Letale Narrator--The Bellum Letale Mod Journal ([info]letalenarrator) wrote in [info]bellumlogs,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Everyone
What: The Final, The Last, The End
Where: Outside Bellum Letale
When: The morning after the masquerade.
Warnings: This is a party post.
Notes: I will not cry I will not cry I will not cry.

The limos pull along the quiet avenue leading to Bellum Letale, and the coming dawn is entirely obscured by midnight's black still. The entourage strongly resembles a funeral, but despite how hard they may look, if the hearse is ahead, the twists and turns of the looming buildings obscure death's coach.

Suddenly, light: but it is not the dawn. It's orange and yellow, a flickering, dangerous light, a candle flame with aspirations to the heavens. It's Bellum Letale. The roof is already consumed, licking heat kindling in the windows of the highest floors and spitting hungry tongues of fire out of the lower exits. The vehicles bearing every resident continue without pause, drawing all nearer, an oil slick puddling at the base of the burning building. The area is still vacant, and a harsh reminder of how the building itself drives off those who take no part in life within its walls.

Before the limousines allow their passengers to alight, there is a massive crash, and the balconies crunch inward within the building's skeleton. More collapsing supports throughout, as levels and walls give way to the heat, and the building goes lame a floor at a time. The locks click, and the doors open, allowing all passengers the freedom of the heat-choked air. Minutes pass as the flames grow more wild and the smoke thickens, until the sound of cracking timber is interrupted by a roar that makes the surviving trees sway and jolts the sewer covers from their beds.

Something pushes through the third floor windows, a limb the size of a redwood that glints of skin or scales. It rakes out, reaching beyond the boundaries of the building into the air--and finding nothing, curls back inward, drawing with it red hot steel beams and raining molten glass and burning splinters down among onlookers. Another earth-shattering below as the creature claws at the night air from successive floors, taking the building down chunk by flaming chunk, until the ruin sinks down into the basement in clouds of debris and choking smoke.

As dawn breaks in spectacular pink and orange rays, the fire is subdued by late-arriving servicemen, and the smell of doused charcoal overtakes all. There is no sign of whatever was within the building as it collapsed, and no witnesses except for those men and women so unfortunate as to be able to hear its death throes--these now homeless residents of Bellum Letale.

The new day breaks, and the smoldering ruins are all that remains. Heaps of brick, fluttering shrouds of burnt material, crushed furniture--and the sturdy stone outline of a stone wishing well, still untouched, buried in the crater of the cataclysm.

"How...how could...what was that thing?!" Gabby stammered, still in shock over what was just witnessed. She was certain that nightmares where a giant fucking arm reached out to tear her house down were going to haunt her for quite some time after this.

Then she remembered something. Glinda - where was Glinda? Would she still be around? Would Gabby even still be able to effectively cast her spells, would she even need to practice? What if the only reason Gabby had the talent was because Bellum Letale was in existence and she was meant to be here - now it was gone, so was her talent gone as well?

"No," she gasped, feeling her stomach twist and turn, dismounting off the balance beam. What was she supposed to do now? All she was good for was looking pretty and shopping for shoes? That couldn't be true, but she couldn't progress with her magic without Glinda.

A shield wasn't necessary now so Gabby didn't bother to create one. Instead, she ducked back into the limo and rummaged around in her bag until she found the hexenspiegel charm, which was meant to provide personal protection against negative energy and ill will. Quickly, she gripped it in her hand, closing her eyes and whispering the words she knew that would give the charm a charge. Then she opened her hands and the charm glowed for a moment, a brief flash of light. That meant she still had her magic, so she breathed a sigh of relief (for now) and put the necklace on, pulling her mass of curly hair over one shoulder so it wouldn't get caught in the chain.

