Russia, Day 4
Who: Group Xi
What: Dinner for the Grand Duke
Where: Alexander Palace
When: Day 4 (OOC, this will probably be open through the weekend)
Warnings: Could be anything. It's a party post.
Notes: Put your character's location in the subject line!

Dinner is an opulent affair.

The formal dining room has place settings for all scheduled attendees. Darcy and Helena are seated at either side of the Grand Duke, who keeps taking liberties with his hands that everyone at the table can see (including Vlad). The dinner is informal, and parties can dine at their leisure while enjoying the other activities of the evening.

The ballroom is chandelier lit for the evening, and an orchestra plays formal dance music, though the collection of nationalities present means that anyone can dance without standing out (as long as they're appropriately attired). There are curtained alcoves off the ballroom that afford some privacy for those so inclined. Lvov will stop his spies periodically, reminding them of the price of betraying him, while Pavel will be watching Joanie from a distance throughout the evening.

[Guests: Helena, Darcy, Vlad, Luther, Joanie, Nicky, Ella, Tegan]

Palace employees are all working the evening of the dinner/dance, and they have access to clothing in the guests' rooms (should they want to crash the festivities), and to the entire palace (should they want to work).

[Palace employees: Oliver, Will, Sam, Rosalie, Jane!Vaughn]

Outside the palace, the mob has seen Vlad, and they remain convinced he's Rasputin and that Jane!Vaughn and Ella are his witches. Even Alexandra seems to feel the same way, as she keeps drawing him aside and whispering to him. The mob is also still in pursuit of a Beast and a Tiger. Therefore, our village-hangers-on have been forced to hide in and within the palace, to keep from getting pitchforked. This group better sneak a bath and some clothing if they want to enter the palace proper.

[Hiding in the Palace: Daniel, Sebastian, Lily, Bernadette ]

[This is a party style thread. Put your character's location within the palace in your subject line. Have dinner, mingle, dance, sneak into one of those alcoves, go take a bath in a huge claw-foot tub, steal clothes, eat the Grand Duke for hitting on your woman, have fun!]

Smirking, she shook her head. "Ooooh shouldn't have said that. Now when the rest of us go home, you'll end up in a room all by yourself, with a candle lit dinner on a nice table. Just you and...the room." It was nice to be a bit distracted by such foolishness. It almost made her feel like things were normal again.

As he mentioned Lvov not holding cards, Joanie cringed. "Yeah," she said, the word half-hearted. "You're right." She didn't believe that, but if she said it, maybe she'd start. He had Tegan, and he didn't have to physically injure her to do something terrible. He could just call her a witch, or throw her to the townspeople, or leave her out in the cold naked. Joanie barely knew the girl, but she wasn't going to have her death hanging overhead.

"It's going to be fine. Okay?" He pulled back a little so his lips weren't right by her ear, but he was looking at Joanie instead. His eyes flickered over her face before he went back to dancing close. "Just don't tell him that he eventually gets arrested and ends up in Paris, basically a disgrace to...everyone," he murmured, sounding somewhat amused. There were probably worse people that she could have been spying for.

His reassurance helped slightly. She murmured in the affirmative, glancing about at the couples around them as he mentioned what happened to Lvov. Eyes wide, she glanced sharply to him. "Really?" she asked, surprise overtaking her. She knew very little about history that didn't involve Indians weeping over their raped homeland and Columbus sailing on a boat. "That...sucks." She wrinkled her nose. "For him, I mean. For us, it's a good thing." Unless she, Ella, Nick, and Tegan were arrested with him for being his accomplices. But enough of that. "I just want to get the hell out of here. I miss fridges and showers."

"Um, yeah, seriously. Look at his beard. It's just screaming 'Here's my mugshot, if we had them.'" The dude really needed to clip that shit, at least a little bit. Forget the time-traveling spies, he probably had a few midgets stashed in there. "I thought I blocked most of my history lessons, since I didn't focus on the subject much, but I guess some of it is coming back since we're, you know, actually here."

Man, Sam could agree with the fridge and shower notion. "Definitely miss showers," he groaned in an undertone. "I'm going to stand in one for an hour, and hopefully not drain all the hot water from the building when we get back."

She laughed, leaning against him briefly before reasserting her balance. "No kidding," she snorted. "I keep thinking it's going to eat his face, so I'm afraid to look away and miss it." It was true, what he said about knowledge coming back. It usually did when you needed it. "Well at least somebody knows what the hell is going on."

As he talked about taking an hour-long shower, she shot him a look. "Oh, if you did that, I think Bellum would form a mob." She canted her head to the side. "I promise not to slash up your face with my fierce pitchfork, should you hog all our precious hot water."

Sam laughed too, executing a smooth turn then anchoring Joanie back into closed position, with little space between them. "Maybe it will eat his face and you'll be off the hook." Stranger things have happened! And Sam definitely put a mental muzzle on Shere Khan before the tiger could pipe up and say that he'd eat the Prince's face. "I'm just trying to bring you away from the gloom and doom of the situation." They weren't going to be torn apart by a mob, no way. Even though Sam would probably detest vodka after this. Damn.

