in his bedroom if he forgot his watch, which he hadn't so far. Jack grabbed the scotch. It had been given to him by on old lover as a parting gift. It only served to keep those memories that Jack wanted gone. He would never want to share the drink with Ianto, it would be liked sharing Ianto with his ex-lover, in some round about way.

He took the scotch back up to the den, before getting two tumblers. Yes he had promised Ianto that there would be minimal spilling and hardly any mess. He was going to keep that or so help him he was sleeping on the couch that night. Jack heard the door and sauntered over to get the door.

"At the time I was young and I was stupid. First fae I had ever met and I was hooked. I don't quite remember when the relationship started, if you could even call it that." Really it could be called several relationships what with all the breaks they had. "But it was not enough. I wanted something more. The sex was still good, but was sex without substance? Soon even his blood became boring." Jack slumped back into his chair.

"John gave me that bottle, as a sort of going away present. He said we would open it when we never met. For several years after that I had hoped it would be true. That he would waltz into my life like last time. Then I can to hate the bottle and tried to get rid of it numinous times, but...I never could."

Suddenly the liquid in the tumbler glass seemed all the more potent. If Emerson were a poetic man, he might've mused how he felt like he was drinking memories that would never be entirely forgotten. Luckily for the both of them, he wasn't outwardly poetic.

"You sure you want to finish it now?" he had to ask. Honestly, Emerson thought it for the best considering the tumultuous past Jack had with this John guy, but he couldn't be the one to make that decision. People had to really be ready to move on from something, so it was only right to ask.

"Yes...yes I do. It is the last remnants of the that life. I have Ianto now." he smiled like a school with a crush. He took another sip of the drink. "Ianto is nothing like John. The sex is even better, the blood well maybe not as good, but the connection is there. We have this emotional connection that I have never felt in my life." He down the last of his drink and sat the glass down.

"We can just lay for hours, talking and there is no sex. I don't feel cheated. The sex is even better now that there is this connection." he smiled dreamily. "Ianto is the best thing to ever happen to me. So yes I want this damned scotch gone." He nodded at it and poured another glass. It seemed he was a one man drinker tonight.

Emerson downed his in honor of moving forward. He wished he could share the sentiment himself, but at least he could be here for someone as they took that step. And the damn scotch was fucking fantastic too.

"Pour me another. I'll be your witness. Leave that shit behind, and make sure you don't fuck up what you got now," he added with a grin. Crude advice, but very valid.

"That's the spirit." Jack said, leaning up, a bit shaky, and poured DeWitt another glass. "To letting the past lie in the past." He downed his again and poured another. They were almost 3/4 of the way through.

"Now tell me something about yourself, before I spill more of my life's failures. I am sure you have loved and lost someone in the past or maybe a spell gone array? Or I bet you ran naked through a crowd, making the school girls hearts all aflutter."

"My failures are buried a little bit further in that bottle, my friend," Emerson replied with a laugh that didn't quite reach his eyes. He shook his head, taking yet another very, very long drink. He didn't know what he bothered. It wasn't like his whole, sordid story wasn't public fucking knowledge anyway.

"My life, however, is a very public record, if you're actually interested. I'm like a folk legend around these parts," he attempted to joke.

Jack sobered slightly. "I did not mean to offend you. I just want to know more about you. That is what friends do, they share things with one another." he gave a lopsided smiled. "And I would rather learn about your life from you. I have lived for over a century. But what keeps me going is the friends I have had on the way. Their memories become part of me." He laughed sightly.

"I knew this Doctor once, funny as hell and sarcastic. You would think he never liked me, but eventually he did. We became best of friends. When he died...well it was hard, but I had the memories of our time together. He will always live on in my heat." Jack took a drink after his emotional spill.

"No, it's not that. I'm not offended," Emerson assured him, feeling kind of bad for being such a stuffy ass about it. What did it matter anyway? It wasn't like Jack couldn't just google the damn event or check the local records.