She reached for Bran's hand, clasping it in between both of hers. He was all she had, really - the person she felt the closest to in the building. Something told her that she should find Joanie and check on her, but Joanie hadn't known she was talking to Gabby at the masquerade - and she told her to stay away because of the Wicked Witch. It wasn't like it mattered much now, however, but there was still a chance they weren't completely rid of their fables yet.

"Okay...okay...alright..." She took a few deep breaths. "A plan of action would be good." Gabby figured that a hotel would suffice for now, or she could just pack what she had in her car and drive home for a bit, until she found a new place to live. But what about Bran? Bran and his solitary musician self and his crappy cooking skills and living off of take-out! She would take him with her if he wanted, she decided. At least he'd get fed well down there with that southern home cooking.

His life had been riddled with some pretty strange and awful sights, but Will would fully admit this one belonged in the top ten, if not the top five. He was completely silent watching it fall into itself and then watching the others as they clustered on the sidewalk. Every person was numb, some reacting wildly, others, like him, caught in a state without words. Others, like Gabby, were in-between, finding words but not exactly the right ones.

Eventually, he shook his head and cleared the flashes of fire from his eyes, looking over at Bran and Gabby half-questioningly. The garage had apparently been spared the fire, which meant that his car was all right, but he couldn't get all his furniture back with one long-suffering Ford. First, he supposed, he'd find his way back, get some of the stuff, make sure nothing had happened in their absence. Then he'd find either someone to buy the heavy stuff, or a truck willing to haul it. From there ... he didn't know where to go from there. But that was all long-term planning. Right now, he just needed to get somewhere that wasn't in front of the wreckage of the place that had screwed with his life.

"I'm going to try and figure out if there's anybody to talk to about this. Any landlord, maintenance ... " He shrugged. "After that, I'll see what happens." Though he remembered hearing about a landlord that left, just up and disappeared, he knew there had to be someone else who'd controlled him, sent him and gotten rid of him. Those would be the people to find, he knew. How, though ... that was another question altogether.

"Maybe it was the guy in charge." It was meant to be a joke, albeit a bitterly stated and not very humorous one. He did wonder if that thing, whatever it was, had been living in the building the whole time... the catacombs were large, after all. Or maybe it had just appeared. Who knew? It wasn't like they were ever going to be able to find out now. How was he even supposed to know if he had his ability or not? It wasn't like he could just randomly burst into song and see whether it had any kind of trance-like effect on the people around him.

His attention was diverted when Gabby ducked back into the limo, and he watched as she held some charm thing in her hand and whispered a few words. If she was trying to see if her own ability still remained, he assumed it was a success based on her subsequent sigh of relief - so perhaps they hadn't yet lost their connections to their fables. Maybe not even the building's destruction could sever that kind of tie. It was a bit of a relief, but there was still the question of what he was supposed to do now and where to go. The only person he really might have missed aside from Gabby was Lotte, but he had no idea where she was or even if he'd have a chance to say goodbye. Maybe it didn't really matter, though.

He glanced towards Will with a short nod. "I was never aware of any landlord or maintenance man... but it's somewhere to start, I guess. We're all going to have to find other places to live, though. Obviously." Bellum wasn't coming back, and he highly doubted any magical landlord was going to pop up and offer them money or another place to stay. Bran already began thinking of possibilities - he could start traveling again, like before. He had some money saved up, and it wouldn't be hard to get some more. Maybe he'd go back to Europe, find a place to settle down... or he could just keep moving. Never stay in one place for too long. But for now, a temporary plan might be a good idea. "Staying in a hotel is always an option, until people can figure out where to go next."

"You're right, the demonic alien probably was the landlord," Gabby shuddered. And to think it had been lurking below the surface this whole time! She highly doubted it came out of nowhere or randomly selected buildings to fuck with and destroy. Obviously it was just chilling out in its lair, waiting for the moment to render them all homeless.

