Russia, Day 4
Who: Group Xi
What: Dinner for the Grand Duke
Where: Alexander Palace
When: Day 4 (OOC, this will probably be open through the weekend)
Warnings: Could be anything. It's a party post.
Notes: Put your character's location in the subject line!

Dinner is an opulent affair.

The formal dining room has place settings for all scheduled attendees. Darcy and Helena are seated at either side of the Grand Duke, who keeps taking liberties with his hands that everyone at the table can see (including Vlad). The dinner is informal, and parties can dine at their leisure while enjoying the other activities of the evening.

The ballroom is chandelier lit for the evening, and an orchestra plays formal dance music, though the collection of nationalities present means that anyone can dance without standing out (as long as they're appropriately attired). There are curtained alcoves off the ballroom that afford some privacy for those so inclined. Lvov will stop his spies periodically, reminding them of the price of betraying him, while Pavel will be watching Joanie from a distance throughout the evening.

[Guests: Helena, Darcy, Vlad, Luther, Joanie, Nicky, Ella, Tegan]

Palace employees are all working the evening of the dinner/dance, and they have access to clothing in the guests' rooms (should they want to crash the festivities), and to the entire palace (should they want to work).

[Palace employees: Oliver, Will, Sam, Rosalie, Jane!Vaughn]

Outside the palace, the mob has seen Vlad, and they remain convinced he's Rasputin and that Jane!Vaughn and Ella are his witches. Even Alexandra seems to feel the same way, as she keeps drawing him aside and whispering to him. The mob is also still in pursuit of a Beast and a Tiger. Therefore, our village-hangers-on have been forced to hide in and within the palace, to keep from getting pitchforked. This group better sneak a bath and some clothing if they want to enter the palace proper.

[Hiding in the Palace: Daniel, Sebastian, Lily, Bernadette ]

[This is a party style thread. Put your character's location within the palace in your subject line. Have dinner, mingle, dance, sneak into one of those alcoves, go take a bath in a huge claw-foot tub, steal clothes, eat the Grand Duke for hitting on your woman, have fun!]

She snorted. "In my eyes? Is this your way of inflating your ego, or a cheap come-on?" she asked, raising a brow. The question of Rasputin made her sigh. "I have no idea," she muttered, glancing about as they danced. It was becoming easier for her now. Though her movements were far from expert, they were competent enough to make them appear as if they were truly dancing for the enjoyment rather than a convenient way of looking busy. "Shit, I hope it isn't Luther."

"Both." At this, he grinned shamelessly. "No, it can't be Luther. He doesn't give off Rasputin vibes." The guy was way too fucking boring for that. "It's definitely one of us, because the palace? Tonight? Who else is here that you know of?" Sam thought back to the people in the barn that first night. The only males were Luther and that Oliver guy and that did not seem plausible. Besides, none of them had really encountered anyone, at least enough to give the people a reason to believe someone was dead!Rasputin risen to life once more.

She didn't respond verbally, but instead just stuck her tongue out at him. The sentiment got across.

As he mentioned Luther not giving off Rasputin vibes, she laughed. "You're right, he doesn't." Though Javert might. That guy was a creeper of epic proportions. "Nick," she said, shaking her head. "But he's a marshmallow dipped in chocolate. It's not him." She really didn't know anybody else that had come, and she had no way of knowing who else was even in Russia. "Maybe...us being here changed things...and he really is back..." If she could believe that she was capable of turning soda cans into a functional Taser, Joanie had to at least conceive the possibility that a hardass like Rasputin could come back from the dead.

"Don't stick that out at me unless you plan to use it, Josie." That response was also accompanied by a smirk.

But back to conversations of dead!Rasputin and his potential 'reincarnation' in someone from Bellum. "Nick? The one with the Tegan girl? Hmm, doubtful. But...what?" Sam cut himself off, biting his lower lip. "You think he's really back from the dead? He wasn't Jesus, he was just...a disgusting slob of a man who took a bath maybe twice in his lifetime." At this point, Sam believed that most anything was possible, sure, but for some reason this didn't match up to him. "Who knows," he groaned. "But I wouldn't be telling Lvov that. Then he'd never send anyone back." The last thing they all needed was for people to really believe the Rasputin reincarnation story. Besides, it was kind of like ratting out someone in the building - and that was kind of stupid, especially if they all had the same goal of getting back alive.

The comment made her gasp, briefly scandalized before recovering as she jabbed him lightly in the side. "You wish," she hissed.

As Sam questioned the possibility of Rasputin coming back, Joanie shrugged. Was it likely? No. But it wasn't impossible, and she had found that Bellum was great at taking the possible yet unlikely and making it reality. "I doubt Jesus bathed much," she said with a smirk, though really she was just attempting to inject some humor into the "we're fucked" scenario. "Oh yeah, I wouldn't do that." She frowned. "No, it's all bullshit. I'll just tell Lvov that people are idiots, Alexei is sick, and the Grand Duke is probably going to screw every woman here before he does anything remotely political."

