Summary: Remembering the dead

It was hot today, impossibly so for Scotland, and yet the sky was so dark to be almost black, but not a drop of rain was falling. Jamie had asked Aunt Hermione and Ted for help in setting up a small area. He didn't know how they had managed, but it looked amazing. They had created an altar, low on the ground with plants and flowers of all sorts that covered the altar itself and all around it. As Ben was playing his guitars, the notes of amazing grace gently moving through the muggy air. A queue of people walked to the altar, placing pictures of their relatives. It was a strange assortment of faces. The Malfoys had placed a picture of Narcissa, standing near his grandmother's; Uncle George's photo was sitting next to Marcus Flint's, and Rolf and Sandy were waving at them. There were many others, but the portrait of Dumbledore, smiling at the crowd took the centre stage.

"You can start now, my boy," the portrait said when the queue ended.

James couldn't help but chuckled. "Yes, Sir." The sound from the sky made him look up, and he saw Fawkes flying over the lake. Where the hell had that bloody bird been all of this time? With no answer, he looked back to the crowd.

"As our former Headmaster just said, we should start, but not just with this memorial, but with a new way of life. Today, we remember the many people we have lost, people who've sacrificed their lives, more than once in some cases, to make our world safe, to ensure that all of us can live in freedom. We are here to remember how truly brave all of them were, how committed they were. We're here because we can't forget. We have ahead of us hard times. You've made sacrifices and you'll be asked to make more. Every single one of us will be tested beyond our imagination, but we can't give up, because if we do, our loved ones will have died in vain. We will stand united, facing whatever Riddle wants to throw at us, but I know that you will rise to the challenge and in the end, we will be successful."

He turned to the portrait. "It's been an honour knowing you, Sir. You've change my life in ways I never thought possible," he said, smiling to the old man. "I know I speak for many people, but especially for Severus and Alastor, when I say that our lives were much better because of you." He turned to the crowd again. "I wish we had portraits for all of the people so we could tell each and everyone of them how special they are, but I believe that they knew it all ready, they knew it in their hearts."

James looked at the pictures again, eyes stopping on his grandmother, and he took a deep breath before speaking again. "We cast spells around this memorial so it will be preserved. We understand that people will want to visit in private, but please don't come here at night. Also clear it with security when you leave the castle. We want everyone to have a chance to be here, but we want everyone to be safe, so please stick to these rules. On behalf of Severus, Alastor and myself, I thank you for being here to honour our dead. Thank you."

Bill looked at the pictures of his mother, his brother, his niece. Both his parents, in only a few months. His wife, who had been everything to him for so long, a lifetime. His brother, another one, again.

He wished he could really mourn. Cry like some people did, like Ginny did. No shame to show weakness, just honest grief. Bill couldn't bring himself to do it, however. If he cried it was when he was alone at night, if he grieved it was when no one else was around. He hated funerals, a memorial wasn't much better, and most of all he wanted to be elsewhere.

He'd say his good byes when he was alone. It was easier that way.

As soon as he left the little memorial area, James went to find his Uncle Bill. Severus had been studying the new spell work that Dumbledore had put in, seen the difference with the old ones and how they built on each other, and he had declared that no one was messing with them. That was more than enough with James, now he had to notify the team

He approached his uncle, smiling. "Sorry to bring this up here, but I need to talk to you about the research," he said as he put up a privacy spell.

"I talked to Severus, and we've been discussing it for a few days, but after he looked into it, it seems that researching the protective spells isn't really going to help us, for a long list of reasons to do with who's Headmaster and the type of protection the castle has. I'm sure he can give you the long, snotty explanation; I'll just give you the conclusion: stop working on those, and move to the other items on your list. He'll take care of those."

Marlene hadn't cried for her sister, for her mother, or for her grandparents; she hadn't cried for friends; she certainly hadn't cried for herself, but now, as she watched the portrait smile at everyone like this was a party, her throat tightened and she could barely speak.

She turned toward Alastor. He looked tired or maybe it was getting to him as well. Instead of asking him, she hugged him, kissing his neck in a gesture of affection. "I'm going to miss him," she whispered.