"Or you could always join me," he said about the shower. "Conserving water and all." Har har!

"That'd be nice," she said, chuckling as he mentioned trying to keep her out of the Pit of Angst. "Yeah, I know," she replied breezily. "For the record, it's working. I have no inclination to find some coal to use for eyeliner or start writing bad poetry about the misery of this existence."

Oh, she should have seen that one coming. That was stupidity on her part. Gasping, she flicked him soundly on the shoulder, though she found herself snickering despite herself. "And end up another victim of the smelly Bellum mob? No thanks, I'll go to a hotel and use their hot water."

"Good. I happen to think that your eyes are really pretty without gobs of eyeliner crusting in the lids," Sam said, even though he didn't know the first thing about eyeliner, but still. Why did girls insist on poking themselves in the corneas? "Are you sure you didn't look at me naked?" he teased. "I'm kind of upset about it." Though not really - he doubted that was even on Joanie's mind, since he crushed his spine morphing into a tiger right after.

Compliments were her greatest weakness. Like Kryptonite. Joanie flushed, glancing down. "Well I'll try to crust them less, then," she said, glancing up at him only when he teasingly inquired about whether or not she had seen him naked. Smirking, she tossed her head. "If you're so put off by that, I could always turn your clothes to dust," she teased right back. "Then this whole ballroom would see you naked, and we could all bask in your glory."

Sam scrunched up his nose at the thought. "I don't want everyone to see me naked," he protested, and the tiger of course had to mention that not everyone wanted to see the ape naked either. Whatever. "But hey, if you think it will help sway Lvov over to the side of sending everyone back with his mystical knowledge, then I will gladly drop my pants, mon petit chou."

The thought of seducing Lvov in any way, comedic or not, made Joanie gag. "Ugh," she grunted, shaking her head. "If that actually worked, I think I'd be terrified of ever seeing you naked. Anything that creeper likes has to be rotten or wrong." They turned, passing another few couples whispering about the return of Rasputin and his witches. "Christ, this place needs a tolerance seminar," she muttered.

"I didn't mean it like that!" Good god! No. No way. Sam would probably rather stay in batfucked!Russia rather than 'seduce' that Lvov creature. He just meant that clearly the awesomeness of the situation would be so great as to suddenly send everyone Back to the Future in a glorious time warp. "Look, we'll just get back to you wanting to see me naked and not even mention Lvov. They really think Rasputin and his witches are back." He shook his head. "Gossip mongers, everyone. That's all it is. I don't know what useful information anyone could possibly gleam from all this."

Though Sam was clearly in pain, Joanie laughed. "And since when have I ever said I wanted to see you naked? You're the one that's obsessed with showing off, I'm merely giving you a possible venue in which you can show off in all your nude glory." The mention of gossip made her roll her eyes. "Yeah, it's such bullshit." They turned again, passing another group chattering in French, though Joanie picked up on the word "Rasputin" as they passed. "Nobody knows anything about this, and they're going on and on as if they're the fucking authority." She wrinkled her nose. "Lvov can't use any of this, can he? It's retarded."

"You never said it, but I can see it in your eyes," Sam decided on, fighting a smirk. He listened too, catching a rather animated conversation in French. They loved the gossip, it seemed. He arched an eyebrow at the words he caught. "Alexandra thinks Rasputin is in the palace tonight. She's a little obsessed with the idea, it seems. That...who the fuck could be Rasputin?!"

She snorted. "In my eyes? Is this your way of inflating your ego, or a cheap come-on?" she asked, raising a brow. The question of Rasputin made her sigh. "I have no idea," she muttered, glancing about as they danced. It was becoming easier for her now. Though her movements were far from expert, they were competent enough to make them appear as if they were truly dancing for the enjoyment rather than a convenient way of looking busy. "Shit, I hope it isn't Luther."

"Both." At this, he grinned shamelessly. "No, it can't be Luther. He doesn't give off Rasputin vibes." The guy was way too fucking boring for that. "It's definitely one of us, because the palace? Tonight? Who else is here that you know of?" Sam thought back to the people in the barn that first night. The only males were Luther and that Oliver guy and that did not seem plausible. Besides, none of them had really encountered anyone, at least enough to give the people a reason to believe someone was dead!Rasputin risen to life once more.

She didn't respond verbally, but instead just stuck her tongue out at him. The sentiment got across.

As he mentioned Luther not giving off Rasputin vibes, she laughed. "You're right, he doesn't." Though Javert might. That guy was a creeper of epic proportions. "Nick," she said, shaking her head. "But he's a marshmallow dipped in chocolate. It's not him." She really didn't know anybody else that had come, and she had no way of knowing who else was even in Russia. "Maybe...us being here changed things...and he really is back..." If she could believe that she was capable of turning soda cans into a functional Taser, Joanie had to at least conceive the possibility that a hardass like Rasputin could come back from the dead.

