Summary: Remembering the dead

It was hot today, impossibly so for Scotland, and yet the sky was so dark to be almost black, but not a drop of rain was falling. Jamie had asked Aunt Hermione and Ted for help in setting up a small area. He didn't know how they had managed, but it looked amazing. They had created an altar, low on the ground with plants and flowers of all sorts that covered the altar itself and all around it. As Ben was playing his guitars, the notes of amazing grace gently moving through the muggy air. A queue of people walked to the altar, placing pictures of their relatives. It was a strange assortment of faces. The Malfoys had placed a picture of Narcissa, standing near his grandmother's; Uncle George's photo was sitting next to Marcus Flint's, and Rolf and Sandy were waving at them. There were many others, but the portrait of Dumbledore, smiling at the crowd took the centre stage.

"You can start now, my boy," the portrait said when the queue ended.

James couldn't help but chuckled. "Yes, Sir." The sound from the sky made him look up, and he saw Fawkes flying over the lake. Where the hell had that bloody bird been all of this time? With no answer, he looked back to the crowd.

"As our former Headmaster just said, we should start, but not just with this memorial, but with a new way of life. Today, we remember the many people we have lost, people who've sacrificed their lives, more than once in some cases, to make our world safe, to ensure that all of us can live in freedom. We are here to remember how truly brave all of them were, how committed they were. We're here because we can't forget. We have ahead of us hard times. You've made sacrifices and you'll be asked to make more. Every single one of us will be tested beyond our imagination, but we can't give up, because if we do, our loved ones will have died in vain. We will stand united, facing whatever Riddle wants to throw at us, but I know that you will rise to the challenge and in the end, we will be successful."

He turned to the portrait. "It's been an honour knowing you, Sir. You've change my life in ways I never thought possible," he said, smiling to the old man. "I know I speak for many people, but especially for Severus and Alastor, when I say that our lives were much better because of you." He turned to the crowd again. "I wish we had portraits for all of the people so we could tell each and everyone of them how special they are, but I believe that they knew it all ready, they knew it in their hearts."

James looked at the pictures again, eyes stopping on his grandmother, and he took a deep breath before speaking again. "We cast spells around this memorial so it will be preserved. We understand that people will want to visit in private, but please don't come here at night. Also clear it with security when you leave the castle. We want everyone to have a chance to be here, but we want everyone to be safe, so please stick to these rules. On behalf of Severus, Alastor and myself, I thank you for being here to honour our dead. Thank you."

Marlene/Alastor

Marlene hadn't cried for her sister, for her mother, or for her grandparents; she hadn't cried for friends; she certainly hadn't cried for herself, but now, as she watched the portrait smile at everyone like this was a party, her throat tightened and she could barely speak.

She turned toward Alastor. He looked tired or maybe it was getting to him as well. Instead of asking him, she hugged him, kissing his neck in a gesture of affection. "I'm going to miss him," she whispered.

When she pulled back, she looked up at him, because her heels had been replaced by one inch heels, because she might like stilettos, but she wasn't going to patrol on them. "I miss you, too."

Alastor put an arm around her waist when she hugged him and kept it there. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and murmured, "I know...on both counts."

The days since the attacks had been long and tiring and showed no signs of letting up for a while yet. They had the people inside and safe, for the time being. Now they had to worry about keeping them that way, keeping them happy enough they didn't revolt, getting supplies organised and accounted for, putting out rules and regulations that would likely be unpopular but necessary to keep going until they could get a better sense of the world outside the walls.

Listening to Jamie give the portrait the combined thanks of all three of them, he had to wonder again if he was up to this task, despite his resolve to see it through for his former commander.

"It'll get easier," he said quietly, though if that was to reassure her or himself he couldn't have said.

Despite everything, she felt grounded in a way she had never felt before. She leaned against him. "You know this monogamy thing you like? Still strange, but it's okay with you." She might be open and willing to talk about emotions, but being in a relationship was still very weird. "It's better than okay, despite how bad things have gotten."

She kissed him and smiled at him. "And you have your family back. My sister is back. I think that's an amazing thing."

Marlene put an arm around him and decided that she liked being able to be like this, just touching. "It will get easier, love. I'm more concerned on how you're doing at the moment."