When she pulled back, she looked up at him, because her heels had been replaced by one inch heels, because she might like stilettos, but she wasn't going to patrol on them. "I miss you, too."

Alastor put an arm around her waist when she hugged him and kept it there. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and murmured, "I know...on both counts."

The days since the attacks had been long and tiring and showed no signs of letting up for a while yet. They had the people inside and safe, for the time being. Now they had to worry about keeping them that way, keeping them happy enough they didn't revolt, getting supplies organised and accounted for, putting out rules and regulations that would likely be unpopular but necessary to keep going until they could get a better sense of the world outside the walls.

Listening to Jamie give the portrait the combined thanks of all three of them, he had to wonder again if he was up to this task, despite his resolve to see it through for his former commander.

"It'll get easier," he said quietly, though if that was to reassure her or himself he couldn't have said.

Dylan/?

Dylan stood towards the back, watching the pictures moving. It seemed unreal, that so many had died at once, and yet he wasn't sure how to feel about any of it. It was as if the numbness that had been there before had returned after his breakdown, not quite as pressing, now that he had someone there with him every night. But his days were quickly turning into a routine. He patrolled his twelve hours a day, making sure people didn't venture outside, checking for breeches that so far hadn't been there. Nights were spent with Dom. If he wished for a bit more variety, he never voiced it because this was war and he wouldn't get it until they won. It was just how things were.

He looked over at Jamie, and wondered when he'd last got some sleep. Craig was getting Werewolves and company, he probably couldn't be happier. He worried about Ben but he seemed to have people there for him, and what good was he at such things anyway? He also worried about Dom, she had lost so many, but he could focus on her tonight, when it was just the two of them. For now he'd just stand back, and let others have their time. This wasn't mourning, not for him, it was just a lot of pictures waiving.

It was harder than he'd thought, standing alone with his mother for the memorial. He hadn't been surprised when she'd rattled something off about protection against krakens, and hurried off. She didn't deal well with crowds, especially without Rolf there. So he'd just hugged her close and let her go.

He'd stayed though, not able to bring himself away from the memorial. His brother was gone, so was his father. He and his mother were alone now, and that meant he had to take care of her. She was a strong woman, but her entire world had been rocked in a matter of months. Never mind that his had to, Rolf had been her entire world.

So, he would take care of her. It was his job now. He knuckled away tears, missing Sandy so desperately. Sandy would know what to, what to say. He'd always been there for Lori, and Lori hadn't even tried to get to him. He'd just followed Margot to Hogwarts, relieved that Scorpius was there, and hoping the best for his twin. He should have gone after him. Should have done something to help him.

He swallowed, and knuckled away more tears. He backed away from the memorial, and moved blindly towards the castle and the soothing atmosphere of the infirmary. He wasn't watching where he was going, and brushed past someone, almost stumbling.

Blushing he looked up, relieved when it was Dylan. "Sorry," he whispered, wiping his eyes again. "I didn't see you."

On the one hand she knew everyone was mortal. She knew they were all going to die. She knew she herself had died at one point, though she did not remember it. She even knew that Dumbledore had once died, in the past for most people here. It was never something she'd lived, it seemed unreal. Dumbledore had been a constant, someone she'd relied on.

If she had tears in her eyes perhaps it wasn't such a big sign of weakness that she could not tolerate it in herself.

She stood to the side, making sure to watch the crowd, because no matter how touched she was, how much she'd miss the former Headmaster, she couldn't let go of the paranoia that told her to keep an eye out just in cse. She almost wished she could, but her logic told her not to. And so she did what she'd learnt from a childhood, forced her feelings inside, and focused on what had to be done.

He'd been here before it seemed, the same grounds, the same reasons, though this time they weren't just remembering Dumbledore, but so many others. Molly, who'd been like a mother to him in so many ways. George, who had always been good for a laugh even when things were at their darkest. Roxanne, who hadn't even started her life yet. Rolf who had been a great friend. Sandy, almost a nephew. No not almost. So many Auror, all of them people he knew personally, that he respected and had worked with in some way or another.