Sam laughed at Joanie's fake scandalized self. "I do, actually," he confirmed, pressing close to her as they danced. "Sounds like a plan," he nodded, about what to tell the Lvov creature. "It should be enough, right? And you didn't betray him, so he can't do much. How exactly does this work now, if we fucked with history?" he asked, thinking out loud. "Like when we get back, all the textbooks are changed? I can't even fathom that."

She needed to stop saying things that would clearly make her lose. Deciding to keep her mouth shut this time, Joanie stumbled onto the complete mindfuck that was Sam's question. She actually faltered for a moment, leaning against him and picking up her foot quickly to avoid causing a scene. "Shit," she hissed, managing to recover quickly. "Sorry," she muttered. "And the question is, is this even real? Before you got here, we..." She looked around, realizing that this was going to screw with some heads if she wasn't careful. So she leaned in closer, lips nearly at his ear. "We were sent in the middle of the night to various rooms, groups of four, and we had to solve a riddle to get out." She pulled back, knowing how crazy this sounded. "So was that real? When we got back, they vanished, like nothing happened. So is this even history?" She shrugged. "I have no idea, Colonel."

Oops! Sam didn't expect Joanie to stumble, but he wasn't complaining. He kept his around around her, firmly, and just kept going on with the dancing like nothing had happened. "That definitely doesn't sound real. I mean, it's essentially like the building creates alternate universes for the purpose of mind fucking, then things go back to 'normal,'" he mused. Well. As normal as normal could be, if you lived there. "So maybe this isn't history, but some parts of it were pretty historically significant for me personally." She could draw her own conclusions there.

In a small way, Joanie was grateful that Sam didn't point out her hilarious failure. Not that she wasn't still self-conscious about it, but it was nice that he didn't leap at the chance to ridicule her. As he mentioned the possibility of the building just creating pockets of mind fuckery, she nodded. "That's probably what it is," she muttered. "It's some sadistic fucking puppeteer, creating a little magic universe for the sole purpose of making us all hate our lives." That was almost good enough to be written on a mascara-stained piece of paper.

As he mentioned the personal historical significance of this whole mess, she laughed. "Well I think turning into..." She paused, realizing that she actually didn't want to call him out in front of the ballroom and get him killed by angry peasants. "...your special little friend would be pretty significant."

"Wow, Josie. A sadistic fucking puppeteer? That's not dark and morbid at all," Sam replied with cheerful sarcasm. "And my little friend is a giant pain in the ass." Though Shere Khan was being quiet for once. He was still there, just not choosing to make a nuisance of himself. "And popping my spinal cord in ways that are just so wrong definitely wasn't my favorite part of our....vacation."

"Yes, Sam. A sadistic fucking puppeteer," she replied, deadpan. "He is only happy when the puppets are crying afterwards."

As he mentioned Shere Khan being a pain in the ass, she snorted. He was likely thrilled about that. The Wicked Witch had thrown a tantrum when Joanie called her annoying, but hey. It wasn't Joanie's fault that she was. "Oh, but you have to feel the burn if you want to make any improvement," she said with a smirk. "And if you call this a vacation, you are hereby ruining that word for all eternity. I will forever weep when I hear it." She paused, thinking on this. "Though I almost wish we had pictures from this. We could make a Bellum scrapbook about all the fucked-up things we do, and reminisce about all the horrible things that have happened."

"Now there's an idea. Unfortunately, I did not bring my camera with me as I had no idea we'd be time traveling," Sam said. "I suppose the fond memories will have to suffice." He oh-so-gracefully dipped Joanie back over his arm a bit, then pulled her up so they were nose to nose. "Okay, it's not a vacation. More like an exercise on Team Building...in Hell."

Re: Back to Ballroom

It was still surreal to think that they had actually gone time traveling. Somehow, Joanie had been convincing herself that this was just some kind of elaborate set-up. Like in the middle of the night, interior decorators had crept into Bellum and turned the place into a perfect model of 1917 Russia, complete with actors and fake weather. It was ridiculous, but it managed to keep her brain from shattering at the idea that they were somewhere else, at another time, and were totally alone.

The dip caught her by surprise, but she followed his lead, straightening up and feeling her cheeks burn as his nose brushed hers. "This is not Hell," she replied stubbornly. "It's too damn cold. If I'm in Hell, I want to be nice and warm."

Sam probably wouldn't say it right now, because he didn't want to embarrass Joanie, but he found her blushing sort of cute. Because she really wasn't the blushing 'type' at first glance (and even after the first few conversations) so to see that side of her was always interesting. "I'll warm you up," he offered, lecherous eyebrow waggle and all. The corner of his mouth turned up in a smirk. "Lvov won't notice if you sneak away for a little bit."

The offer made her scoff. "Or I could just make some blankets," she replied, raising a brow in victory. "You can have one if you're good."