Alastor smiled as she leaned against him. Or, at least, it was a smile for him. one would have to get close to see the corners of his mouth were actually upturned a hair's breadth. "It's not so bad," he teased quietly," this whole relationship before retirement thing.

"I suppose this is one of those silver-linings Lupin is always on about? The world sucks, but in compensation the school gives us our family?" Alastor shook his head. He wasn't about to start contemplating karmic reward and such. But, he couldn't help thinking maybe there'd been something to the religion of his youth.

"I'm all right," he replied, running his hand soothingly up and down her arm as they stood there. "Tired, but so is everyone. It's going to be a long few weeks until we get settled and have enough information to be going forward, I think. We need everyone to do their part and we have to be seen to be doing ours."

She kissed the corner of his mouth, when he smiled. "No, it's pretty good. I'm still shocked. Relationship? I always thought it was an insult," she joked. "Really, though, I'm really okay. With everything that's going on, I thought I'd get restless, I always did, but now, I'm fine, just tired." She smiled again. "You make things better."

Marlene chuckled. "I suppose so, but it's more than just getting them back. You seemed to be doing better with Cal. Did you have a chance to talk to him?" Not that she'd seen them engage in extensive conversation, but Callum had stopped sulking and he was being useful.

"I never thought that you wouldn't do your part. I'm worried that you do the part of three people. No overworking yourself, do you hear me?"

"I'm glad you're all right with things." He squeezed her gently. He'd worried she would get restless as well, worried she'd realise this wasn't what she really wanted, he wasn't enough. Alastor would likely still worry a bit in the back of his mind. But, he needed to hear this right now. Needed her.

"We talked. Full sentences and everything." He chuckled. "Did you realise I'm actually a month older than my big brother, now? I hadn't until he mentioned it with Baron last night. Not that it seems to make much of a difference. He'd gone from hating me right back into elder brother mode."

Alastor shook his head. "More like four, when you think the man whose portrait was still just giving orders did the work of about a dozen. But I meant the others have to see the three of us working, now most importantly. I will try not to overwork."

"You sound more surprised than glad," she said softly. "If there was something wrong, I would talk to you, love, but there isn't. I'm ... good, and I really hate talking about relationships," she said, making a face. "Is this how you feel when we talk about emotions in general? Because it really sucks, but I want you to know." Marlene turned towards him, wrapping both arms around him. "I want you to know how much I love you, and how much this makes things better."

She smiled. "Full sentences? I'm impressed. That must be strange for you, but I can see why not for him," she said. "To me you're my Alastor, I don't think about those five years or the eye. So how long before he warns me off? Your brother is the type to ask him about my intention, I hope you know that."

She sighed again. "I know what you mean, and I'm not disagreeing; I have a problem with killing yourself."

"Maybe I am a little," he admitted. "You made a big change for me and I just don't want you to regret it." He laughed softly when she scrunched up her face. "If it's a sort of itchy, I'd rather be slogging through a battlefield up to my elbows in the bodies of my enemies, kind of feeling, then, yes. That's exactly how I feel when emotions in general are discussed. But, you need to know I love you, too. Even if I don't like talking about it much."

Rolling his eye, he nodded. "Yes, full sentences." He shook his head with another quiet chuckle. "I'm aware and I think you've got some time while he's trying to give me room to establish leadership."

Leaning over, he kissed her cheek softly. "I'm not going to work that hard, I promise."

"You shouldn't be. I'm not going to regret it, and if it becomes unnerving, we will talk long before either one of us can regret it." She nodded. "It's really horrible, isn't it? I suppose I can put up with it for you since you've putting up with me for so long." Marlene smiled. "I know you do, love."

Marlene snorted. "Right, that means a week or two, tops three if he gets distracted by his dragons."

She knew that the definition of hard was a fluid one here. "All right; I won't bother you as long you as I can have you in bed for a full five hours every night."

"I'll hold you to that." It wasn't ever going to be something he did voluntarily, he thought, but this talking about things was getting a little easier each time he had to do it. Alastor smirked. "I have, haven't I," he teased.

"Maybe a month when you consider how many green assistants we've given them. He may not leave that camp for weeks, preoccupied with his babies. Especially with Baron out there now."

He shook his head. "All right, five hours. Barring emergencies," he stipulated, a little disbelieving that they were bargaining over sleep time!

