The sign read, Closed until further notice on order of the Health and Safety Department, and was posted in the center of the door. "Huh." Ben scratched his head as he read the sign again. It hadn't been there Sunday, at the close of his shift, nor had he noticed it the day before when he'd walked past. "That's odd."
Tuesdays were normally quiet, uneventful days for Ben. He'd get up sometime mid-morning, make himself a quick breakfast of toast and jam, and if it was nice out he'd eat on the balcony. Then he might shower, or depending on what time he had to go to work, sit out on the balcony for awhile with his guitar and lyric sheets. All in all, Tuesdays weren't bad days.
Today, though, was something out of the ordinary. He'd run through his normal routine, and at twenty to twelve headed down the street to the small pub he worked at. There was nothing out of the ordinary about this; he'd done a version of this same routine nearly everyday for almost a year.
Maybe the universe is trying to tell you something Goldstein, Ben thought as he read the sign again, just to make sure he hadn't missed anything. He hadn't. Maybe it's time for a change.
Mentally shrugging, Ben headed down the lane and towards the Tube station. He wasn't one to think overly much about things, or lament on his loss of a job. He'd find another one, or one would find him. That's how things had always worked, and he had no doubt that they would continue to do so.
He paid the fare for the Tube and rode a few stops before getting off. He never bothered to read signs; wherever he ended up would be where he was going. And if he ever got lost, he could always Apparate back home. Magic was brilliant that way.
It turned out that he'd inadvertently ended up at Charing Cross, and it was only a short walk to the Leaky. He entered the pub, which was still pretty busy even though it was past lunch. Beginning of back to school shopping, Ben realized nostalgically. There were quite a few students and their families, not to mention a mosaic of other characters.
"Huh," Ben thought, studying the crowd and the fact that the staff seemed a little on the small side to handle such a sizable amount of customers. Mind made up, Ben made his way up to the bar and when he'd caught the matron's attention said, "Are you hiring, by any chance? Only I just found myself without a job this morning, and it looks like you could use an extra set of hands." He smiled, impishly as one friend had described it in the past. "I tend bar too."
