Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:eponine, gingerbread man, plot: riddles, robin hood, wendy

Group J: Robin, Wendy, Eponine, Gingerbread Man

The plaque on the wall says:

Sit down for tea with friends at last,
And have a chat about days gone past.
Memories, old and new, are your currency in this room;
Tell us your first and tell us your best,
And tell us true, or the tea will be done quite soon--
It is rude to get up before you're through.

This room is absurdly pleasant, were it not for the lack of doors. The windows show a bright spring morning outside, but they do not open, and there is nothing to see but impossibly green grass in any direction. The wallpaper has yellow posies on it, the armchairs are covered in lace doilies and smell like grandmothers, while the tables are cluttered with china dogs and similar knick knacks. There is tea and cucumber sandwiches on the sitting room table.

The more time passes, the tea level goes down, and the sandwiches disappear.

Presumably, if they wait so long that the food disappears, they're stuck in there.

Nina had been walking back from work. The scene with Joss had quickly been forgotten for more dramatic things and she had made a lot of tips from the college students happy to be done for the semester. Except now, she realized immediately, she was not on a dark street, but rather in a bright, old fashioned room with food and tea.

She tensed warily, looking completely out of place in her dark skirt, jacket, and shirt against the warm colors of the room as she assessed the other three. The girl was blushing and Nina fairly quickly discounted her as a threat. The men though-- she wasn't sure, and she double checked her knife and gun. Both were there and she allowed herself to shift down her level of alarm.

"There are no doors," she commented tonelessly. It was the first thing she had noticed. There were windows, though, if it came to it, although she didn't recognize the outside setting beyond them.

Robert had been having happier days thanks to his new company, a furry little thing called Balto. Having put the pup to sleep with the aid of some soft piano music, he was about to call it a night himself. However, sleep would not come to him as he found himself suddenly in an eerily pleasant room with three other people. Quite wary of them all, he nodded at the one woman's note about the lack of doors.

Maneuvering over to the guy looking at something on the wall, Robert read the plaque aloud, not noticing he was doing so. Then he tried the window, which refused to budge. "I think we have to sit," he offered, moving to one of the chairs and plopping himself down, not actively demanding anyone else to do the same.

"We're not going to be able to get up once we sit down," Christian muttered to himself. If this place had the capability to transport him to a different time zone, then he figured it made sense to treat its veiled threats seriously. He took a moment to examine the man and the girl who had already sat down, and the woman who stood tensely to the side. From the looks of it, the woman was most likely going to be the one to placate. But Christian had made a career out of convincing people to do what they might normally not, and this was just another challenge to face.

Christian finally shrugged and sank into one of the empty chairs, dropping the book still clutched in his hand onto the table in the process. "I guess we sit and see if it lets us out if we do what it says." At least he didn't worry about sounding crazy to this group; the building was plenty insane enough for all of them. "I'm Christian, by the way."

Tegan wasn't comfortable with any of the people in the room, peering around at the three of them. She straightened up in her chair, tugging her sleep shorts down as far as she could, a little embarrassed at how short they were. "I'm Tegan."

She'd listened when one of the men read the plaque outloud, and swallowed hard at the thought of sharing her memories. It didn't seem like a difficult thing to do, but she wasn't looking forward to pulling up thoughts that were surprisingly painful for good memories.

"Nina." She introduced herself but didn't sit, pacing along the length of the room instead and examining it. Both the set-up and the decor were completely foreign to her. Nina didn't grow up with grandmothers and wallpaper and odd trinkets and wires or explosives set to go off, she sat down and took a sandwich. It was looked over critically as well and sniffed almost imperceptibly before she took a bite. Nina didn't say anything though-- she wasn't going to share any memories and they didn't want to hear them either.

He felt a need to share his name as well, given that everyone else had done the same so logically, it was only proper that he reveal his name. "I'm Robert," he introduced himself. Shifting in his chair, Robert decided to follow the rules. It's one of the many things his grandfather taught him, even if most of the time the rules themselves didn't makes sense.