"For two people who hate relationship, we're doing pretty well," she said, satisfied. "We even have the lack of sex down pat," she said, chuckling. "Give us another few weeks, and we might be too tired to talk to each other. It's like being married."

She burned, burying her face against his chest as she giggled. Most people would probably assume that she was sobbing, but that was better than seeing her giggle. "I shouldn't be happy that he won't be around."

Marlene raised her head. "Emergencies have to be life threatening. Lack of milk for the tea is not an emergency."

"I never said I hated relationships. Just talking about them. But, we're not doing too badly," he agreed; then he laughed. "Well, I do believe we've been accused of arguing like an old married couple before. It would be appropriate."

Toying with a lock of hair, he tugged it gently. "No, you shouldn't be. He might be a pain in the arse about us, but I like having him back."

Alastor blinked. They really were bargaining! "Lack of milk for tea, now. Whatever actions are necessary to obtain that milk in the future may be."

And now he was worrying about food stores already!

"Fine you hate talking about them, and I hated everything about them," she said, not hiding for a moment how she felt. "But we're not married. We're living sin," she said, grinning. "Your brother will hate it."

Marlene smacked his arms. "Oy, leave my hair alone. Besides, he'll be away from me, not you. I'm sure you'll see him and Baron. I want you to have your family back, but I know he doesn't like me."

She rolled her eyes. "I was exaggerating. I don't really think that you will skip sleep because someone wants milk with their tea. I'm just saying that you should remember what's really important."

"I'm sure he will. Not that either one of you will give any inch, am I right?" Alastor chuckled and shook his head before tweaking her hair again just to be obstinate. "He may not like you, but he'll have to get used to you. You're stuck with each other so long as you both have anything to do with me."

And that wasn't a question or a suggestion. Alastor didn't have time to play games of 'he loves me best' between his brother and his best friend -- or girlfriend? Not that labels mattered much other than 'ally' and 'enemy' at the moment. Too few of the former, too many of the latter on the other side of the walls.

"Never exaggerate with a former Ravenclaw. We take all details very seriously." He sighed in mock defeat, however. "I do remember what's important. It's only been a few days. Wait until we've been in here at least a couple weeks and are settled, hm?"

"How can I possibly give an inch? We're either living in sin or married, and unless this is your proposal, then we're living in sin and he can suck it up," she said, smiling, and then she hugged him again. "I won't argue with him, love. I'm not going to put you in a positions that you need to pick sides. Your brother can be an arse, but he wouldn't do that to you either, so you're fine."

Marlene snorted. "I'll remember that, and I'll start making a list of what's important." When he went on, she didn't even hesitate. "No, that's unacceptable, and before you start with me, two weeks of about four hours of sleep per night will leave all three too weak to be effective. In case of an attack, you'd be useless, if not a weakness. You need to sit down with Severus and Jamie and work out a schedule where all of you get five, possibly six hours. I'm not saying tonight, but soon. You will need it, Alastor."

"I think we'll let you get used the relationship part before marriage proposals are considered," he teased, hugging her back. "Thank you."

He couldn't help rolling his eye as she continued. "I meant wait a little while longer before we start arguing over what's important. Things that won't be important in a couple weeks are extremely important now and the reverse will also be true. We're not the only ones who need a more routine schedule and we're only just starting to get that to the others," he added under his breath. "We're not going to kill ourselves overworking. I'm just saying we need time to work that out on top of everything else we have to work out.

"And if we're going to argue about this, a memorial is not the place to do it."

"You just made my point," she said, grinning, before growing serious. "Don't worry about me and your brother, love. We're adults, and we do have one thing in common: we both care for you."

Marlene shook her head. "We're not going to argue; you don't need that. You need someone to remind you that it's not just overworking. It's the fact that everything s resting on you three and being overworked could end up doing more harm than good. I've reminded you, and you're not stupid. I'll just remind you again when it's time to go to sleep," she told him, clipping the corner of his mouth.

"Also remember that the only person who can bench a leader and that's a Healer, and I know a few." She took a deep breath. "I love you, baby. I just don't want you back in a bed recovering from hexes, or worse, but I understand you need to work, and certainly no arguing." She hugged him again. "Go work. Come and find me when you need me."