She tilted her head a bit, looking at Will. "Just be careful. Don't you get swallowed up by that scaly dragon thing too!" she warned, then strode forward to give him a hug, and a kiss on the cheek. He was a nice man, if a bit...frightening. But nice overall! No one could only be broken down into and described in only a few adjectives anyway.

But as for Bran, she went back to his side and slid her arm around his waist, glancing up at him. "Yes, hotel, all of that but...you're coming with me, you know. If you want to. But I really am probably going to demand it a little? Otherwise your intestines will explode and you know how I hate that."

The idea that the building was run by some weird alien thing was firmly out of the realm of believability, and so Will shoved it into the back of his mind and pulled out his phone, checking the time and if they were even still in their own reality - if this wasn't the building pulling yet another trick on them. Everything seemed legit, though. It was kind of unnerving. He supposed it might have been some kind of shock setting in.

Gabby's hug and kiss came unexpectedly, but he wasn't caught totally off-guard. She was just a very affectionate person, he supposed; there was no point in trying to hold her off from that now, when chances were they'd never meet again. He didn't plan on staying in New York for much longer, anyway. This place had been enough busy city life for him; the business now was like the last straw.

"I'm not going anywhere near the building, don't worry." Will looked at the pair of them, digging his hands into his jacket pockets. "Hotels can't hurt for a few days. Whatever you two do ... good luck with it." It was about as close to support as Will could give, and neither of them seemed like bad people, as far as first impressions went. Seemed like a nice couple. Maybe bringing people together was one good thing that place had done, but it hadn't helped him find who he was looking for; it would be along time before he ever got to that point, he figured.

Bran wasn't nearly as affectionate as Gabby was, especially not with strangers; so after she'd said her goodbye or whatever it was he simply offered the man a polite nod. He seemed alright, level-headed and sensible at least, which was admirable. It was very unlikely that he'd ever see him again - he'd probably never see any of them, for that matter. "Thanks. Good luck with whatever you do, too." It was honest, albeit a little awkwardly stated.

He was actually shocked into silence when Gabby informed him that he was going with her. "I am?" It was hard to process the concept that she actually wanted him with her. Then, of course, he had to decide whether or not he wanted to go with her in the first place. Traveling alone was something he was used to, and he wasn't sure how being with another person would work out.

Then again... this was his chance. Erik would have refused and gone on his own, but Bran didn't have to do the same. He wasn't the same, and now that Bellum was gone there was nothing keeping him tied to a specific fate. He didn't have to let his story end like Erik's had. It couldn't hurt to give it a shot, right? "You don't have to demand anything," he said finally. "I'll come with you."

Gabby smiled - sweet, gentle, and kind. And covered with loose dust particles from the building's demise. "Oh good, that makes it easier on both of us, Raven. I'm awfully bitchy when I demand things," she teased, her forehead resting against his collarbone as her other arm went around his waist. What followed was a hug, before she turned her head to the side, her cheek against his chest now - and she noticed all the people milling about.

"Do you need to do anything else before leaving?" she asked. All of what she needed to say had already been said.

"Really?" He tilted his head to the side to look down at her in mock surprise. "Hmm, I don't believe it." Even though Bran still wasn't sure why she liked him in the first place, but he couldn't deny that the days when he thought she was annoying were long since past. Actually, he'd really just expected her to be intolerable before being proved wrong - which wasn't a usual occurrence. Despite not quite being able to figure it out yet, he liked her too.

The presence of other people got him thinking, and suddenly his decision was made. This was it, he was moving on - and the last bit of closure he needed was to say good-bye to Lotte. Whether she believed him or not, he knew what the truth was now; and he was realizing that was all that mattered. The truth was that he'd thought she was something she wasn't, something he'd needed and been searching for... but he'd also been wrong. "Yeah. Just... one thing. I need to find someone before we leave." He didn't completely pull away, just enough to be able to properly look at her. "I won't be long - I'll meet you back here in fifteen minutes?" Personally he didn't mind if she tagged along, although it would probably be awkward enough saying what he needed to say to just Lotte, never mind with someone else there; but he wasn't sure how to explain that.