Lily, the picture that wasn't there, but she was nevertheless lost to him. In a way that hurt the most, to have lost his daughter again. He knew that this time there would be going back, no saving her. She was lost forever, because even if she lived through this war, no one would forgive, not now.

He sat with Ginny, comforting her as she cried for too many people at once. He didn't cry, he couldn't. Once more he felt more cold than anything else, determined. He wanted this war to end, but there was only one way to do it and that was to fight. He'd been here before all right. This time he didn't even hope to survive, just to keep his sons alive. If he could do that, he'd be happy, whether he was alive or dead.

Ron felt numb, it had hurt when his father died, and there had been a murderous rage that filled him when he got new of Fleur, but today - today when there were so many they were mourning Ron felt nothing. Maybe he should have, but then Hermione had always said he had the emotional range of a teaspoon.

He couldn't feel anything, he sat with his family, looked at the pictures of the people they'd lost. Smiling and happy, and they would never truly see them like that again. And instead of feeling hurt or angry or sad about any of it Ron just felt empty inside. Like it was all too big, if he let even a little bit of it in it would crush him.

He placed a hand on Harry's shoulder - assuring himself that there would be at least one person here today who knew what it was he was feeling, or not feeling. They'd done this all before, and it was only worse the second time around.

Remus
[info]galarusblaidd
2010-06-22 10:38 pm UTC (link)
There was no wall to stand with his back against out here, too many people to think of standing in the back away from the ones who mattered. Yet, Remus still stood off to one side, leaving just that one more seat available for the injured, mothers with children too young to truly understand what was going on. The one constant that any who paid attention to such things would not was that, as always, he stood near at hand to family.

Not, Sirius and James as he had been wont to at meetings, but Ted. He wouldn't interfere. Ted and Victoire would need to and want to lean on each other. But, his son had lost family and his son was who he needed to be standing by that afternoon.

Listening to James, he realised how much the younger man had grown up since Remus had first exchanged generational boasts with him at a family dinner the previous fall. That dinner seemed a lifetime ago. Even the day James had asked they help prepare the grounds for dragons seemed a lifetime ago. In one afternoon their world had changed.

And Remus was beginning to understand how his future self had been so far beside himself with Dumbledore's passing in the second war. Standing at yet one more memorial service, he couldn't help feeling a little lost without the man he'd first thought of as a mentor, then resented, and now -- after the last several weeks spent training with the man and regaining some of the friendship they might have had when Remus had been older -- a friend once more.

Blinking back emotion he wouldn't express in public, he thought wryly that the Taboo had accomplished one thing -- he could call the man Albus now as he'd teased so many months ago.

Al sidled up to Severus' side. Wasn't it odd that the funerals were the constant events in Al's life which he came to rely on because they put himself and Severus in the same location and in relative peace and quiet for a reliable period of time.

A constant like that was rare, especially in a busy time. And Al'd been busy, adjusting to a new location and getting his mind and body used to working on a new task, but the underlying routine of it was welcome. It wasn't really new, he'd discovered, he'd done it all before at the Prophet. Sticking to a quiet corner and staying away from Busfield's attention - it was Uncle Bill's attention now - and welcoming the quiet monotony of it. Proofreading Peter's new notes and looking up historical references on Hogwarts' defenses and diving into a specific task like a maniac for hours at a time and letting his thoughts fly and outshine the surroundings. Focus. Twelve hours of work a day really weren't enough.

However, this particular disruption to his routine was oddly welcome. Severus would be there, Al thought, even as he left his current notes and reading behind and exited the door before Uncle Bill shooed them out of the new research area and secured the doors behind them.

Al stood by Severus, as he never got a chance to in all the funerals prior, and his mind quietly filled in the numbers: dates of birth, dates of return, dates of death, and years lived in between, mingled with equations of Peter's notes in his mind.

Funerals were never easy. She stayed close to James, gripping his hand and resting her head on his shoulder, wondering if she needed to feel guilty about how relieved she was that he was all right.

After the ceremony she kissed him and sent him off to see Sirius or Remus, while she went to find Severus. They hadn't had much chance to talk, just a brief congratulation from her to him and Al on their marriage. She didn't expect much time now, but she wanted to at least see for herself that he was sleeping more than an hour a night.