"Don't stick that out at me unless you plan to use it, Josie." That response was also accompanied by a smirk.

But back to conversations of dead!Rasputin and his potential 'reincarnation' in someone from Bellum. "Nick? The one with the Tegan girl? Hmm, doubtful. But...what?" Sam cut himself off, biting his lower lip. "You think he's really back from the dead? He wasn't Jesus, he was just...a disgusting slob of a man who took a bath maybe twice in his lifetime." At this point, Sam believed that most anything was possible, sure, but for some reason this didn't match up to him. "Who knows," he groaned. "But I wouldn't be telling Lvov that. Then he'd never send anyone back." The last thing they all needed was for people to really believe the Rasputin reincarnation story. Besides, it was kind of like ratting out someone in the building - and that was kind of stupid, especially if they all had the same goal of getting back alive.

The comment made her gasp, briefly scandalized before recovering as she jabbed him lightly in the side. "You wish," she hissed.

As Sam questioned the possibility of Rasputin coming back, Joanie shrugged. Was it likely? No. But it wasn't impossible, and she had found that Bellum was great at taking the possible yet unlikely and making it reality. "I doubt Jesus bathed much," she said with a smirk, though really she was just attempting to inject some humor into the "we're fucked" scenario. "Oh yeah, I wouldn't do that." She frowned. "No, it's all bullshit. I'll just tell Lvov that people are idiots, Alexei is sick, and the Grand Duke is probably going to screw every woman here before he does anything remotely political."

Sam laughed at Joanie's fake scandalized self. "I do, actually," he confirmed, pressing close to her as they danced. "Sounds like a plan," he nodded, about what to tell the Lvov creature. "It should be enough, right? And you didn't betray him, so he can't do much. How exactly does this work now, if we fucked with history?" he asked, thinking out loud. "Like when we get back, all the textbooks are changed? I can't even fathom that."

She needed to stop saying things that would clearly make her lose. Deciding to keep her mouth shut this time, Joanie stumbled onto the complete mindfuck that was Sam's question. She actually faltered for a moment, leaning against him and picking up her foot quickly to avoid causing a scene. "Shit," she hissed, managing to recover quickly. "Sorry," she muttered. "And the question is, is this even real? Before you got here, we..." She looked around, realizing that this was going to screw with some heads if she wasn't careful. So she leaned in closer, lips nearly at his ear. "We were sent in the middle of the night to various rooms, groups of four, and we had to solve a riddle to get out." She pulled back, knowing how crazy this sounded. "So was that real? When we got back, they vanished, like nothing happened. So is this even history?" She shrugged. "I have no idea, Colonel."

Oops! Sam didn't expect Joanie to stumble, but he wasn't complaining. He kept his around around her, firmly, and just kept going on with the dancing like nothing had happened. "That definitely doesn't sound real. I mean, it's essentially like the building creates alternate universes for the purpose of mind fucking, then things go back to 'normal,'" he mused. Well. As normal as normal could be, if you lived there. "So maybe this isn't history, but some parts of it were pretty historically significant for me personally." She could draw her own conclusions there.

In a small way, Joanie was grateful that Sam didn't point out her hilarious failure. Not that she wasn't still self-conscious about it, but it was nice that he didn't leap at the chance to ridicule her. As he mentioned the possibility of the building just creating pockets of mind fuckery, she nodded. "That's probably what it is," she muttered. "It's some sadistic fucking puppeteer, creating a little magic universe for the sole purpose of making us all hate our lives." That was almost good enough to be written on a mascara-stained piece of paper.

As he mentioned the personal historical significance of this whole mess, she laughed. "Well I think turning into..." She paused, realizing that she actually didn't want to call him out in front of the ballroom and get him killed by angry peasants. "...your special little friend would be pretty significant."

"Wow, Josie. A sadistic fucking puppeteer? That's not dark and morbid at all," Sam replied with cheerful sarcasm. "And my little friend is a giant pain in the ass." Though Shere Khan was being quiet for once. He was still there, just not choosing to make a nuisance of himself. "And popping my spinal cord in ways that are just so wrong definitely wasn't my favorite part of our....vacation."

"Yes, Sam. A sadistic fucking puppeteer," she replied, deadpan. "He is only happy when the puppets are crying afterwards."

As he mentioned Shere Khan being a pain in the ass, she snorted. He was likely thrilled about that. The Wicked Witch had thrown a tantrum when Joanie called her annoying, but hey. It wasn't Joanie's fault that she was. "Oh, but you have to feel the burn if you want to make any improvement," she said with a smirk. "And if you call this a vacation, you are hereby ruining that word for all eternity. I will forever weep when I hear it." She paused, thinking on this. "Though I almost wish we had pictures from this. We could make a Bellum scrapbook about all the fucked-up things we do, and reminisce about all the horrible things that have happened."
