Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Everyone
What: The Final, The Last, The End
Where: Outside Bellum Letale
When: The morning after the masquerade.
Warnings: This is a party post.
Notes: I will not cry I will not cry I will not cry.

The limos pull along the quiet avenue leading to Bellum Letale, and the coming dawn is entirely obscured by midnight's black still. The entourage strongly resembles a funeral, but despite how hard they may look, if the hearse is ahead, the twists and turns of the looming buildings obscure death's coach.

Suddenly, light: but it is not the dawn. It's orange and yellow, a flickering, dangerous light, a candle flame with aspirations to the heavens. It's Bellum Letale. The roof is already consumed, licking heat kindling in the windows of the highest floors and spitting hungry tongues of fire out of the lower exits. The vehicles bearing every resident continue without pause, drawing all nearer, an oil slick puddling at the base of the burning building. The area is still vacant, and a harsh reminder of how the building itself drives off those who take no part in life within its walls.

Before the limousines allow their passengers to alight, there is a massive crash, and the balconies crunch inward within the building's skeleton. More collapsing supports throughout, as levels and walls give way to the heat, and the building goes lame a floor at a time. The locks click, and the doors open, allowing all passengers the freedom of the heat-choked air. Minutes pass as the flames grow more wild and the smoke thickens, until the sound of cracking timber is interrupted by a roar that makes the surviving trees sway and jolts the sewer covers from their beds.

Something pushes through the third floor windows, a limb the size of a redwood that glints of skin or scales. It rakes out, reaching beyond the boundaries of the building into the air--and finding nothing, curls back inward, drawing with it red hot steel beams and raining molten glass and burning splinters down among onlookers. Another earth-shattering below as the creature claws at the night air from successive floors, taking the building down chunk by flaming chunk, until the ruin sinks down into the basement in clouds of debris and choking smoke.

As dawn breaks in spectacular pink and orange rays, the fire is subdued by late-arriving servicemen, and the smell of doused charcoal overtakes all. There is no sign of whatever was within the building as it collapsed, and no witnesses except for those men and women so unfortunate as to be able to hear its death throes--these now homeless residents of Bellum Letale.

The new day breaks, and the smoldering ruins are all that remains. Heaps of brick, fluttering shrouds of burnt material, crushed furniture--and the sturdy stone outline of a stone wishing well, still untouched, buried in the crater of the cataclysm.

Hearing her name was a strange thing. She almost expected the speaker to be something horrible, like a swamp monster or the boogeyman. Turning quickly, Joanie threw a wide-eyed look over her shoulder before registering who it was. "Hannah!" she exclaimed, twisting to face the other woman.

This was one of the few times that holding back wasn't on her To-Do List. Without any warning, she flung herself at the blonde, pulling her into a tight, manic hug. Resting her forehead against her own arm, she squeezed slightly, her breaths shallow and fast. "You're okay," she breathed, finally releasing her and stepping back.

"I-I'm glad I saw you, I wanted..." She paused, suddenly realizing that hugging somebody she was only semi-friends with at best was probably weird. "Well...I guess this is it, and I didn't want to not say goodbye..."

She set Gabriel down on the ground, letting him sniff around and returning her attention to Joanie with a feeble half-smile. Before she could even start to pull her thoughts together enough to come up with something to say, the other woman flung her arms around her in an unexpected hug. It wasn't unwelcome, however; Hannah didn't have too many friends left in Bellum, and even though she and Joanie weren't exactly close, she returned the hug gratefully.

"Yeah," she sighed, still a little shaky as she stepped back. "I wasn't expecting... this." She waved a hand towards the remains of Bellum. "It seems like it might be a dream, and I'm not sure if I want to wake up or not." The finality of it hit her suddenly, and she realized her chances of seeing any of these people again was slim to none. Nick, Luther, Lotte... they'd go on their way and she'd go on hers. "But I guess you're right. I'm glad... I found you, then. To say one last goodbye."

As Hannah mentioned a dream, Joanie let out a soft laugh that bordered on hysterical. "In Bellum, it's never a dream. This is our reality now." She paused, feeling her eyes begin to burn. She wasn't sure why, but something about saying an official goodbye always hurt. Especially when it was to someone she had liked.