"It's not that I don't like having friends. I'm more social than I'd like to be, honestly." He got along with Eterna, for fuck's sake. Emerson scratched the back of his head with his free hand. Jack was spilling so much, aided by the alcohol or not. He kind of liked the guy and his husband/slave anyway. "It's a whole family died in a tragic demon-summoning accident kind of thing. Not my best party story, you know?"

"Wow." Really Jack had not looked up much about this town, other than were it was and about houses and Ianto's coffee shop. He liked to know the history from the people not the world wide web.

"I lost my family too." He scratched the back of his head. "Not like yours. Mine didn't go out with a boom." Then he winced. "Sorry bad choice of words." He felt bad for getting this started so he took another drink. "Have you ever had sex with five people at once?" He grinned.

Emerson laughed. Not that his family issues were anything to laugh at, but it wasn't hard to focus on Jack's choice of words and subsequent attempt to change the subject. Oddly enough, orgies were a welcome change of pace, the witch thought as he took another sip of his drink.

"Can't say that I've ever been that popular. You gotta tell me the story, minus the gory details," he answered, leaning forward.

"Well I was in Monaco. This has to be at least, fifteen maybe twenty years ago. I was in this little bar on the outskirts of town." he took another drink and sat the glass down. He tended to talk with his hands.

"There were these three girls sitting at a table and I started to chat them up. They were nice girls. Well two of the were lesbians, but they still like to fool around with men. I came out and told them I would love to help them with that. One thing lead to another and we had the bar tender and a waiter join us." He sat back, smiling. "Let me tell you, they taught me things I have never seen in my life."

Emerson had entertained the idea that life could get that good sometimes. Most men did from time to time. Some women at that, he'd wager. He found himself laughing at Jack's story, possibly in disbelief.

"How the hell did you convince them? How many women respond to 'I can help you with that'? You, sir, are either gifted, or a liar," he mused, his crooked smile indicating that he at least half-believed the man.

It had not been an exaggeration. All true. Most, if not all his sex stories were true. He felt no need to hide his past sex life. Maybe that was just Jack, eager to tell a good story.

"The bar was closing, no other entertainment and believe it or not. I a that charming." He chuckled. "I ended up dating the bartender for a while. Damn what that man could do with his tongue." Grinned. "But all that has changed now. I have all I need and more." He sometimes missed the multiple partners and trying new things with new people, but he had Ianto now and that trumped all over experiences.

"Is it weird?" Emerson asked. He wasn't trying to be an ass exactly or make Jack feel uncomfortable, but he was curious. Not a lot of men and women who were interested in that sort of lifestyle were able to find happiness with a single person in a committed relationship. "I mean, going from six person orgies that you can apparently get at the drop of a hat to a relationship. It sounds like a pretty drastic lifestyle change." He thought about that for a second.

"Though I guess if you can get two lesbians and half the bar into bed with you, drastic changes wouldn't be quite so hard either," he added afterward with a laugh.

Jack laughed and nodded. "I would be lying if I don't say that sometimes I miss it. I like sex, but I also like connection. I like my life now, for once I am happy to be with someone and they want to only be with me." He took a drink from his glass. "I love Ianto. I love everything about him, and I am not saying out sex life is boring, far from it. But it is different. Like I said about John. We tried new things, sometimes with many partners, but that connection was not there. That," He pointed at DeWitt. "Is why I won't go back to that life. I can't. I would rather leave my watch on the table and walk out into the sun than go back to being carefree."

"I guess why go out for multiple connections when you have one meaningful one right here," Emerson answered simply, taking another drink. He himself had never been good at forging meaningful connections, at least not permanent and meaningful partnerships like the one Jack had with Ianto. He wondered if he was a little bit jealous of that ability, but he decided he was better off in the long run without it.

"But I'm happy for you, man. Stick with it. Best you can since it makes you happy," he continued. "And it clearly makes him happy too."

"Thanks." Jack downed the last of his drink and leaned back. "I try to make him happy. Everything I do is for him. I know that might make me sound weak or, what is that word....whipped. But I don't care." One edge of his mouth moved up into a half smile.