"The tea is moving," he commented allowed before settling back in his chair. "If we tell memories, then we get out, right? I have to feed a dog so I'd like to leave soon. So...um...when I was ten my grandpa gave me my first guitar to play music on." It wasn't the best of memories, but it wasn't the worst of them either, so he was willing to take what he could get if it meant getting out of there.

Christian resisted the urge to cross his arms across his bare chest. As displeased as he was about having to share something from his personal life, he couldn't slip up now and let it show. 'Christian Spade' had nothing to hide, even if Christian Spade did.

Robert's proclamation made him examine the tea. "You're right, it's decreasing." Resisting the urge to grit his teeth, Christian put on an appropriately nostalgic look. "I went to Coney Island when I was six. It was the first time I had been to an amusement park with real rides." He grinned sheepishly. "My gramps won me a giant stuffed dinosaur at the ringtoss." There. It was true, and had absolutely no relation to the person he was today.

"Two down, two to go."

Tegan bit her lip, not wanting to share her memories with these strangers. She was a little confused by the whole thing, and glanced over toward the plaque on the wall, unable to read it from where she sat. "Do we just have to do the one? ...just our best one? Or our first one too?"

She took a breath to steady herself, and tried not to think too much. When she finally started talking again, her voice was soft. "My little brother's third birthday. It wasn't that long ago, and all of us went to the park. It was..." her voice trembled a little. "...good."

Nina's expression was closed as she shook her head sharply. "No." She stood up and walked over to the windows again to see if they opened for her. They didn't.

Robert didn't react visibly to Nina's refusal, peering down at the sandwiches. "Another's gone," he murmured, looking at the others to see if they would notice the magically disappearing food.

Christian shared Robert's lack of reaction. This wasn't the first time he had dealt with stubborn people. "The riddle makes it seem like the food disappearing will be a bad thing." Just as he was speaking, another sandwich vanished into thin air. "I don't see another way out," he shrugged, in the hopes that the woman would just share something trivial so they could all get back to pretending nothing was wrong with the place.

Tegan was a little shaky as she looked around the room. She'd actually shared something that she hadn't even wanted to think about, and this woman was just refusing? The disappearing food seemed to be a countdown, and she didn't want to find out what happened when everything reached 'zero'. Beyond that, she had no idea where they actually were, or what might be happening to her brothers. She wanted out.

She wasn't one to speak up, but this wasn't an ordinary circumstance. "Please, just say something so that we can leave." Her voice was soft, but serious.

If the food could disappear, Nina wasn't at all sure that they wouldn't be brought along with it when it was gone. Reluctantly, she sat back down, not speaking, but looking at them all evenly. They must think that their lives had been so terrible thus far. Tegan's plea got through to her a little though and her fists clenched slightly.

For a few minutes, she continued saying nothing. At first, it was easier, but then as more of the food started to disappear more rapidly, she leaned forward, thinking. Searching, really, trying to find a memory that she could avoid the mention of any criminal behavior. "Eleven," she finally decided, staring up at them. "My guardian took me to St. Louis for his...work and we ended up going to the arch." It was true, but she had glossed over a lot. If it didn't count, then everyone else was going to have to be stuck here and really, Nina knew, there were worse places to stay or even to die in.

Just as Nina finished sharing her memory, the slow outline of a door began to trace itself on one of the walls, as if drawn by an invisible hand. Christian simply stared, unwilling to blink in case he was just imagining it.

Fortunately, the door was actually there.

"Well, that was straightforward enough." After pushing himself away from the table, Christian grabbed his book and stepped towards the door. God he hoped it didn't just lead into another room with more instructions. Grasping the door handle, he took a deep breath and slowly pushed the door open. "Let's see what's behind door number 1."

Tegan pushed herself out of her seat and peered through the door when Christian opened it. The view through appeared to be the lobby of Bellum, and at this point, worried about her brothers, she was willing to take the chance. She threw one last glance over her shoulder at the other three before slipping through the door and hurrying off to #108.