She spotted Al and Severus and grinned at the sight they made. She knew not everyone would see it, but they complimented each other nicely. "Hello you two," she said, greeting them with a smile. She hugged Severus quickly, and then gave Al three gentle but firm pats to the shoulder.

"What have you learned new today?" The question was directed at Al, as more general questions on how he was feeling would only confuse him.

The memorial had been difficult. Being asked to play Amazing Grace had been hard, but had helped in the end. Later, he'd come back to the memorial alone, and play Hey Jude. He didn't think he could get through it without crying, but that would be all right.

When the service was done, he took a shuddering breath. Wiping away tears he'd been oblivious to during Jamie's speech, and took a seat on the top of a small hill nearby, and just watched.

He pulled his knees to his chest, wrapped his arms around them. He felt alone, surrounded by people but alone, and wished desperately for Ronan's arms around him again. He wondered if he'd ever feel warm again.

Her eyes hurt and she was still hiccuping. Seeing her grandmother's photo smiling and waving to all of them made Rose cry even harder. When the memorial was over, she felt like curling up into a ball and never moving again.

As she moved away from the pictures of her family's faces, she saw Ben sitting mostly by himself and her insides ached even more. Silently, she changed directions and came and sat down next to him. Rose wrapped her arms around him the best she could and rested her head on his shoulders while tears fell down her face.

"I'm sorry."

Pressing a kiss to Victoire's cheek, Ted promised to see her soon. He just needed a few moments to himself. His grandmother hadn't made it in. He could hope and pray that she had stayed safe...somewhere, but he wasn't going to hold his breath. The wards on Bertram Place were not impenetrable and Andromeda Tonks' had made her position clear when she had married a muggleborn. Why wouldn't she be a target for Bella Lestrange's wand?

Shaking his head, one had to grasp at hope at times like these, the metamorphmagus began to make his rounds to other knots of people, taking mental notes of those children who had lost at least one parent. Though he had grown up in a large (adopted) extended family, he knew what it was like to grow up with the large hole in one's heart.

There had been too many lost, but hopefully their losses would not be in vain.

Patrick looked on as people walked to the alter, putting flowers. He had put one of Marcus before it had started, and now he stayed back, keeping his grief private.

He turned around when he felt someone get closer. "Hey, there. How are you holding up?" he asked. "Are you tired of writing yet?" He knew Ted better than to think that he actually minded. People needed organisation and Ted was the best when it came to it. "How is Victoire?"

Lucy had gone to stand by herself on the outskirts of the crowd after Jamie had finished speaking. So many were gone. It wasn't right.

She wiped her eyes again as her mind went through the list. She had been ignoring the pain the past few days, doing her best not to think about the questions still unanswered.

What about her mother? Why was her father at the ministry still. He had spoken with her before the attack, telling her decide if she wanted to come to Hogwarts or not. He had known something was happening and wanted her safe, but he had stayed behind. It couldn't be that he believed in Voldemort, she had to believe that.

By why wasn't her mother on any list?

Lucy looked over at Molly, knowing she should go join her sister, or any of her relatives.

Jamie however solved that problem for her when he approached her, "Hello," she said, doing her best to offer him a smile.

Part of Craig hadn't even wanted to come to the memorial, not wanting yet another reminder of how things had changed. He understood why it was good to have it though, how it could inspire people to fight, help them use their feelings of grief and loss to fuel them.

He still didn't have to like it though. Or move closer to inspect it as some were. The list of dead he knew was imprinted in his memory. The Weasley's, Terry, Cedric, other students, Aurors he had met or even just heard of through Jamie and Dylan. It was all so senseless.

Hearing someone approach him Craig turned to give a small smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Hey, how are you?"

There were so many names on the list of the dead; most of them were names Margot didn't recognized. Still, there was one she did and it made her heart ache. In the few weeks since her return Margot spoke with Dumbledore, reminding her of the times she spent listening to him and her grandfather.