As he suggested leaving, she paused. "I, uh..." Her gaze darted around the room briefly, paranoid. She didn't see Lvov anywhere, and his beard wasn't exactly discreet. After a few moments, she looked up at him. "Okay, you horrible influence." Their dance slowly stopped to a standstill, and she folded her arms across her chest. "I'll play hookey for a while. Only because I've actually done some work." Which she had, really. She knew that Alexei was sick and that Rasputin was dead as a doornail. So that was the answer to two questions, right there! He had to appreciate that.

"Why tire yourself out like that? The way I am suggesting is much more fun." Sam smiled charmingly, oh yes, la de da, they totally weren't sneaking off! and tucked Joanie's hand in the crook of his arm as they headed to the edge of the dance floor. "Where would you like to go?" he asked.

She raised a brow. "Then when you turn into a popsicle, I become one too." She gripped his arm as they moved through the dancing couples. Despite her false confidence in this plan, she glanced nervously over her shoulder the entire time they walked. After all, Lvov and his horrible beard could be lurking.

"Uh," she stammered, trying to get her thoughts together as they approached the edge of the dance floor. "I don't really know. I'm not exactly acquainted with the palace," she said dryly. "I don't have a favorite room we can retreat to."

"Mmm...maybe relax a little? Your eyes are starting to bug out like a lemur," Sam chided Joanie, only joking of course. "We can just explore." And keep an eye out for midget-hiding bearded Princes destined for jailtime and failure. "How's...your special friend holding up?" he asked, referring to the nameless witch who hated being called ma'am.

The comment made her scowl. "They are not!" she hissed, knowing full well that it was a lame retaliation. She didn't care. They were not bugging out, she did not have buggy eyes. "Fine by me," she replied huffily as he suggested they explore. No, she was not sulking. Honestly.

As he asked about the Witch, she shrugged. "Quiet. Thankfully."

"You should be taking advantage of what I have to teach you, child." The Witch's voice was irate, bored. "Not prancing about with this ridiculous boy."

"Also she thinks you're ridiculous." She paused, then put on a bright smile. "Hey, we agreed on something!"

Sam huffed a quiet laugh at Joanie's obvious sulking. How precious! He found her hand and laced their fingers together for the journey. "Oh snap! Okay, so why does she think I'm ridiculous? And why do you agree with that?"

Do you want to know what I think of her? Shere Khan purred, and Sam could almost see his tail twitching in that annoying way.

No. Not really. Being back at Bellum sounded more and more appealing - at least then the tiger would be gone for a good portion of the month. Or so he hoped.

This "holding hands" thing was quite foreign to Joanie, looking somewhat startled at the gesture. "Uh," she started, trying to think of how exactly to phrase how ridiculous Sam was. "Well." She paused.

"He's exaggerated."

"She says you're exaggerated," she repeated. "And I say that you're impulsive." As if Joanie's ridiculous temper didn't make her impulsive. But this wasn't about her, after all, this was about Sam. "Also silly." That last one, however, wasn't said as an insult. She grinned, tilting her head to the side. "Like a monkey."

Had no one ever tried to hold Joanie's hand before? At first Sam thought he accidentally electrocuted her judging by the look on her face. "Impulsive? How am I impulsive?" he wanted to know. He was a very practical person! Of course, by that it was practicality in the way of recognizing the benefits to amputating his own arm if it got stuck in a furnace and he would die of infection if it didn't come off or some such - he was good at doing what needed to be done and wouldn't question it.

"A monkey?" he gasped, feigning shock.

Well, she's right about tha -

Zip it. He silenced the tiger.

"Well, I think that you're...endlessly irritating," Sam decided on. "And a bit ridiculous too."

At the question, she snorted. "Hmmm, let me see. Asking me out? That had to be impulsive, because if you'd given it any thought, you'd have known that it was a bad idea." Calling him an idiot and simultaneously self-deprecating. That was Joanie's favorite kind of comment.

She grinned as he gasped at the monkey comment. "Yes, a monkey," she affirmed with a nod. "I want to make you a little hat and vest."

As he turned the tables on her, she looked at him with a scowl. "Irritating?" she asked, glaring daggers at him. "How am I irritating? And besides, if I'm so irritating, why do you even talk to me? Hmmm?"

"Child, I have cautioned you about this temper before, but this is-"

"And why exactly was that a bad idea?" Sam asked, his tone indicating that sarcasm was present and he was merely humoring Joanie. "I still happen to think it was a good idea," he said, filing out of the ballroom oh for the love of GOD air! He tugged the collar of his shirt with his free hand, exhaling in annoyance. "You're irritating because you always have to have the last word and you're so...nyuugh."

That made absolutely no sense.

I didn't ask for your input! Sam hissed mentally.

Suddenly, this wasn't a joke anymore. Joanie was bristling, jaw tight as she rounded to face him. "I'm so what?" she hissed, tightening her free hand into the material of her dress. What the hell was he saying? That she was absolutely insufferable, and thus horrible? Fuck him. Fuck all of this. She should have known better than to actually attempt a "dating" thing. Clearly, she had lost her head. Damn his good looks and charm.