"Me too," she replied softly, reaching up to stroke a hand over her jaw, coming to a point at her chin. "You have my number. I...I can still do it." She paused, looking over her shoulder. Screw it. "My magic's still on, so...if you want to really go green, I can always turn your empty soda cans into a princess ballgown." She offered a thin smile, shifting somewhat awkwardly.

For some reason she found herself laughing along with Joanie, a mixture of tiredness and everything that had just happened in the last few hours finally taking its toll on her. "You're right - Bellum seemed to be good at making dreams into reality. Or nightmares, that is." At least it was all over - or so she told herself. Some good had to come from this.

Hannah had nearly forgotten that she still had Joanie's number - at least she could still keep in contact with some people. "Oh, yeah. I do--" She paused, frowning until she elaborated and it made sense. "Oh. You can? I guess not even the building being destroyed changes everything." She'd thought that their abilities would have vanished, but maybe not. "You're lucky. That could come in handy - never mind save the world from global warming." She'd never been very good at goodbyes, mainly because she'd never really had a chance to say any. Most people left her life without warning, and now she wasn't quite sure what to say. "Do you... know where you're going to go now? Any plans or anything?"

The mention of Bellum's nightmare ability made Joanie nod enthusiastically. "Christ alive, is it good at that." Remembering the last Full Moon, she flinched slightly. She had always feared Javert, but that night had been, hands-down, the worst in her entire life. Only Bellum would take her best friend and give him a convincing reason to want to kill her in cold blood.

She nodded as Hannah commented on her luck. The only question was how long would it last? "Yeah, it should help..." But all the magic in the world couldn't fix how royally fucked-up this entire situation was. Being able to turn forks into spoons only went so far. At the question of her fate now that they were all homeless bums, she nodded slightly. "I've got a cousin in the city. I'm kind of expecting him to put up me, Luther, and Sam for a day or two while we figure out what the hell to do." She paused. "Do you have somewhere to go? If you need a night's sleep, you can come with us."

"Yeah." She couldn't help but glance over at the remains of Bellum, wondering what would happen to the spot now - would it just stay empty, or would someone try to build another building over it? For everyone's sake, she hoped not. "Or at least... it was."

Hannah vaguely remembered hearing about a Sam, and of course she knew Luther - she was glad Joanie was going to stick with him for a while. It was better not to be alone for someone in his state of mind, just in case. Even though she hadn't really given much thought to where she was going to go next, she realized that she wasn't alone - she had friends from the shelter who'd likely be willing to offer her a place to stay. "Thanks, but... I've got some friends from work I think I'm going to call. At least until I figure out where to go next."

Talking about Bellum in the past tense was almost painful. It meant she had to accept that it was really gone. Taking a slow breath, she nodded tersely. "Yeah. Was."

Looking down, she scratched self-consciously at the back of her neck. "Good," she said, looking up at Hannah. "Take care of yourself, okay?" She paused, tongue tripping up on itself. "You deserve it. Even though I don't know you well, I...I know enough that you deserve to do well." Feeling her eyes burn, she straightened up. "So you go do that. Go take the whole fucking world by storm, Xena." She offered a tight smile, nodding tersely.

Now that it came down to the final moment before they parted ways, Hannah found herself wanting to mirror Joanie's movements and look away as well, but she forced herself to keep her gaze at least generally straight. "I will. You take care of yourself too... but I know you'll be fine." She shrugged awkwardly. "You seem like a strong person. Stronger than most people I've ever known." She managed a weak smile, nodding. "I guess that's the one thing Bellum did - it kind of brought people together faster than usual."

She hadn't realized she was in danger of crying until she felt the telltale burning in the corner of her eyes. Honestly, after everything that had happened, she was going to cry now? That would just make things even harder, so she took a deep breath and tried to pull herself together. "I will. And you... just keep doing what you do best. With or without your magic, you're still kickass." She pulled her bag tighter over her shoulder as a distraction, determined to keep back the tears until she was on her own. "Bye, Joanie. I'll... call to check in sometime, once everything's settled." Stooping over to pick up Gabriel, Hannah offered one last smile before turning and heading away from the building and the crowd. She was free to go anywhere, to do anything; and for now that was enough for her... even if she would miss Bellum and the people who'd once lived in it.