She kept to the back of the group, not wanting to disrupt those who were mourning loved ones. Margot crossed over to one of the Hogwart's staff. At least, she thought he was staff. With all her time in the infirmary, she hardly had time to learn names.

"Hi. I'm...fine, I suppose," she answered. "How are you? I'm Margot by the way."

She stayed in the back with a Silencing charm over Sammy in case he cried while Jamie was speaking. It honestly felt exactly like the memorial after the Battle of Hogwarts all those years ago. Only then, Hannah had been able to help and now she wasn't doing much of anything. At least, that was how she felt.

Cedric... Twice she had attended services for him. Once when she probably would have passed out from not breathing if he ever spoke to her and now. He was still brave; helping students off the train. Closing her eyes, she said some parting words to the fallen and those who cared for them.

Footsteps came from behind, so she turned. "Hello."

Scorpius kissed Lori's cheek and walked through the crowd. His grandmother had died but he cared more about Lori and the fact that he lost his brother and father. They were good people, and this wasn't right. He looked at the pictures again and sighed. Narcissa had her usual air of superiority, but then there was Sandy and he could have easily been Lori.

Leaving the pictures he walked around, expressing his apologies to the Weasley's when he saw them. He hurt for that family as well. Molly had been good to him especially. He remembered her trying to feed him and smiled a little bit. It caused him to nearly bump into someone as he walked. "Oh sorry," he mumbled.

Fred stared at the picture of George, trying to feel something. Sure, he was upset that his brother had lost his life, but at the same time it just felt like he was dead inside. Truth be told, he had been more upset when he came back and George had refused to see him initially. That's when he had to get over the fact that he no longer had a twin but rather a brother on the same wavelength. George had lived almost twice as long as he and had grown up on him. Sure, they had gotten closer as the months wore on, but they both had different priorities in the end.

He shook his head, trying to figure out feelings and emotions were more confusing than Fred wanted to deal with.

So yes, he would mourn his brother just like he would mourn his mother, in an odd semi-detached way as he tried to navigate this new reality of being holed up in Hogwarts as they plotted their next move.

Fred glanced around, catching sight of Bill and a smirk grew across his face. Oh yes, there would be plotting and Bill said he could be apart of it.

Turning around, Fred began to walk off, nearly bumping into someone. "Oh, sorry."

Hadn't he just been to one of these? A hundred of these? His mother. His grandfather. Gideon. Aunt Fleur.

And now his father. Roxanne.

Why?

Alex tried to fade into the background as people clustered together, knowing that today of all days he wouldn't be able to deal with fond thoughts of his dad, of commiserations about his sister who was 'much too young', or even sad looks and hugs.

Pulling a photo in a small frame from inside his bag, he approached the memorial. His mother should be here too. His mother smiled and waved from behind the glass, and Alex touched it with one fingertip before setting it next to his father's.

"I'm sorry, Mum," he whispered. "I didn't really mean what I said, that day." The last time he'd seen her, he'd snapped for her to leave him alone please so he could study, and she'd gone. "I know you know it, but I'd give anything to have you back..." He turned to his father, touching that frame as well. "And you. We were just getting along. You were going to teach me about... everything. I miss you..." He swallowed, glancing at the other photos. Roxanne. Grandmama. He'd never get another jumper...

Alex stood for another moment, oddly cold even on this warm afternoon, then turned and moved aside, giving others a chance to come up, moving to a spot where he could watch, and think, and mourn.

I miss you...

Victoire had let Teddy go off to talk to others. She knew he needed the time and so did she. She walked up to the portraits. Her grandmother's was there, and her uncle George as well. She sighed and wiped away a tear, thinking of her mother, brutally murdered. This morning had been difficult and it was sapping her strength. She kept herself working tirelessly so that she wouldn't completely break down. The research team with her father was an ideal placement for her.

"I'm so sorry," she told each one of them. "We will make this right." It was all that any of them could promise. She didn't know if the words were heard, wherever they were.

Her thoughts drifted from her her mother and then Teddy and back again. If she lost him too, it would be too much. They were going to get married soon, now she wanted to make it even sooner. They didn't need a big ceremony, they just needed to be alive.