Gabby figured that Bran would need to say goodbye to people - after all, he had been here longer than she had. And she didn't want to intrude on anything.

"Go on, darling," she said, and leaned up to kiss the corner of his mouth before letting go. "I'll meet you back here in fifteen minutes."

[From here.]

After watching Lotte leave, Bran felt considerably lighter than he had before. Yes, the building was destroyed and they were all essentially homeless, but maybe it wasn't such a bad thing. At least it was a chance to move on, and even though they might still have their abilities, he doubted the full moon transformations would happen anymore. Maybe a part of them would remain connected to their fables, but it didn't have to define them... not anymore. Despite his closeness to Erik, a distant fond memory to be tucked away was all he wanted him to be now.

He turned and made his way back through the crowd, spotting Gabby and heading towards her. "I've done all I needed to do," he told her once he reached her side, casting another look around - but now it was casual, not longing. He was ready to go and never look back. "Whenever you want to leave, I'm ready."

Gabby waited patiently for Bran, getting her things together and sending a few text messages to her parents to see if it was alright to come home for a visit. All of her things were still in storage, but she had the essentials for now and that was what U-Haul was for. It also wouldn't hurt to get new furniture too, wherever she ended up...oooh, hello Ikea! It will be nice to see you again!

When Bran approached she stuffed her phone back in her purse and smiled at him. "I'm ready," she nodded. "Feel like going to Georgia? I'll drive, as long as you don't mind me singing along to Lady Gaga and 30 Seconds to Mars." Her eyes twinkled, however, giving her away. "Though I might be able to be convinced to switch it to Mozart occasionally. Depends on your methods." With an eyelash flutter, she scooted up close to him and tilted her face up, the tip of her nose touching his.

He had no set destination in mind, and anywhere that wasn't here sounded just fine to him. "Sure, Georgia sounds great." He'd been too many places over the years to remember every single one, but he hadn't spent too much time in the South - so at least it would be a new experience. Listening to Lady Gaga the entire way would also be a new experience, but he pulled a face at the thought. "I guess it wouldn't be so bad, as long as you sing along." Bran couldn't pretend that he wouldn't have preferred Mozart, though, and a smile tugged at his lips as he looked down at her.

"I think my methods might end up being pretty successful," he said thoughtfully, leaning forward to kiss her. For once he didn't worry about the future, deciding that he'd take whatever happened as it came and go from there.

Just dance, gonna be okay! Da da doo doo! Gabby, of course, returned the kiss, her arms winding around Bran's neck - and she gave him another passionate expression of affection to follow that one. She didn't care who was watching or that the entire surrounding area was covered in debris, and thus it looked like the apocalypse. She was happy she would get to leave with her handsome Dark and Mysterious Raven who had such a nice smile; now hopefully he'd find more reasons to let those particular muscles work.

"I think so too," she agreed, fake-swooning although it wasn't that much of a stretch. Rawr, Raven! "You're very convincing. We'll be jamming to Mozart the whole way there. And I actually have a pretty fantastic voice, darling, I should in fact audition for American Idol. Now we're off to see the Wizard." Humming the first few bars of the song, her fingers entwined with his, she took off - leaving the mess behind.

Usually displays of affection in general weren't something he engaged in, never mind ones in public - but strangely, he just couldn't find it in himself to care as his arms wound themselves around her waist. People were far too preoccupied with their own problems to pay attention, and it wasn't like he really knew many of them anyway. Besides, he'd never really been one to give a damn what other people thought.

"Jamming to Mozart," he smirked. "I like the way that sounds." Despite himself Bran couldn't help but be a little surprised when she said she had a fantastic voice - but whether it was true or not, it didn't really matter. It still made him laugh, though, and he didn't bother looking back at the rubble as he let her lead him away - for once, he was completely willing to follow.