"And I am glad that he is happy. It has not been easy for both of us. I having to play the master and Ianto having to play the dutiful slave. It is really not so black and white. There is a lot of grey in there. We make it work. Out in the world we are one thing, in our home. There is where we are truly ourselves."

"Grey's a place more people could stand to live in," Emerson remarked honestly. People so often clung to one extreme or another that truth became lose and both ends. "People rarely realize that truth is somewhere in the middle, somewhere in the grey." The witch frowned thoughtfully. Fuck, he'd forgotten how philosophical he could get when he was drinking.

"Your scotch has a way of making me think I'm some kind of philosopher," he cracked the joke with a grin, trying not to serious up the place too much.

Jacked laughed and poured himself some more of the scotch. "It does seem to be loosening both or our tongue. Maybe mine more than yours." he grinned and took another drink of the rich liquid.

"I love talking to you. You say it how it is and you are not alarmed about Ianto being more like my lover than slave." In reality it was more like they would husbands than lovers. "You don't stand for bullshit principles."

"Got enough for a refill for the philosopher then?" he asked, holding up yet another empty glass. He'd be lying if he said he hadn't drank like this in a while, but it was the first time he'd had someone besides Gretchen to talk to afterward.

"I stopped standing for the bullshit a while ago," he continued. Ten years ago to be exact. Well, a little more than that now. "World is the way it is, and I know I don't have the power by myself to change that. I'm not sure I'm much of the crusader type anyhow, but I can control how I look at people and how I treat them. People here might not think much of that kind of thinking, but they know not to push me. I do things my way, and those who tend to have a problem with that soon learn they're just gonna have to ignore me."

Jack pour him another glass. The bottle had one maybe two glasses left then he could toss the bottle and be rid of John once and for all. He didn't usually drink this much. He was a talkative man when he drank, and in Ianto's presents he was a horny drunk.

"I just don't understand it. I know some people like being subservient and omnipotent, but why subject people to humiliating things when you could have just at much fun doing other things. I would never make Ianto do anything he didn't want to. Some people." He grumbled.

Emerson noted the state of the bottle, smiling faintly as he realized the last symbol of that John guy would be soon be gone. It took a lot more to erase someone from the mind and the heart, though. Obviously Jack had Ianto, someone who meant the world to him, so maybe it wouldn't be so hard for him.

"That about what it is. Everyone likes different things. Everyone's a different way. But the thing is. Everyone's a person. Everyone has minds and can give stimulating conversation. Fuck, talking to Ianto was less painful than talking to half the political bastards in this damn town." He paused, remembering Piper. "I've got a girl now that keeps me on my toes better than most of the damn covens that have tried to recruit me." The fact that he'd said girl and not slave didn't not go unnoticed by the witch.

Jack threw around the term slave, because for decades that was all they had been to him. Rightfully they were still people, like DeWitt pointed out, they still had minds of their own. It was not until Ianto that Jack saw the world changing, realizing, as he had as a young man in the camps, that slaves were humans, that he use to be human.

"Ah a girl." He smirked. "I bet she can keep you on your toes. I knew this girl once, feisty little thing, called me all sorts of names. They all didn't hurt but it was the fun of having that banter with someone. That was, oh lord," he laughed. "That was when I was still human."

"And just how long ago was that?" Emerson asked, genuinely curious as to how old Jack was and also how long he'd been losing his daylight talismans. He loved to hear stories about how things were, listen to the changes in everything over the years. He doubted he'd be able to experience the changing of an era; he didn't have much of a wish to prolong his life beyond the human course of things.

"Unless it's rude to ask a vampire his age?" he added with a chuckle.

"Maybe for a woman. I doubt you would be asking that, uh, women her name started with V, no E. Anyway, yeah do not ask a woman her age unless you want to his punched in the balls, and I have had that happen twice." He chuckled.

"I was born in 1911, in Maryland. I was turned in 1944. Technically, I was force feed blood to heal me then I was killed shortly there after that. I am technically 102 years old. Physical age of 33. I was just shy of my 34th birthday. I keep track of my age pretty well. I like celebrating my birthday, not the day I was turned. Think that keeps me human."
